It actually didn't sweep the potential market. In Korea it did terribly; and there is a huge audience there. With more network upgrades and people getting better computers in the United States in the coming years more people will have access to mmorpgs. Thats when we will see higher numbers in the mmo market.

A single game cannot cover everything, so there isnt gonna be a "game that replaced all other games". You humans are too different to have same tastes. Thats why there are many sports, not just one sport called ... "Sport". Some people like fighting, some PvPing, some crafting, some roleplaying. So there will always be different kinds of games, some mainstreem, some niche.

What is gonna be the next mainstreem game that will be immensily popular? Probaly something like WoW, easy to get into, fun to play, but the fun doesnt stop at high end. Basicaly, the game's success directly derives from "things" you can do in it. If all you can do is grind or quest, game wont go far.

    Rise of the dead....

But what I like about this post...is that people thought DDO was going to sweep the market...lol.  Now look at it.

All the games have different market targets... a combination of potentially new players plus trying to take players away from one or more existing games...

Vanguard - will take some from eq and eq2, don't know how they will get new players (people that have never played an mmo before). Eq2 might get hit the hardest by this game.

AoC - conan fans and it might take some away from WoW... people 20+ in age that long for something a little more seedy.

WAR - should definately take some away from WoW as well... pvp, and a look that wow people should be comfortable with. And more world-pvp, something a lot of x-wow players are ticked about blizz removing from their game.

LOTR - Will get the tolkien fans, as long as they stick with the lore. Going to be a hard crowd to please on lore. Will grab a few from other games as well. (Tolkien probably the most read fantasy literature of the previous century?). A huge potential player base, and the one title that stands to bring in the most NEW mmo players of anything out there. But turbine? Is it possible from them not to screw it up? hmm...

STO - If they build it, trekkies will come. However, I think trek (as a phenom) has been on the decline since Roddenbury died... the shows/movies turned into space soap operas and lost that make-ya-think aspect that made them so interesting. (well, i'm giving away my age)... but I would love it if this game survived, being a trekie myself...

TCoS, PotBS, and others...  all too novel to tell at this point. More than likely they will have great ideas, and other games will take note and copy, and if they are lucky, they will get enough players to keep it going. I hope they succeed, cause innovation is really needed in the genre right now imo.

No one will dominate the market like wow just has. What will happen is a bunch of different games will pull people away from wow. WoW is the great MMO-INTRO game. There's going to be a lot of games that will make money pulling away wow-players. No need to market and generate all new mmo players, there are 10+ mill mmo players available now? Just copy wow, and take some aspect of wow and make it better (world-pvp, or realistic graphics, or whatever) and then pull people from wow based on that one distinction. You get 100-200k to stay with you for a year plus, and you are in the black.

This is what the developers are trying to do because they all want to make money.  However, I wish they would model their games on what the players actually want.  Unfortunately, greed will overshadow this.

My prediction is that no game will be a runaway success.  IMHO, a "runaway success" would be 500k or more.

...and in reply to someone back in Jan, you can have it all in one game.  Its just that nobody is willing to  do it.  The original version of SWG was supposed to have it (Not Pre-Cu, but what Koster originally had in mind) but since the runaway success of WoW, I am betting we will only see simple games like WoW for quite a while.

I agree to the letter. Makes me think u read my mind! Did'ya? Heh, anyways. WoW is gonna lose a lot of people to those new MMOs, but it would still stay on top for a long time. WoW's phenomenon will be recorded in the histoy forever. WoW to MMORPG is like Wolf3D to FPS. I will expect games in 2007 to take that which WoW was great at, make it better and add on to that. I realy hope AoC delivers. I love Conan books, the story, the history, the geography the characters in it.

Heres some info on the "real" cimmerians (my ancient ancestors btw) for anyone interested in learning about them:

Wow this post has been dead nearly a year.

Nothing made in the US/Europe will probably surpass WoWs numbers.  They're scope is just too narrow for such a thing.  Age of Conan is only targetting high-end computer users.  A big mistake for drawing people in.

Vanguard is targetting the EQ community which has been proven as a community who is unwilling to move onto new games.  Also they require a monster machine to run thier game too.

The Chronicles of Spellborn simply lacks publicity.

Warhammer lacks an audience in Asia.  It also doesn't have a fanbase as large as Warcraft in America or Europe.  Not to mention the common man hasn't even heard about this game yet.

For Star Trek Online, name one Star Trek game that has surpassed 2 million copies.  Its obvious there are alot of trekkies, but it doesn't look like they are fond of the games.

However, Granado Espada and Ragnarok Online 2 have already set the ground work to be great games that crush WoW.  As well as a few other Korean Titles like Huxley.

I really think that Potbs is on that while may not be the new warcraft it will do pretty dam well. I think there is a large number of MMO fans out there who are tierd of playing as Mage's and a Elves  etc.  I think Potbs  along with a few other in the works see that people are ready for something other fantasy. Plus even though  Potbs  is not only about priates it also has many other factions to play  as well.

Another reason I think Potbs will do fairly well is The USA and the world for that matter is in  a Pirate Frenzy with  little films staring the unkown actors ohhhh whats his face....Jonny something  and Orlando Forlida? nahh that is not his  name, well any ways that is besides the point thos silly little films are geting their own MMO and if you have seen it us big kids are porbley gonna wanna play something a little less kiddy.

So I am sure the other game you all listed are going to do great cuz if history has show if it an't broke dont fix it. But it is also just as good to step away from the crowd to do something diffrent.

Well there ya  have it my two cents it is not much take what ya will from it.
