Wondering if there are many others out there that have the same problem..
no matter what mmorpg i try, i keep returning to this game... whenever i thought i managed to finally build a new addiction, eve is waiting around the corner, and after a short blackout, i find myself logged in again, the other game accounts cancled...
i have yet to put my finger on the exact reason for this behaviour, but i guess it must have something to do with the fact that i love open-ended, everything-goes style games...
it might also be the lvl of dev to playerbase communication i have yet to find with any other game..
i had breaks for COH, AO, SWG, WOW, but even though i have long cancled these again, my accounts for eve are still active.
it seems every now and then theres a thread popping up, comparing eve to some other mmorpg, but i came to realize that it simply cannot be compared to any other game. Since my time in pre-trammel UO i didnt have that feeling of freedom, to do whatever i wanted to do, only limited by my imagination (and maybe my wallet )
granted, EVE got a steep learning curve, and 14days arent even remotely enough to get a grasp of the games potential , but where you go from there is entirely up to you (and mind you, you can even archive things going solo... but thats the extra hard trip then)
i guess, what people have to realise about this game, the only real thing they should realise in fact, is that the more you put into the game, the more you get out. there is no quest story line guiding you from one event to the next, and you certainly wont get content spoonfed to you. if you are seeking for such a game, eve wont be the right game for you.
however, if you take your time, and embrace the game, you will discover theres a rich story, mostly evolving from player interactions. there are wars out there, and there are financial moguls with the power to stall whole region markets with the snap of a finger, and they are all players, that started out in the same (or comparable) startership as yourself.
another point i have heard here and elsewhere is people saying eve isnt a mmorpg, but rather a mmo. then of course, i have to ask, where the definition of rpg is? someone playing the market virtously or an evil sob pirate killing and looting every passerby is in my pov as much a roleplayer as the noble amarrian fighting the terrorist scum or the matari freedom fighter trying to bust the chains of slavery on his people.
one more thing before i stop my somewhat aimless post
i allways hear people saying that you have to mine or do agent missions for money..
honestly, mining IS a possibility. as is agent running. and i guess, its partly the tutorials fault for only showing these 2 avenues of income (and possibly a 3rd in the form of rat hunting) that many people start out mining/agent whoring and then turning away from the game in disgust.
the fact is, making money in eve depends heavily on your imagination. be crative, and you can, with little investment make profit$$$. thats the whole deal about this game i guess... it rewards out of the box thinking, wheather youre criminal or honest, having good ideas will help you to reap in the rewards.
hmmm..
/me looks at what he typed so far
dont ask me why i felt to post this, but hell, its the way i feel about this game.
i will continue to try out other games too (atm im downloading lineage 2 client) but i know, no matter what i start, i will allways return to eve online.
so, see you on Tranquility,
yours, Manfred Doomhammer

Hi my name is Arcticblue2 and I'm a eve addict.
I am soon at my second year (less than a month to) and still a addict.
Played eve- then quit to try other games. After a year.. I went back to eve, playing it none stop.
Some might say, "Im confused arent addicts supposed to quit... "
No sonny... not really!!! Hurray beer as well
Hi, I'm Leon and i find that participation in group operations in the game can further your addiction. Nothing like wanting to go to bed early for am 8am class when your corp leader comes on and says he wants to do the 10/10 complex and next thing you know it's 4am and you figure "what's the point of sleeping now?"

I downloaded the free trial a couple of weeks ago to try something different. I left EQ2 and am waiting for Vanguard to come out. I'm very glad that I didn't discover this game when it originally came out as the last 2 years of my life would have been consumed by this game. As a new player, it's not possible for me to compete with players that have millions of skillpoints, but I do enjoy the game very much. I can see how easily it is to get addicted. The completely open-ended game play is fabulous. Depending on my mode, I can mine, do missions, solo or group rat hunt or just goof around. It's not for everyone, but I'm glad I found it.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
And my favorite relevant quote, "Rehab is for quitters"
nice one
to be honest though, i dont know how you would have liked the game 2.5 years ago when it hit shelves (literally )
it was quite unfinished at release, but CCP did an incredible effort do work out the quirks...
(starting it all with booting their publisher S&S)
A few tips to being a true addict:
1) Restroom and eating breaks. Only take these if you are doing long space jumps. If you set your navigation to fly through safe zones then your mind can be at ease. If theres no way around low sec areas then you may need to invest in a bottle or porta-potty. Keeping a mini-fridge and microwave next to your computer also helps cut down on time away from the game too.
2) Sleep. CCP schedules daily downtime for 1 hour each day. Then is when you sleep. Invest in a comfortable chair that can perhaps recline all the way back. Also keep an alarm clock nearby so you don't lose those precious first minutes. Only receiving one hour of sleep tends to make your adrenaline shoot up a little more making you alert to even the smallest things. Also invest in a coffee maker and buy stock in folgers coffee.
3) Work. Unless your already a millionare and have no need to leave the house then you need some way of funding your addiction. My suggestion is to find a technical based job with access to the internet, therefore allowing you at the least to cruise the internet and check out all of the eve associated content (what do you think I'm doing right now). If your lucky you can actually get enough access to actually play eve incogneto in your cubicle. If none of these options are viable then now is the time to catch up on more sleep.
You also have to deal with the time period of driving to and from work. A laptop with wireless connection can help calm the craving during this transaction. If you feel that this is unsafe and poses a driving violation the I would invest in taking the city bus.
4) Some family members and/or friends may be concerned about your health and state of well ebing. EVE-mail then stating that your fine and doing well. Should they mention that you need some sunlight and fresh air you can solve this by placing the PC next to a large window that has the ability to open. An even better solution is to wire your deck or porch for internet capabilities thus allowing you to effectivly leave the house.
5) When upgrading your PC always ask and make sure that the following items are eve compatible. A little mistake such as this can mean serious downtime.
6) For true addiction invest in a generator in case of blackouts and your own internet/network server in case your service provider has unexpected downtime. If these 2 options seem a little too extreme then also use this time for sleep and make sure to let the power company and internet host know to call you as soon as service is back up.
been playing for 19 days so still a noob . slowly getting to grips with it . since hurting my back last sat ive been doing between 2 and 12 hrs a day.
i dont know how this all started .
all i know is I NEED a Battleship
I NEED to Mine and i dont know why
(this post was written while sat in vilinnon belt 5 . someone help me )
I know what you mean I've been playing since october and I just can't get enough! My cmputer died after my first month and I had to scramble to build a new one so I could continue playing Eve! I only lament the lost skill training time during my down period
Let me tell you, getting that BS won't be enough After finding a great corp and mining like crazy, I have aquired a few Cruisers, a BS, a Hauler, assorted Frigates, and I am now working on an assault frigate. It will never be enough, there is always that next skill a week away, a tech II module, or the next level of agent missions to keep you going. This is a long term game! Hell, I have a hard time being able to play anything else because I know I am missing something on Eve.
Kudos to the tireless souls at CCP for creating the best MMO (rpg or not) that I Have Ever Played. Rock on
"Well they say playing EVE too much is bad for you, but where's the evidence?"
(Agricola snorts a line of crash then headbutts an Amarr eunuch to death)
And tips for EVE, if you drink beer from bottles while playing keep the empty bottles by your side. Whenever it's time to camp a station I always need a pee (you know what I'm saying), but as for a bracen bit well that's what safe spots are for!

/me agrees and wounders if downtime will be shortened today.
Unlike you lucky people In europe and America, downtime is not suited for my situation and so My addiction is spilt in two daily. Being A full time student and Part time worker, I only have late night gaming and Downtime is midway through my 5 hours of game time... 10-11pm. This addiction is only a month and a bit old but I shall never let this game slip; between my fingers. Cruiser missle... 0_0 so close
/me stretches out fingers
I can feel their power, need Cruiser Missles!
Must...
Have ...
Cruiser...
Missles!
/me sits down and rocks
Only 5 more days, only 5.
BTW I am a New Eve-Addict

M Doomhammer,
From my own experience Eve is like a cycle, you have fun with it then you get bored and quit. Then probably some guy tells you "Hey! I'm doing level 3 missions and I make 50M a day with loots and more with implants" and you think "dammit I want to try it too", then they nerf the mission and you realize you have to play 6hRs a day to reach your objective and you quit.
Then another guy tells you "forget about level 3, I make level 4 in my Raven and earn 400M in a week with no risk", and you come back and then they nerf the mission and you realize that you're back with the 6Hrs a day, and you quit.
Then another guy tells you, "Complexes are a must ! you earn rare BPC and make 600M a week !", again you come back and everybody is camping the complexes and you realize you should camp a complexe 6 Hrs a day to reach the objective.
That's my own experience, I always lack money and/or skill to be at the right place at the right moment. Thus, I always endup grinding for hours while others already found the next golden goose. And then I get bored because most of the time in Eve getting rich means whether finding the golden goose or spend half of your life behind your computer screen.
IRL comes first.
Bah! Real life is for losers!
OK I have a question, Once I had my GF give me a BJ whilst I was at the comp. Because I was going through low sec and Amamake was dangerous that night (Weekend).
Does that make me
A: The ultimate EVE gamer?
B: A sad gamer?
C: The ultimate sad EVE gamer?
Ginger Magician (only WITH a sex life, and genitals)?

Now that is pretty funny. I would have to say
E: A very lucky guy.
My wife hit me in the head with a remote control, and I ended up loosing a Raven in the ensuing argument. Then got into a whole other argument because she made me loose it.
I'm an addict. I admit it. I stopped playing here and there, but I couldn't stay away for good. My life was great. I went outside! I played with the baby. I even went to movies with my wife. Now I'm a bumbling idiot again, sitting in a low lit with beer and cigarettes, playing all hours of the night, knowing that I only have a few hours left till I have to "wake up" for work.
But, if it wasn't EVE, I'd be out at the pubs constantly, so my wife forgives me for these misgivings. Plus, I taught the baby how to use F1, F2, F3 ... F8. Now, I'm a good dad! Thank you EVE.
