Has the main game changed much since release?

I bought this game and played it not too long after it first came out.  I've played a few FF games in the past and I thought it sounded like fun.  But I was seriously mistaken.  By my experience, the game was geared only to the most hardcore gamers, with massive grinding necessary to level.  That, and I noticed that the same mobs had like 10 different names and I found muself fighting the same rabbit well into level 20.

So, I know there have been some expansions, but have the problems I mentioned above actually changed or did they just add more content for those high level power-gamers?  I've thought about coming back to play a little, but I don't want to waste my time if it's the same as it was...

Well, chains of promathia is the only expansion you would have missed.. The game has changed, more items, armor, quests, you can even get a NPC person to fight with you, you can gear it up etc... But, if you think the grind around lv1-20 or so was bad don't play.. It's nothing, its actually very easy and can be accomplished quickly by the right people. The mobs still looks the same mostly, kill some crabs in boy-tree (lv55ish) kill some crabs outside sandoria (lv3-4?). The game is actually pretty fun if you get into it, one of the few games where leveling is fun, which is what it was designed to be. I guess if it's not fun to someone its considdered a grind fest, but why even play if you considder it that? theres not much to do once you hit 75 other then farm you 2nd tier set of armor, do HNM's and help guildies.

Well u can't do much for the job u've maxed but u can lvl another job. Most ppl alos use their 75 jobs to help lowbies in their linkshells. I know ppl who have been playing for 3 years who have like at least 2 75 jobs and r still playing.

To answer the OP's question. Yeah, a lot has changed since release. But I would say most of it has more to do with end-game activities. there is actually a ton of stuff to do once you get to levels 70-75.

Sky and sea are an absolute blast, as is dynamis. All the new gear is basically high-end gear. The economy is a little out of whack now, but it might come back to reality, you never know.

But like was said before, if the early grind was annoying to you, don't play again, it gets a thousand times worse later. For instance, exp needed to get to level 20 is like 4k. Exp needed to get to level 75 is 40k. So yes, it would take you ten times as long to level once, when you are that high.

They also lessenes the amount of XP required to level from around 60 - 75. In addition starting at around that level you can get more than 200xp from mobs on chains which helps. However, if you can't stand the forced grouping, you might try an 'easier' MMO. FFXI still remains one of the more involved games on the market when it comes to leveling. The pace, although helped at higher levels is still fairly slow. (Hint: Get a static if you want to alleviate the slow pacing a bit)

personally i have a few lvl 75 characters and a few other randomly lvl'd jobs but they all come in handy at one point or another pertaining to battle bcnm stratigy.  almost all the battles in CoP are lvl capped which its very handy to have paladins ninja blms and smns even a drk for fighting diablos.

however pertaining to this thread i believe that 1-20 are the hardest lvl's to do and in all reality i don't think you can expirience the fullness of the game unless you've gotten to 75 the stuff you can do is insain.  HNM hunts, Dynamis, Limbus (if you've put the considerible time in to even get to sea) overall i love the strats involved with high lvl events the amount of planning and exicution of 18 + people that needs to go in to win a battle perhaps against a god or otherwise.
