I must confess. I have discovered that I am a carebear I guess. I don't grief other players. I try to help others as much as is reasonable and I don't appreciate it when my kindness and generosity is repaid with a knife in my back and my corpse looted. Not too many games have this harse a penalty, but I do not like losing xp and/or more cause some leet kiddie has nothing better to do than show off his uberness by griefing others.
I enjoy PvP a lot and I'm not a griefer. I've never camped corpses, ganked a n00b or any of that rubbish. Playing Shadowbane in beta and early release was about the best time I've had in an online game. (I like rpgs, I dislike games such as WWIIOnline) Since UO and Shadowbane, I've been disappointed in the PvP in every game I've played.
These days, I don't just want good PvP though... I want good PvE, too. All the bells and whistles. Unfortunately, no one seems to want to accomodate me. I don't even bother looking for a game with decent PvP anymore. The PvP in the games out today generally just annoys me. I tend to avoid it and even choose non PvP servers... sometimes even RP servers... mostly because of the caliber of community. In my opinion, the PvP at the grocery store is better than what I've seen in the recent crop of big name games.
I'm sure I'll give the new crop of games being released in the near future a fair try, but I won't hold my breath. For the most part, I have not found the lesser budgeted independantly published games to be up to my standard of quality. (yes, yes... I want shiny and pretty, too) If I do happen to stumble upon one, however, I will support the hell out of it!
Permadeath isnt the only issue at hand here folks. Hell, I think permadeath is a lousy idea with current MMO cookie-cutter Everquest gmes. Permadeath is not for cookie-cutter Everquest games folks. This issue isnt solely restricted to permadeath, and it never has been.
Carebears, stop being reactionary and engage in the debate for once.
Originally posted by Munki more challanging.. I beg to differ. In most PvP you can just zerg... most PvP is a zergfest in games. Most players dont have imagionation. And game mechanics dont support any other tactic other then zerging. There are no supply depots toattack, there are no strategic targets to take out. There are no communication systems to attack. OF COURSE ITS A ZERG FEST! Duh, the game mechanics say, "If you PvP you will zerg." There are no other options. PvE has set encounters with limits to the players and scripted challanging events. once youve done it a hundred times it gets easy, but anything gets easy like that. PvE is not always easier than PvP. I rember in UO, travel in a pack of 10 people, and you could roll over everyone. I find it excessively difficult to coordinate with other players online, when real life intrudes to them or me. Kudos to those that can pull it off. Not challange in that. In WoW pre BG you could just travel in a large group and zerg. In PvE you have a set 40 person limit, and you have to learn encounters which can take weeks sometimes. WHile were on the WoW example, BG's have set limits, but once people learn how to do them, its just like a PvE encounter they just run thought it systematically and boom their done, no more challanging than a boss fight youve done 100 times before. Perosnally I like a bit of both. They are both fun as long as doing one doesnt overshadow the other, IE PvE in WoW gets you somewhere, PvP doesnt really.

I've found that PvP is disruptive to any story the developers hope to create. I never could play a PvP game long enough to make friends and join a guild but I sure could play one long enough to be ganked multiple times in the nubee field. I play a MMORPG to be a Hero or Anti hero like Drizzt from the Forgotten Realms novels or Aragorn from LOTRs. This means I want to slay Dragons, defeat Orcs and stop bandits from taking over a town or some such. Not be killed over and over by the same guy who really isn't even a part of the world at all but just some other "Joe" with more time on his hands than me. Now if the story is this Players from one land vs Players from another land then I suppose it works OK but it doesn't appeal to me. I want much more than "My dudes vs your dudes" in a Fantasy or Space games. For me the thrill of defeating L33TgAnKer doesn't even come close to the feel of victory from me and others defeating a Dragon with a name, a lair and a History that belongs in the world.

Thats what single player games are for. That's a pretty over-generalized statement. MMORPGs pretty much spread from two different games. UO which was all about PvP and EQI which was all about PvE. Many have had the idea to combine them but these people generally do not play nice together unless regulated like with DAOC's battlegrounds and WOW's that followed. I've enjoyed several single player games like Baldur's Gate I and II however they are very linear and many "carebears" or PvEers or whatever you call us like the freedom of a MMORPG without the added problems associated with non-regulated PVP. Nothing in a single game can give the same feeling as high lvl raids, quests for that "epic" weapon etc. A large community want those things without PvP. Many of those PvE people contributed to that initial 450,000 in the first EQ that made MMORPGs a viable market for games like WOW and such to follow. I doubt all of us can just run off and play Dungeon Seige II and be happy.

Actually, single players games are for the PvP people... us carebears actually play the MMORPG, because it's a @$%@%^ role-playing game. You PVP people want a MMOPVPG... so if you don't mind, get off my servers.
I agree though that PvP puts the intelligence and realism into a game. Hunting an AI is fun, but not as fun as going up agianst another brain. Its called competition. Comeptition is what makes teams. The tougher the victory the stronger the bond between teammates. No competition; no teams. Ese no es nada.
Don't agree with this one.
No.1 Realism. For realism I suggest simulation games, NOT MMO's.
AI vs Human brain. I find it very rare that human brains are much smarter than AI. They are also very impatient. When I want to play against a combination of different enemies in a themed game, humans won't play ball. They all just camp the choke points or rush to the spawn or some other equally predictable move that any AI can do also. They are inflexible, undisciplined. Human nature cannot be removed from their behavioural patterns.
NO.2 "Competition is what makes teams". No it isn't. People make teams. I regularly team up without ever playing PvP.
The tactics of co-operation remain the same. In PvP the emphasis is on killing the other players, in PvE the emphasis is on mutually supporting your team. Both gamestyles promote teamwork, but PvE is the best for teambuilding.
I also find that pvp is a tosser magnet, the proportion of smacktalkers, griefers and over competative types is a real turn off for me. By no means do I dislike all or even most pvp'ers, but I still find more people i dislike playing pvp.
Allow me to offer you a couple stereotypic examples.
PVP CHUMP NO.1
There's that guy who because he defeated you believes he is superior and loves to taunt you about how useless you are compared to him.
? Hello ?
Is my self esteem so low I am really to believe him? Is it actually true that I am a sad loser? Or is he just insulting me in my own home on my expensive equipment on a game service I pay to use? No manners no intrest. Find someone else to make you feel good about yourself.
PVP CHUMP NO.2
There's that guy who simply must be the best. Numero uno. His driving desire is to be the no.1 bestest in game hardman. The ultimate winner. In conversation he is lively and fun. You think he is your friend, but he isn't. He isn't capable of having friends. He may only have fun with you as long as you are winning. If he meets a "better player" than you. He will be too busy to talk or team with you from then on. If it looks like your position in the "dreamteam" endangers his, he will manouvre to have you kicked. He takes his game very seriously and considers himself to be a Hardcore Gamer.
Sorry mate but I've won enough ladders and tournaments. I've made enough money and kudos in my life not to need to chase after any more. Loyalty is part of the equation in friendship and a person incapable of it, isn't on my list of preferences.
PVP CHUMP NO.3
The Guild boss. This pvper has a vision. His guild will be the guild of all guilds, much like CHUMP NO.2. This is where his loyalty lies. Invitations to his guild depend on level or rank and not personal friendship or shared sense of humor. PvP CHUMP NO.3 is a team player. In order to hang out with him you must sacrifice yourself to the greater good of the guild. Give up tribute to the guild hierarchy and re-configure your character to the specifications the guild decides. Of course the guild boss decides who is in the hierarchy and what specifications the guild requires.
Once again, no thanks control freak. You want to config another character get a second account. I have my own account that I pay for. If you wish to volutneer your time and loot to the guild, more power to you. If you demand that I must "volunteer" mine, you have lost my intrest. This PVP CHUMP is incapable of treating another human as an equal. His basic disregard for the intelligence of all others is intrinsic in his every action. My self esteem is not so low that I am willing to spend time with this person.
PVP CHUMP NO.4
The multiplayer cheat. Yet another one who takes competition too seriously. This one is every bit as bent on "The Title" as CHUMPS n0.2 and 3. He however has found a different route to success.
No thanks mate. I'll stick to PVE where cheats are unheard of. Zapping a gazilion noobs with your uberleet players skills or in this case programming skills, isn't a big turn on. The attitude is wrong. Every victory you achieve is at the expense of another players fun.
Anyone of the above chumps regularly ruins online games for their fellow players to the point where they no longer wish to play that game ever again.
Obviously there are many more types of PvP'ers and they don't by any means all fit into this bracket. Nonetheless PVP is where the chumps hang out in droves. I am not intrested in inviting these kinds of people to share my free time with me. Not everything about multiplayer is good. There are nearly as many people who I specifically don't want to play with as do.
PVP is a tosser magnet. Mostly I can't be bothered to deal with these kinds of people. If you paid me, it would be different. In general I pay a premium in life not to have to suffer spastics. I pay extra to live in a nice area, pay extra to eat at nice places etc etc etc.
I'm a carebear, I get my kicks helping people, not killing them.

I'm a carebear too. I didn't even like the PvP in WoW. I just get tired of it. The only PvP that is fun to me is voluntary and much like DAoC. But I'm just happy doing PvE most of the time.
Why don't you PvP folks play some football or rugby or something? Break a few bones, get a bloody nose and a black eye and live it up! Or better yet, get off your computer, join the military, and go fight in Iraq. We need you over there. I'm betting it's cuz you ain't fit enough.

Originally posted by Ashkent I don't care for PVP that much. When I do PVP or play a game like a MMORPG, I sure as hell do not want to put hundreds of hours into a character only to see him die in 2 minutes and lose everything. I can't understand why people actually like that? I guess maybe if you WIN every fight, its cool, but not to the people who lose. god i hate the word carebear. its such a stupid description anyway.
Ok thats fine, now don't come to PvP and whine that its too tough for you, thats why people hate carebears, they invade PvP servers and complain that its too difficult, they do it in mass numbers, and shit gets nerfed, it's very annoying.

Hmmmm..ok I see your point. I have a broader meaning in the phrase "PvP". You have a narrow sense of PvP. Careful with your assumptions. When you stereotype you box them all in and leave no freedom for people to grow up and out.
Machines are still programmed. Not everyone is smart enough to do it. Not everyone is smart enough to adapt.
Not everyone; but someone. That someone is what makes it a challenge and exciting.
Do you see the difference? The human element is exciting or more exciting I should say than a mob that once you watch it 10 times in action it will repeat that action another million times.
Competition is what makes teams. Heres my point. Competition agianst machines, animals, weather, disaster, and yes even agianst other humans draws people together for a common team. Humans rise to the occasion. Working harder and relying on eachother out of necessity, almost forced to. When forced to rely on others; true friendship and trust is proven.
My point is the greatest competition creates the greatest teams. My premise is that human intelligence presetns the greatest challenge and therefore the greatest competition. But to each his own.
Im no ganker FPS'er honing in on your MMORPGs. I just like the human element of competition, which I think creates the greatest team experience. Please dont stereotype it into humping corpses and l33t speak.
We both know that is just boys being boys. Which is rather funny at times I might add. lol
I hope the next round of games builds on the WoW success and gives us better competition. D.V.
I believe a good MMORPG should give you the option to CHOOSE if you want to be in PvP mode or not. That way the little devil on your shoulder and the little angel on the other can both be satisfied. Although I definately tend to fall on the carebear side.......
Sometimes you feel like a pwn, sometimes you dont!
I agree, Danielle. Although I probably lean more towards a game with good PvP, choice is the way to go in my opinion, too. The more options, the better.

I also agree....I want more choices in my games...Not less.
But I also think that some dev out there needs to create a FFA pvp MMORPG for all the rabid pvpers out there so that we can see how popular a title like that really would be.

Hmmmm..ok I see your point. I have a broader meaning in the phrase "PvP". You have a narrow sense of PvP. Careful with your assumptions.
A broader meaning of "player vs player"? For me PvP means when you fight other human controlled avatars. What does it mean for you?
When you stereotype you box them all in and leave no freedom for people to grow up and out.
Machines are still programmed. Not everyone is smart enough to do it. Not everyone is smart enough to adapt.
Not everyone; but someone. That someone is what makes it a challenge and exciting.
Do you see the difference? I can't understand what you are trying to say.
The human element is exciting or more exciting I should say than a mob that once you watch it 10 times in action it will repeat that action another million times.
The mob won't react the same each time, because each time the team is made up of humans. They are incapable of repeating the same tactic over and over without getting bored. Teamplay is fascinating because with each new team member the team dynamic changes and a new tactic is required to defeat the same obstacle. What you have to watch for and understand in this circumstance, is not the change in enemy tactics, but the change within the team.
But for me, I don't play for competition. I never compete with machines, I play with them.
My point is the greatest competition creates the greatest teams. My premise is that human intelligence presetns the greatest challenge and therefore the greatest competition. But to each his own.
I agree that human interaction presents a greater challenge than single player. But I am not looking for competition. I am perfectly capable of challenging myself without fighting other people. Thats not to say I don't understand the enjoyment of competative play, only that mostly it isn't my cup of tea. Enjoyment (and even challenge) can equally be found from other activities too.
For myself, the funnest people create the greatest teams. I have succeeded against enough challenges already. It's not such a priority.
Im no ganker FPS'er honing in on your MMORPGs. I just like the human element of competition, which I think creates the greatest team experience. Please dont stereotype it into humping corpses and l33t speak.
I am an FPS'er. When I am looking for PvP thats the kind of game I prefer. I'm not really intrested in PvP in a roleplay enviroment it doesn't compliment the parts of the game I enjoy most.
We both know that is just boys being boys. Which is rather funny at times I might add. lol
I'm not really intrested in playing with these kinds of boys. While I can appreciate the humor. I don't. Boys being boys are capable of some pretty ugly behaviour. It's a turn off and a contributary factor in why I don't bother with PvP that much. Self discipline is a social skill.
I am aware that many people do enjoy smacktalking eachother, taunting, bragging and gloating. If that's what you enjoy, no reason for you to stop.
I enjoy social interaction, but that's not my flavour. Total strangers who behave in this fashion towards me have a habit of remaining total strangers.
I hope the next round of games builds on the WoW success and gives us better competition. D.V.
I agree. I think the PvP in WoW is well done. Although I don't personally have any intrest in playing it, It adds depth to the game and provides wider opportunities for people to enjoy themselves. I am pleased at it's inclusion.
My PvP needs, however, will continue to be serviced elsewhere.
