Are we buying games we won't play???

Seems that many of us have that one big game we are waiting for:  EQ2, WoW, Ultima Odyssey X, etc.  But in the meantime, all of these 2nd generation second-stringers are coming out:  Final Fantasy XI, Horizons, etc.  I find myself buying these lesser games just to fill in the time until EQ2 launches, but invariably I tire after just a few game sessions.  I spent $59.99 on Final Fantasy, the same on Star Wars Galaxies, and about $68 on the game and booklet for Horizons, and never played any of these games more than a week or so.  Just couldn't get into them.  Didn't really want them when I bought them, but felt this urge to fill the entertainment gap left by EQ (which I enjoyed for three or four years, but just cannot bring myself to play now).

MMORPG's are very addicting and buying these second rate games are like the temporary fixes of a drug addict (i.e., sniffing glue because he can't get coke, etc).

I'll be glad when March rolls around and there are some real contenders to the MMORPG genre.

Oh yea my suggestion to you is to keep those games installed on ur pc. When ur bored just take a walk around any of those games. Either that or you could mail me those games.

Ha, I'd mail 'em to you if I could, but I've used up the codes.  Guess I can afford these games.  Still, I feel burned every time I shell out $60 and find out two hours later it was another mistake.

I buy the games because I think I'm going to want to play them.  Perhaps they end up going to waste on my hard drive (AC2 sure did), but I certainly didn't get them to fill in any gaps.

I'm also not holding my breath for EQ2, WoW, or any other MMOG.  SWG proved how high expectations can be and how low reality can set in.  Blizzard is going to have a hell of time living up to the expectations people have of WoW.

Yeah. I saw a reviewer who went to Gen Con said that 'WoW at its current "Alpha" stage is more polished then anarchy online and many other mmorpgs out there'. I guess blizzard is pretty serious on making this a freaking perfect game.

I too am waiting for WoW, but let me tell ya something I'm not holding my breath, so many times being disappointed about games that are coming out then come out and suck! Why in the hell can't they just get right.

To be bluntfully honest, most of these companies are thinking; lets get these games out sooner, the sooner they're out the sooner they'll get addicted.  The sooner the addiction the more money we will make.  If the game is not fully polished, they'll learn to deal with it.  We just want the money right now.
This seemed to be the case with Star Wars Galaxies, but in the end, the game has actually polished itself and is looking VERY appealing at this time.  I wish to go buy this but right now my funds have been cut a little dry due to some RL situations.  Now, if this game had not had the bad reputation it had by being half-assed I would have gotten it right away.  They have lost countless thousands of dollars by throwing the game out too soon.  That can surely make a company lose their game.

MMORPG genre is still fairly new.  At this time it would be wise for people to polish their games, if it means delaying the game then so be it.  Polishing the game before it has been released will surely keep a lot of players coming.  Blizzard is making sure that their game will be able to stand time.  Polished engine, great content and awesome appeal to players beyond the WarCraft (RTS) style gaming.  Any company that does this will surely end up being successful.  Blizzard may take their time and frustrate players, but in the long run who ends up winning many GAME OF THE YEAR AWARDS? That's right, it's Blizzard.

Throwing half assed games into a high demand of player and customer satisfaction spells certain defeat.

Blizzard makes fine games, yes.  Fine multiplayer games, yes.

But MMOG isn't the same thing.  I sincerely hope they have a good launch, because there will be a lot of disillusioned phanbois out there phreaking out.

Your statement is true.  I hope that Blizzard does not fail in their suit of perfection or they'll let down their entire audience.  Myself included.

I also buy games thinking the reviews are good and look good.  Then I install it, use it a few weeks and bored with it, not many have kept my interest as they seem to be mainly all the same.  I suppose its from playing EQ from beta up until 7 months ago, now thats a long time to play one game and I still have both of my accts active incase I want to go back.

I usually don't buy alot of games for my PC but the few I have I've been disapointed in, only to uninstall them a few weeks later at most.  What a waste of money and I'm so glad I haven't bought to many, but this is just my opinion as everyone has there own thought.

Everyone knows Blizzard makes good games. Yes, though they have not touch on the MMO genre before, people are skeptical about how they gonna manage this game. I guess even themselves know that mmorpgs failure is due to the fact its released way too soon. You can see by how long they are taking to release WoW and all the delays etc.

I think Blizzard will produce a great mmorpg, however what will probably happen, is all the Warcraft fans who have never played a mmorpg before will try the game, only to find they don't like the genre and will hate it, bad luck for them i guess, as a fan of warcraft and a mmorpg player i can't wait.

You could see that they are trying to get more subscribers by making the mmorpg exist in the warcraft world. This way non-mmorpg players that are fans of the warcraft series will probably try out WoW. Something like how SWG is like. You take a popular trend and turn it into a mmorpg. I see blizzard gonna be a much richer company in the near future.

Yer, it's all for the money   SWG was just a disapointment for me aswell, a star wars fan but it wasnt the bugs or anything like that, it was the limited content. I hated the whole jedi system, think they should have been a starting proffesion but just have their power slightly dropped, because once the jedi become a common sight in the game, i'm sure they will find they are overpowered, but the thing i wanted most was to pilot a x-wing (they doin a expansion but still, too late for me), atleast if anything should have just completely coppied the whole system of one of the previous star wars games focused upon space. They could have made a mmorpg completely in space, any placed the game Freelancer? picture that space system + regulary mmorpg style on planets or space stations or huge ships, guild owned star destroyers the possibilities are endless.

 Going back to the original topic(didnt post about that) I stopped playing DAOC and SWG about the same time, was sad leaving DAOC, the community there (good times) at the moment i don't think any of the new mmorpg's out there are really stand out but thats just my opinion. I've been waiting for Lineage 2 for AAAAAAAAGESSSSSS n i know what'll happen, everyone who just found it will apply for beta n they will get it, same thing with WOW, EQ2 , Warhammer online  and Middle Earth online. It annoys me because having waited so long for beta i won't get it. I recently returned to playing games like Counter-Strike (played from beta 5.2 till release) and Day Of Defeat(dunno what beta it was up until 1.6, I HATED THAT UPDATE!!!!, i couldnt aim at all with the new system and stopped, pitty aswell at the time, was number 1 for 4 months straight on Australias (arguably) number one server provider for the game with the best players around. However i still hate the new dod sytem and as for cs, cant find a server without a wallhacker or aimbot or something. But i got Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy about a week ago, n i'm still playing it, however having finished single player in 2 days multiplayer is getting boring and i'll probably stop with that soon aswell.... so bassiclly my only solution for games between now and the next release of a good mmorpg seems to be a good game of minesweaper or solitaire.

And also for the people drawn to WOW because of the warcraft series, i really feel sorry for them with what is about to come... can already see them on the official WOW message board, a sad sight, i think they should go play one of the various mmorpg's that have free 30 day trials (theres a few) just to get a handle on the ideas of a mmorpg, atleast then they will know what to expect. The thing is though, personally, i don't want a billion warcraft fans running around with no idea of mmorpg's cause they will annoy me (just hope open PvP muahaha lol) However if they all get into the whole mmorpg thing, WOW could be the most populated mmorpg out there, and without alot of people a mmorpg just turns into a morpg. The games are based on high user populations and warcraft will bring the people, i guess it really does depend on how Blizzard makes the game, if they do a good job they'll probably stick around if not... well i'll be pissed off aswell.

You know, as much as people might bitch about Earth and Beyond its not that bad of a game, they have recently opened 2 new sectors and added a load of content. Don't get me wrong I stopped playing for a reason, but there is hardly any lag and the community is awesome, plus the devs really do put their heart and soul into each update( not to mention that the devs recently moved from a 4 week patch cycle to a 6 week patch cycle) Oh, I stopped playing cause of the ks'ing and lack of content and places to go. Just my humble opinion
