Hello
I am just giving Guild Wars a try now and was interested in making a Ranger. I understand you can pick a second profession but do you really need 1 and if so whats a secondary profession that compliments the ranger.
Any input is greatlt appreciated.
Thanks
Bliss

In the beginning, you can try out the 5 different professions as a secondary to see which one you like. They give you an option to take the profession or move along. You can always go back to the profession and take the option as a 2nd profession.
Monk is good because of the healing ability. Warrior is good for the benefits of the close combat. Elementalist is foe dealing more damage (but you'll be using alot of mana). Mesmer will allow you to reduce your target's armor and abilities. Necro will let you make an undead army with what you just killed.
Best bet to so try everything. You don't have to have a 2nd but it does help and you will get more missions. (there are profession based missions in the game)
Hey Bliss, Ranger was my first profession as well. As the post above me stated, there are benefits to each of the secondary classes although he was slightly mistaken when he said that you do not need a secondary. You do need to pick a secondary class, however, it is not necessary that you put skills in your skill bar from that class...effectively eliminating approx 150 skill options.
The Ranger's skill set is very effective in and of itself, and there are builds I used with nothing but Ranger skills. Everything does hinge on your playing style of course as to what style you ultimately should choose. I prefered the ranged aspect of combat, so my first character was a Ranger/Elementalist which I eventually changed later in the game to a Ranger/Mesmer. And that would be my recomendation to you. Playing a Ranger/Mesmer gives you many options for both PvE and PVP... Damage, Degen or Interupt builds.
Try it out have some fun...

It depends entirely on they type of ranger you want to play. Any combo is viable, but some are better than others for certain tasks. You need to watch what other people play and experiment on your own.

My first character was an R/E. Got him ascended that way then changed him to an R/Mo. I pretty much roll /Mo on all my characters because of the unlimited res capability offered to Monks, especially rebirth for advanced and ascension missions.
I have 14 aps on wilderness survival, 12 aps on marksmanship, and 10 aps on expertise (never run out of energy). My skill bar currently looks like this:
1. Choking Gas
2. Ignite Arrows
3. Poison Arrows
4. Dust Trap
5. Flame Trap/Lightning Reflexes*
6. Storm Chaser
7. Troll Unguent
8. Resurrect/Rebirth (depending on mission).
Using this combo, I was able to solo defeat a level 28 Fire Drake boss on Ring of Fire after rest of team had been wiped. The fight took 10 minutes, but I beat him (when I beat him, I actually had Lightning Reflexes loaded, which enabled me to set Dust Trap without interruption). BTW, 14 aps on wilderness survival gives me +10 health regen on Troll Unguent, which is one better than my Monk had with 16 aps on Healing with Healing Breeze.
Choking Gas interrupted his fire spells, Lightning Reflexes allowed me to set Dust Trap which interrupted his melee (blinded him) while I loaded Poison Arrows to degen his health. Then I reset Choking Gas, hit Troll Unguent to keep my health high, then reset Dust Trap, etc. It was epic, and even the warrior who watched was amazed by what a well-equipped Ranger could do.
I've never soloed any other high level boss with any other character. Rangers have a special place in my heart.
P.S. One important caveat about one of the largest Ranger skill-sets, Beast Mastery: having a pet is cool and pretty helpful at lower levels of game. As things get tougher, though, having a pet can be a liability if you don't fully commit aps to Beast Mastery at the expense of other, more useful skills. Why?
When a pet dies, all your skills reset and need to recharge. When you res said pet, all your skills reset and need to recharge. One of the worst combos for a Ranger specializing in Beast Mastery is having an Elementalist secondary. Pet dies = no skills for 8 seconds. If you're a caster, that's an eternity without the ability to cast attacks.
My pet was retired when he hit level 20. YMMV.
I like monk secondary for hex and blind removals. Being blinded or having spirit shakles on you makes you practically useless. The current popular build now is the ranger spike, mainly for mantra of resolve to keep you from being inturupted. There's still a lot of nice builds from other professions as well; touch rangers (necro), illusion weapon (mesmer), hammer ranger (warrior) and a shit load more that I have yet to try out.
yup, he is paying for a game with quality that has content for Months. guild wars on the other hand is a game that hardly has content for over 2 weeks worth.
