"Free-speech activists are up in arms after hearing the news that Microsoft, capitulating to Chinese officials, shut down the blog of a Chinese citizen critical of government policies. Microsoft runs a web portal with almost 5 million boggers tapping away. The site applies advanced filtration technology to censor certain words; offensive bloggers are fined."
"China has a burgeoning online population at 87 million users, a number that will skyrocket to a billion before long. Microsoft isn't going to impose Western standards of freedom of speech on a government that can provide access to that market."
Meanwhile the population is being completely destroyed by non-enforced polution standards... guess if you have a population of 4 Billion pesants what does it matter if half die from cancer and starvation over 20 years !! It is not like they can vote nor revolt (talk about gun control) to replace dictators that actually care about the well being of those pesants... op cid n korea.

Google agent of the comunist chineese gov't supreses free thought and speech by blocking access to search and news sites
link
" Google.cn said Tuesday it would launch versions of its search and news Web sites in China that censor material deemed objectionable to authorities there, reasoning that (100 million '$ users getting limited access to content was better than none.
And in September, Reporters Without Borders accused Yahoo of providing information that helped Chinese officials convict a journalist charged with leaking state secrets. Shi Tao was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Ironically, Google was praised by privacy advocates and consumers last week for fighting the U.S. government's request to hand over random Web search data on US pedofile perverts. Yahoo, MSN and AOL had complied with the request."

I hate to say, but Microsoft did the right thing. They abided by China's laws and regulations pertaining to corporate relations in that country. The rights and freedoms of a democratic government is not for every country in the world.
Most seem to forget that the Chinese "peasants" outnumber government officials no less than 1000:1. If they find life so bad, they can always revolt.
As China's economy grows, it will become increasingly capitalistic. While under a communist government, they'll never reach the level of America or Japan in terms of standard of living. The Chinese people will realize that while the potential is there, it's being squashed under heavy laws. Growing corporations aren't going to sit on their arses and have the same done to them. I doubt it's going to stay like that forever.
In any case, the movement towards capitalism will also move towards a freer internet, so we won't be seeing these kinds of problems in the future...hopefully

Who the hell are you to call Dekron an "ignorant American"? Dekron's posts are always well thought out, it seems that you are indeed the ignorant party here, since you didn't add any reasoning to your statement, I will classify you as a "Mindless & Jealous American Basher"... Back on topic... Most people do not realize that China is headed for big time trouble... Look at all of the legislation and human rights laws that went into effect here in the USA after industrialization occurred. China will be forced to do comparable things, and this will cripple the government's control, the countries output and the population as a whole will demand rights that a communist government cannot grant, it is antithetical for a communist government to implement fair trade practices and etc...
What happens once the population of China opens it's eyes and realizes that fair labor laws need to be in place? Over 1/4th of it's workplace is now gone (child labor), this would alone cripple China's production... What happens once fair labor laws require Chinese companies to pay equally and do away with sweatshops? Cost of good rise, and China is no longer the bargain basement price driven workshop anymore... What happens when the government will be held accountable for the healthcare and welfare of over 1 billion peasants? No government has ever been able to do this completely, hell, America has a hard enough time doing this with under 500 million people... People claim China's large population is an advantage, but as this country develops, it will be the thorn in China's spine...
All I hear anymore on the news is China this and China that... The country is still by and large a shithole, and is still receiving foreign aid... Once the social changes occur that are mandatory after a country industrializes itself, China will no longer have the purported "edge" it has, and will have to abide by the same trade and workplace laws most developed countries abide by too... China is where America was at over 100 years ago, only problem is, with the internet and globalization, China won't have the flexibility of using slave labor for too long, since the rest of the world already knows about it...
China people good dictator bad hunman rights good democracy good, what I love about other countries is how much they suck and how better we are, but then again most people in this country dont know what the heck they are talking about either, but wait I am sure they have travelled the world, done saw it seen it been in it, but yet at the same time so full og shit that its up to there eye balls.
I still like hookers.....
The chinese economy is currently racing upwards in a insane speed. With the growth of a capitalistic nation, values that current capitalistic nation have will follow. I give China around 40-50 years and we will start seing more and more "western" laws. Most likely it will turn into some semi "USA" nation. The process will be quite painfull I fear.
But one reason for this big economic growth right now is the fact that the goverment has a very strict control with everything. Dictatorship and strict goverment control is infact the most effective way of running a country, no doubt about it. Much, much more effective than the slow papermill of the democratic western nations. Want a road built in China? Just give the command. Want the same in a western country? Prepare for atleast a couple of years untill you start building. The problem with dictatorship/strict goverment control is that it always seems to attract the wrong people. Human history can't list many friendly dictators eh?
I don't really like these "Look at the stupid eastern nations, let's spit on their stupid laws" posts. You have to remember that most western nations where just like this just a "couple" of years ago. Hell we even see similar not so good cases today.

Once again Phoenix, it seems as though we are in complete agreement... Nice post... The modernization of China will be an extremely painful proces... Like we did in the USA, Europe and other developed countries, China will have to adopt more modern standards for the treatment of their workers... Remember, China is not a part of the G8, and won't be for quite some time...
I am at a loss to explain how China could possibly modernize 2 billion people... Maybe a dictatorship is the most efficient way to do this, but there is a heavy price to pay and the people's voices can only be held down for so long... With globalization, China can only suppress information for so long before the average Chinese citizen can see that they are deprived of some of the most basic rights...
Don't get me wrong, we are Americans are very far from being 100% free... For example, my wife couldn't bring back any Cuban cigars from her trip to Central America due to the embargo with Cuba, so here, my country is telling me that due to their petty squabble with the shithole nation that is Cuba, I cannot enjoy a hand rolled Cohiba cigar...

Thanks for that dis-order.
The only thing wrong with my statement is a typo. I was actually typing 100:1, however, to my opponent's credit, the numbers are actually (after I did the math) 93:7, however, if the US were to go to war with China, it would take everyone in our country to match the available military power of China. China's total available military power is 347,000,000 (rounded to a nice even number), which is more than the current population of the US (roughly 325 mil). The US's total available military power is roughly 800k - 1 mil at max.
Even at 93:7, Chinese citizens could easily overun the communist government if they chose to do so.

Jesus man... 347 million is a lot!!!! It is times like this that I am thankful for our vast array of nuclear weaponry... 347 million Chinese soldiers won't make a lick of difference when we shoot up on of our missles with 20 nuclear warheads loaded, all aimed at China... In all reality, China could probably take over all of Asia, and maybe even the entire planet with a military as large as that... WOW! Thanks for the numbers there Dekron, I will now never sleep for the rest of my life...

You honestly think, a bunch of low income families. In a country with some of the strictist gun control laws, could overtake the Chinese government? You make me sick, you really do. "Oh, if they had a problem with not having rights, they'd revolt?" How? Charge at the police with pick forks and get shot to death? Sure, that'll help. When a man protests in China, hes either ran over by a tank or shot.
I called him ignorant, because he assumes that the people of China have any say in the matter.
[12:38am] <+steve> don't speak of tampons in a channel like this
You are truly an ignorant person. I don't mean that as an insult, but as a person who has no knowledge of history. First, en masse they would be formible against an army, even if they are ill-equipped "peasants who carry pitchforks". Now, the governments could quickly shoot down the revolt and eliminate the opponents with one drop of a ballistic missle, but they would only damn themselves in doing so.
If you take 10,000 police officers armed with guns and 100,000 peasants with pitch forks, the massacre would be on the side of the police. Sure, I never said there would not be casulties, of course there would.
Further, let's just cover two points.
(1) Where do you think most of the weapons came from in the Revolutionary war? Do you think the American colonialists had a stockpile of guns? No, most of the enlisted were pitchfork-wielding farmers who possibly had one gun for hunting. Many weapons came from raiding/killing the English. They stood up against their oppressors and won (and they were outnumbered). All it takes is the desire, will and sacrifice to overcome.
(2) Why do you think the Chinese government supresses this information from their citizens. It is to keep them at bay because they know that they are outnumbered.
You said that "When a man protests in China, hes either ran over by a tank or shot." Well, all it takes is for one person to start an insurgency and the gather of masses to overcome the oppressor.
This must be remembered: There is no TRUE social modernization. Most social modernization that we have in America was in cultures hundreds, if not thousands of years ago. Maybe not as clustered, but it's not a revolutionary idea.
China won't have to have human rights. It won't have to have the same industrial laws we have here. It does not have to follow the "path of the American."
I'm american, so don't bash me for being anti-american. But I'm going to state a fact. If they followed the path of the American, they'd become fat, lazy, and rely on their government for everything. For the past 100 years, we haven't been going forward, we've been going backwards. We've become as the roman mobs dependent on the government for food and entertainment to keep us happy and at bay.
In some situations, they're more free capitalistically than us.
Point being, they're not American, and they don't have to be. Just because they're becoming Capitalistic, hardly means they must be "modernized". If anything, modernization destroyed the booming of the American economy.

Even as multibillion companies take part in China's censorship of the Internet, a small group of dissidents and volunteers are doing what they can to protect Chinese surfers and open up the Internet in China, Business Week reports this week. Headed by Chinese expat Bill Xia, Dynamic Internet Technologies is distributing software that Chinese citizen can use to cloak the websites they visit and avoid censors' blocks.

The new moral lardstick of china:
-- Love the country; do it no harm.
-- Serve the people; do no disservice.
-- Follow science; discard ignorance.
-- Be diligent; not indolent.
-- Be united, help each other; make no gains at other's expense.
-- Be honest and trustworthy; do not spend ethics for profits.
-- Be disciplined and law-abiding; not chaotic and lawless.

link2 guess this was why Rolling Stone mag was baned after it's first issue, they deliberatly undervalue their money 40% to landslide skew (+200B $ trade sold to US) their international economics, and are blocking porn and violence in their public media... according to them the man vs tank 1989 Tienanmen Square incident NEVER happened and Mao never caused the murder of +120MILLION chineese pesants.
Tough to fight back with bamboo poles and rocks against AK, tanks and "reeducation" camps.
this is where the US government needs to step in. if microsoft does not impose the same standards in human rights in the united states, then microsoft cant do business there. its that simple. these corporations should and need to be a respresentative to the united states and its constitution.
Have played: CoH, DDO EQ2, FFXI, L2, HZ, SoR, and WW2 online
So for the chinese companies to revolt would be like them revolting against themselves. There's no money being funneled back into the hands of the people to give them power, it's just being circulated back to the government so it can grow in influence.
Throughout history the Chinese have most of the time been the dominant country in the world. By them closing themselves off during the industrial revolution they made a mistake and changed that. But that mistake is starting to prove to be only a temporary one. Their economy is set to pass the U.S. econcomy soon. And then they will be on track to regain their historical default power status, unless something changes.

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, depend on a corporation to consider human rights an issue. You'll be disappointed EVERY single time. Their only reason for existence is income. Or else they would never have been established.

china adds 15 yr sentence for essay on democratic voting, sees it as "subversion" !!
These is the same dictator country that backs the nut case dictator in north korea, (not to mention ALOT of 'voting age' kids in South Korea actually support US getting out of SK and them 'normalizing' relations with nk) china is also the same country along with Pakestan that openly sells WMD to known terrorist organizations. Notice how china and russia support iran getting nuclear weapons programs, even france sells breeder reactors to them so they do not have to endure the gas centrifuge process to enrich Uranium to weapon's grade quality.
Look for chineese armies to make a serious appearance in middle east and especially supporting moslems against Israel. (for the sake of favorable crude oil prices. Prices that have increased from $20 a barrel in 2002 to nearly $80 four years later, how soon to +$100 !)
AND china still has "most favored nation" trading status. Mexico is not the only other country full of criminals from the top down.
