Umm, You do realize the the first Elder Scrolls game came out in 1994 before MMOs were invented right? You also realize that the game has always been a free roaming, first person, RPG, right? I'd also probably guess that you were TOTALLY AWARE that TES was inspired mainly by Wizardry and Ultima Underworld.

C'mon, give the guy a break...he was only a toddler when it came out.

1. Lack of anything original. 2. EXTREMELY Poor Engine: Full of Bugs. Nothing works right. 3. Boring Quests 4. Crappy Dialog 5. Did I mention that it didn't bring ANYTHING original to the table?
I don't understand why so many ppl like this game. It's probably the same reason why the MMO Game industry is quickly declining in quality of the games it puts out.
Does anyone remember alignment? Yeah. Where is it? I see none in anything.
The main pull of TES is the fact that it's just about totally open. It doesn't bring anything new to the table because what they're trying to do is make a game driven by the player. I won't attempt to sell the game to you, if you don't like it - you don't like it. But yeah, my reasons for enjoying TES series are:
My alignment is as good or evil as I make it (You can have a bounty that eventually makes you known by nearly everyone in the world).
>I can choose to ignore the story and do things on my own if I want.
>I can choose to -attempt- to kill whoever I want, for no apparent reason.
>My character's abilities can be fully altered around my playstyle.
>There are few restrictions, period.
That's just me though. I believe those are what most people want in a "TES" mmo. The general idea, not a clone.

Umm yea. I've been a gamer since '84 :P Also, if you've done any reading, the devs (bethesda softworks) even said their concept for morrowwind was a giant immersive world that was completely interactive. Hmm...and MMOs are giant immersive worlds that are completely interactive...
So my statement remains true. Morrowwind is basically a single player MMO :P No need for it to be an MMO.

brian72282. No, your statement doesn't remain true. You said this originally and I quote
"Umm, you do realize that the idea behind Morrowwind was to take an MMO, and make it single player, right?"
There Idea WASN'T to TAKE A MMO and make a single player game out of it as you "ORIGINALLY" stated. Secondly trying to cover that statement up and coming up with that Morrowind is a single player game MMO is another false so, in ending of this, you are incorrect in both statements eventhough the second was to cover up your errors in the first place. Oh do you realize MMO stands for Massive Multiplayer Online? No TES game has been Multiplayer, let alone massive or even Online.. So even choosing any one of the acronyms would still be wrong!
However eventhough Arena was basically a larger world than most MMO's out there, maybe even Dereth (AC). Still it was never based around any MMO ideas since the only one out at the time wasn't shaped that way. Which I will explain below.
First off to Jimmy_Scythe, TES I Arena didn't come out before any MMO's were out. There was the original grandfather of all MMO' which for brian72282 I am surprised being a gamer since 1984 (shees, when I graduated from Junior College.) you would know about this game I am about to point out and more than likely have played it, if not then you aren't a true Old School RPGer
I am surprised that MMORPG.com doesn't have this original pasted permanently plastered on the main page or in some hall of heros page or something.. (don't forget to give me credit for this if you guys get any ideas from there hehe j/k)
However, if you noticed NwNO was out even before TES1. But that doesn't make brian correct either. So both of you are wrong. so there :P
But, Brian, before you go ranting off about something, you should get your facts straight or suffer the consequences be getting flamed and etc... Or best yet, go read up on some stuff over at www.elderscrolls.com ...If I linked this topic over to their site you will get a handleful of some truth, some education and more lore about TES plus you will find out that Jimmy and I were only being very friendly to your reply.
EDITIED FOR : Just to save any arguements I will quote this from the "History page" at NwNO archive site.
Neverwinter Nights was the beginnings of wha is now termed a "massive" online roleplaying game, one of the first of its genre. It still holds true to be the best strategic online game to date. The idea originated from three companies, namely SSI, TSR, and AOL. The game first appeared on America Online in 1991, and had a successful run and huge following until AOL suddenly closed the gates to Neverwinter in July of 1997.
Well, now you're gonna make me go find the whole dev chat where they stated they were drawing from the idea of a massive world, like MMOs are doing, but make it only for 1 person to be in.
I kind of remember nwn, but well, it's been so long, I'm not gonna even try and fib and talk about it. In '84 I was 2, but I can clearly remember my father getting me an Atari and setting me down to play for hours at a time when he had friends over. I've played online games since...about 94 I think. MUDs mainly.
Anyways though, I fully remember Arena, and it was a huge game. However, I'm not entirely sure Bethesda made the first two TES games, and as such, could very well be inspired from those as well as MMOs. I just remember that one of the devs said they were inspired by MMOs (at least partially). Hopefully I can find one of the chats still.

Only if they fixed the bugs with gaining primary skills with low level or easy actions.

No longer visiting MMORPG.com.
TES Online=Bad idea IMO. It would lose what makes it so special, being the main focus of the story. I don't think anyone could replicate that online.
