I've noticed with most successful MMORPGs they all have PvP,but in the roots of RPG games the people in town weren't there just to give out quests or sell items. The NPCs in classic RPGs would walk around and you could talk to them giving the world more depth. Now with MMORPGs the only time you go into a town is to buy an item or start a quest. The NPCs are just mindless idiots who even if they walk around they're just there to give useless info or give out a quest.
Why can't they make the NPCs do something for once in an MMORPG? Like say...build buildings, hammer on an anvil creating armor/weapons,out getting food,or talking to each other. That in my opinion would give MMORPG worlds at least a little more depth.
One example in an MMORPG where the NPCs did something other than sell items or give out quests/info was in Ascalon during the Wintersday event. Two guards were having a snowball fight,it to me made the world a little more interesting/in-depth.

I'm sure it has to do with process load on the server-side program. Plus, would you mind waiting 8 game hours so that your armor merchant wakes up for that new bracer you wanted?
read up on Seed though, they have a little more depth than normal, but nothing to the extreme you want... http://www.seedthegame.com/news.php

Check out Morrowind when it comes out. Not an MMORPG. But you'll probably like what you see, especially with their "Radiant AI".
Shame they couldn't follow stead with such innovative idea's in the MMORPG department.

Having any AI in a mmorpg would put stress on the servers witht he currwent tech, maybe with the PS3 and CELL powered servers because Sony seems to think it does everything.
Anyways PVP is vital for online games otherwise u might aswel be playign single player

Why can't you have both? I'm sure the technology is there to do it, there are mmogs with roaming people or guards and scripted events. Most PvP in current mmogs is catered for ADD "boom headshot!" kid and has little to no long term consequence. Bring back PvP that instills real comradiere I say.
comradiere,huh?
Anyway, yea I still don't understand why they can't have both other than the whole stress thing. I meant as in say,1 or 2 people building something or setting up a camp outside of town.

I think the game that is going to handle this the best is Heroes Journey. They are a MuD company, and MuD's were RPG before Everquest was even a glimmer in anyones eye. They have either hired, or have an entire volunteer staff of people to play the GM/DM role in every area. The GM's are given the abiltiy to design content on the fly, they are encouraged not just to assist with trouble tickets, but to actively interact with the players in the game, and they can assume the form of various NPC's iin order to do so. This means that you could go to turn in a quest at some random NPC, only to have him suddenly "come alive" and begin chit-chatting with you, or send you on some special mission. That is MMO gaming done right in my opinion.
