Looking for a PVP-based MMORPG

Can anyone recommend a game that has sophisticated crafting and political systems, is not-instanced, but most importantly it should have complex combat, PVP and PKing (PKing like in Lineage 2 >:)?

None exists, except MMOFPS games WWIIONLINE and PLANETSIDE.

Shadowbane looked promising but barely anyone plays it.  Besides, Whats the point of PvE when all you do is have somebody twink you up to the highest level.  IT makes absolutely no sense to me.

    Wow?
    Guild Wars
    Lineage 2
Runescape ( I know its crap!)
They are the only best PvP games I know... Sorry dude!

EVE Online, hands down.  The PvP there is intense and ranges anywhere from 1-vs.-1 to massive fleet combat with hundreds of players on either side.  There are hundreds of ships and thousands of different modules to choose from, so you never truly know what your opponent has fitted...and he never truly knows what you have fitted either.

In addition, tactics and strategy matter in EVE, from prior planning and proper ship fitting to acquiring intel on your opponent, to bringing your opponent to action in the first place, and doing it in a manner where the situation favors you and not him.  Once you're engaged, proper use of your tank, setting engagement range to favor your weapon class and maintaining it, and preventing your opponent from getting away are also important, as are electronic warfare modules, energy vampires that suck your opponent's capacitor dry, etc.

If you'd like a more detailed example of combat, I posted one in reasponse to the "5 Ways to Enjoy EVE" thread in the EVE section of this site's forums. image

Hmm, it wouldn't let me edit my prior post at all, so here's what I was going to add:

One other thing that sets EVE PvP above the rest is that there is real loss if you lose.  If you ship gets blown up, it's gone, period.

If you had the foresight to insure it (and if it's not tech 2, because tech 2 ships never insure for anywhere near their market value), you will receive an insurance payout roughly equivalent to the market value of the ship itself.  You will then have to shell out a hefty percentage of the ship actual cost to re-insure your replacement (also, insurance only lasts for three months from the day you set it).

One thing that insurance does not cover, however, is modules.  Anything you had fitted to your ship is either destroyed or looted by the victor.  Also, be aware that a good set of PvP-level modules can cost as much as the ship itself in some instances.

But wait, there's more - now that you've lost your ship, you're in an escape pod known as a capsule, and sitting there amidst the wreckage.  If you don't act quickly and warp out, the person who shot up your ride can kill your escape pod as well, resulting in character death.  In addition to losing any implants your character has, pod-killing can result in the loss of skillpoints as well if you haven't kept your clone up to date.  (Clone costs vary according to how many skillpoints that level of clone will retain - as long as your clone can handle as many skillpoints as you currently have or more, you will only need to buy a new clone and won't have to make up lost training time.  Also, the higher level clones can be very expensive, costing in the tens of millions as far as ISK goes.)

So, anyway, losses can be major setbacks in EVE, which gives EVE's PvP meaning.

One thing I always tell people new to PvP, however, is this: never fly anything you can't afford to lose.

If you don't fly it, do you have a reason to buy it?

Does it still serve a purpose?

    The future: Adellion
Common flaw in MMORPGs: The ability to die casually
Advantages of Adellion: Dynamic world (affected by its inhabitants)
Player-driven world (beasts won't be an endless supply of mighty swords, gold will come from mines, not dragonly dens)
Player-driven world (Leadership is the privilege of a player, not an npc)

Sorry, I wasn't clear: never fly a ship into PvP or a dangerous situation that you can't afford to lose.  If you're using it to kill NPCs or run missions, it's usually fine since you can often predict how tough your opponent will be and what you can handle.  PvP, on the other hand, can involve some very nasty surprises.

UO is non-instanced? Sounds to me like he's looking for EVE Online, honestly.

DAOC has a PVP server that would mesh with that. Kinda brutal though. The other servers are factional PVP only.
WoW has dedicated PVP servers as well as voluntary PVP on it's regular servers.
EQ2 is rolling it's own dedicated PVP servers soon. Someone who plays and keeps up with it more can probably give you more details.
Ryzom has PVP but it's a bit odd the way that works.
    AO has factional PVP

UO, EVE, AC - Darktide Server, IRTH and several of the upcoming MMO's sound like they'd fit what you're looking for the most, however.

    Good luck.

Acctually Trammel has some healthy pvp aswell atleast on europa :)

We have pesudo Factions figthing in brit in all Gm crafted items.

And we have RPpvp wich is very alive and kickin in trammel :)

sometimes i think theres more pvp in tram then in fel..

And theres Siege aswell wich has no trammel at all.

The thing is trammel did not entriley remove pvp it just tried to controll it.

theres still guildwarring in tram so you can have your open pvp but controll who gets to kill you :P

I pvp activley in both tram and fel and i aslo steal stuff on siege image  so again..dont talk about stuff

you dont know nothing about.. its not nice towards other people to lie about games

According to UO's own website, they appear to have about two dozen instances, or shards. However, I will admit that after I answered the OP's question, I realized he was probably talking about instanced content, rather than the game as a whole being instanced.

For: complex combat system, non-instanced zones, open PvP with 'sophisticated' crafting and Political system...

UO-Fel, EvE or Shadowbane seem to meet your requirements.

Oh, I played UO for 6 years. I know what its about. The current version of UO doesn't cut it with its pre conceived and limited PvP. I should really have been clearer about what I consider to be viable PvP. And its definately not walking up to someone and asking them if they want to fight etc etc.

But, your right. Siege may be a good option.

I really enjoyed Shadowbane for the limited time I played it, however, it kept crashing on my system which rendered it unplayable.

PlanetSide is entirely based on PvP, and even on the European server, which is the lowest populated, you can still find a fight reasonably quickly.

Off-topic, but Elnator, have you tried the Irth trial? If you have, how are you finding/found it?

This will probably get me shot , but i feel for friends who are still playing SWG. So i will suggest SWG, along with WOW ,EVE or DAOC . All four have what you seek .
