Leaving for BT in 3 days! Any thoughts?

So, about 2 month's ago I enlisted in the US Army (active duty). I have had quite a bit of time to prepare for this MAJOR life change, it's getting close to saying "Bye Bye" to the small city life i have always known of, my question is for the people out there that have experienced this feeling first hand.

I'm currently having all sort's of different thoughts, all positive but some nervous. If anyone can share some of thier experiences with this type of life change please do. What can i expect? Tell me a few simple Do's and Dont's, i have heard many stories from friends and what not but thought I would get a few others views and experience with it.

PS. Don't tell me NO DONT JOINZZZ!!!! or whatnot, I have made my decision a long time ago and stand strong with my choice. Lol I have heard "no please dont go" from numerous friends (and girl friend) so many times it is rediculous, so no matter what you say it wont affect me image.

Hmmm Private CrazyFool, has a nice ring to it don't you think?

I can tell you I'm going into the Air Force this year. I do know your going to go to boot camp first. Other than that. I wish you good luck, I hope you had enough simulation (couch video games) for the real thing.

I might be seeing you someday too.

I thank you for that insightful post. I do not support the reasons for this war either but I do support my country. Also, I enlisted in the Army to not only serve my country but to better myself all together. Decent pay, minimal to no living costs, get to travel, and $37K for school once im done (thanks GI Bill) are among many benefits I will receive during and after my enlistment.

So the only thing I will say to you is -

Have fun with college loans, that is if you get accepted image

Yes, I leave for basic training in 3 days, im headed to Fort Leanordwood, Missouri. Lol should be a blast, my AIT is Combat Engineer. Thank you for the support everyoneimage

Thats why I'm going into the force too. My parents don't want me screwing over loans. It took my aunt years to pay all her loans up. I'm not going that route.

Rikamuru what are you looking at for a job in the airforce? I currently have a good friend who is an aviation major at my local university and is in the ROTC program. He's all set up for the air force as a pilot of some sort. This kid is set up for life, he's starting out at the E3 pay level, and with the ROTC program he doesnt have to go through basic training.

Shaving cream, Razor, Toothpaste, Toothbrush, Deodorant (Not spray)... Anything not deemed necessary will be LOCKED UP or THROWN AWAY. Travel AS LIGHTLY AS POSSIBLE.... When you first get to BT you will most likely be in a processing station before being sent Down Range.... You'll be carrying your luggage and holding it for HOURS when you first arrive here.... If you move during this time, you're screwed! As far as the rest of the experience goes.... you really can't be told about it. You will hate your drill sergeant and first sergeant, you will hate your captain, you will hate the piece of shit low life people who are serving you food and treating you like garbage. You may be fighting for freedom but you just signed yours away. Good luck and have fun =)

What do you mean? I don't know. I do have many skills in aviation and I also one 4th place in a National aviation contest... I'm thinking on engineering though.

I know I can't be a pilot. People who wears contacts or glasses can't be pilots. That is what I hear.

The main point of basic training though is to make sure you know how to work under intense pressure. All the other stuff they teach you during basic is a tool to increase the pressure. They'll teach you many things during basic. All of which will be useful and important during your service and most afterwards as well (at least indirectly). However, if you can't learn to handle more stress in a few weeks than in your entire life to date, they don't want you.
    - When (not if) you screw up, don't apologize or explain, take responsibility for your actions.
    - The success of your squad/platoon/mission is more important than your own. A volunteer army is built on the prinicple of sacrifice of the inidividual for the greater good of the whole. Demonstrate you understand this in basic and you'll find your file flagged for a leadership course.
    - Pay attention to details. Even when you haven't slept in 3 or 4 days keep your emotions under control and think about what you're doing.
    - Don't quit. Not just the course itself but any endurance tests. It's better to finish a run at a slow jog than to stop or walk, or to finish a forced march with a full pack an hour late than to stop and wait for someone to send a truck back for you.
    - When possible shave before bed.
    - NEVER drink all your water unless there's already a resupply available. Drink lots of water whenever you can but if you get down to your last 1/2 litre ration yourself like it has to last several days.
    - The most important thing in the world is a pair of clean, dry socks. When you get to the field training portion keep a pair in a plastic bag in your day pack.

As for the naysayers, just because your countries' motivations for doing something are questionable doesn't mean the action itself wasn't the right thing to do. Many argue things were done for the 'wrong' reason, but it's hard to find someone that woould suggest Iraq, Afganistan and the world aren't better off for it. Even fewer (if any) honestly believe an immediate pull-out would improve things. 'Nuff said to encourage you, any more would be another thread with a different OP.

Our freedom went out the window with the Patriot Acts.

But I agree in supporting your country, and I admire the courage you have to step up and enlist.

No, Mr. Respectful, someone named Ronald Albert needs to be President of the USA.

If you respect people's choices then why would you tell someone named Ronald Albert to be silent about his own choice? Exact reasoning has never been popular among military people and their supporters so rest easy, I don't expect an answer.

To CrazyFool: Don't go, 37K is useless to a corpse. Then, of course, there's the more complicated issue of your being a part of a military machine that commits crimes against humanity every day; even if you're a cook or a chaplin, you will be directly oiling that machine of death same as the guy who kills a man with a rifle.

Mature statement... Do you even know the chance of dying in Iraq? Try less than 1%. The amount of deaths worldwide a day is about 100x the amount of deaths total in Iraq. So please, just remember kid, only YOU can stop asinine statements coming out of your mouth.

I think the war is a debacle, but people like you bring disgrace to your homeland.

  • noname12345noname12345 Member Posts: 2,267

Do YOU know how much fun it is in Iraq compared to student loans? I would pick student loans any day.

I love the people of America, I just hate the government with what there doing. So when I see someone is supporting them, and going into a war for few "benefits", I think its foolish.

No kidding worldwide death is WAY higher, but it doesn't take a genius to not enter a BATTLEFIELD.

And I guess the OP would pick Iraq anyday.

But wait, let me guess; like most teenagers your age, you think that what you think is best, is best!

I love the people of America, I just hate the government with what there doing. So when I see someone is supporting them, and going into a war for few "benefits", I think its foolish.

You love the people of America...But yet hate the government they keep on voting in, "Of the people, for the people!", beautiful. Just remember, it is a democracy.

Oh, and just remember. Everytime you pay your taxes you are supporting the government more than a soldier in Iraq. The soldiers are doing what they are told to do. Taxes supply the people in congress, to tell the soldiers what to do. So you are in essence paying for the "American War Machine."

No kidding worldwide death is WAY higher, but it doesn't take a genius to not enter a BATTLEFIELD.

Way higher? Oh, just a bit. But you apparantly missed the point. Living life, where in a war or not, means sooner or later, you're going to die.

Now the only difference is, during wars, you know the casualties: Most "civilians" blindly walk through life without knowing the casualties.

And to the contrary, sometimes it takes a genius to know to enter into battle.

Only cowards and fools will avoid confrontation at the cost of their convictions.

Thank God the forefathers did not have your mindset.

I give much thanks to everyone that is giving support to my decision, I appreciate it very much (more than you would ever think).

I still do not know why people are posting things like "dont join," "have fun dieing for nothing," and whatnot. I clearly stated not to post these types of messages, I am above and beyond that stage. I know not everyone may approve but sometimes you just have to respect the choices and goals people make for themselves.

I especially thank the few that gave me a little more insight on what to expect in basic training. I know that the first two weeks are very tough on a person (adapting to the new lifestyle, being away from family and friends), these things are all good to know. They really help a person know what to expect.

If anyone has any certain things they can remember from basic training please post your experienceimage

Hua! (sp?) 2 days to go...

I have a number of opinions so Ill give you the good news first.

Army life is GREAT! I spent 3 years in the Oz army straight from High School, it was the making of me as a man. It made me appreciate the simplest things in life, like being able to get out of bed when you want rather than when someone yells at you to get up. It made me appreciate the value of money, coz you work so damn hard for it. It taught me respect for people with more age and experience than me (sadly lacking in today's youth). It made me appreciate the efforts of the people that had gone before me in a way cvilians cant ever know. It gave me a deep love of history that is part of being involved in something like the military. It awakened my interest in politics, since most of the time your life depends on them.

I strongly recomend the military to any young man.

Ok so now the bad news.

Today like any other time in history, there are people in charge who dont seem to have much regard for the lives of their young citizens. To make matters worse they disguise their lack of care for youth under a shroud of caring more than the next guy. "We have to attack before someone attacks us". Generally that would be called paranoid psychosis, now its called strategy. Look how well its working too image

You HAVE TO understand that in joining you are willing to ignore the nature of the government you work for, whether you agree with their policies or not. If you agree, well that makes life a lot easier when you have to kill someone. If you dont agree then you still have to pull the trigger and sleep at night. If you can do that, your a professional soldier, if you cant, now is the time to think about it, not when your enemy is rushing your position.

So people will tell you to join or not join based on their own political biases. Even I have revealed a bit of where I stand, but I dont use it make decisions about joining an army because that is not only dumb, it misses the entire point of soldiering.

Soldiering is a job, instead of using a screwdriver (even though you can) you use a gun. If you worked at a mechanic shop and didnt like the way the boss fixes cars, youd speak up or leave. Its the same in the military except you may as well just leave. The government isnt going to change its policies to suit you. The sooner you accept that why your fighting is completely and utterly irrelevant to you, the longer you will survive and the better job you will do as a soldier and the better use you will be to your team mates.

Watch Black Hawk Down. Only one guy in the whole movie gets it...

"Its about the man next to you" Hoot

    GOOD LUCK MAN!! image

Im not much on giving advice... just opinions usually... But...

I was watching the news and a war veteran politician, says this is the worst time to ever be in the army. I got no army experience but, just passin the info around.

Professor Hubert Farnsworth - That question is less stupid but, you asked it in a profoundly stupid way.

Depends on your PoV i guess.

Id argue that 1942 would have been worse... maybe his memory is going...

Or maybe hes making the same mistake I pointed out that most people make. You cant let your politics affect your decision making as a soldier. Politics is for politicians and people that want to be politicians. He doesnt agree with his governments strategy, so its a bad time to join. If he agreed it would be a good time to join.

Trains of thought like that are a luxury the professional soldier cant afford.

I'm curious as to why this would be the worst time to join. I can think of many other times that it would be much much worse to join, ie: WWI, WWII, and Vietnam just to name a few. Now honestly, the amount of deaths so far in the past 4 years or so is ~2300 people. Many more injured but that just comes with the territory. This amount is a very small amount even compared to the war in Vietnam.

Now I have been asked this question numerous times in the past few months, "How could you possibly kill someone?" To answer this question, I simply state "If my pulling the trigger not only saves my life but maybe a few other soldier's lives I have no problem doing so."

Also, as I previously stated I do not fully support some of the reasons behind this war, but I do support my country. Not only am I doing this to support my country, but to better myself as a person. I am looking forward to the whole experience, learning a bit more about how much I can push myself. Which i just do not see myself doing if I stay at home.

I know basic training will be tough at times, I have heard that the first two weeks or so are very hard on one mentally. I expect in that first two weeks there will be times where I will ask myself "why am I here?" and "i just want to go home," but I am strong enough both physically and mentally to get through it. Plus I have the 'ol North Dakota work eithic lol. Yeah that's right im from the stix image

Again, thank you for all the support, you guys are awesome.

Army BT is nothing, basic physical ability. You'll have to do 100 sit-ups in 2 minutes, 60 push-ups, run a 5-6 minute mile, do 20 pull-ups. That's about it. You'll take a bunch of bull-shit, but physical ability is in the background.

Now the Marines on the other hand...My brother called home crying whenever he could use the phone. Now he is a hard-ass, but is that a good thing? I'm not sure. Marines changed him though.

But apparently there is a big lack of respect for the army in Iraq, so when Marines call you a meatshield don't take it personally, you're both fighting for the same cause.
