[POLL] Do you think pvp would make this game bigger?

SendenSenden Member UncommonPosts: 602

This is probably debated a million times over but hey, i thought i would make a poll and see what everyone thinks. Also i come as both a fan of all of Tolkien's work and a fan of pvp games so i will seem somewhat biased towards this with my opinions.

This game was mentioned and in the works for a few years now i believe? But i remember hearing about a year ago how this game will not feature any pvp of any kind and well, i totally stopped my interest in this both as a WoW fanatic and a Tolkien fan.

This is mainly because, i love pvp and i love LOTRs but i feel that any "smart" developer would have used the success with WoW as a selling point for the game and feature a very similar system to this and somewhat be a WoW clone set in middle earth.  Basically, have the two factions thing where you can be the armies of Mordor, or be apart of the alliance between Humans/Dwarfs/Hobbits/Elves. This would have worked easily if they set this say in the middle of The Two Towers. They could have based this upon war which is the whole point of Tolkien's work and as it stands, PvE just isn't the middle earth universe but i suppose The Hobbit was kind of centred on this.

Now we all know this isn't going to happend and Turbine for whatever reason, wants to concentrate on the pve aspect of the game. How do you honestly think this will effect sales of the game?

I also hear rumours that they are adding pvp in an expansion but even if that did happend, it just wouldn't be the same especially as the game is designed with pve in mind. I honestly think that if Turbine did originally have a pvp game in mind, everywhere would be buzzing with information on this game and it could have easily been a WoW beater considering the amount of Tolkien fans far exceeds the amount of Warcraft fans.

Yes It would help the sales, so I voted yes to your question. However I for one would rather see this as a pve only game. I played EQ and WoW on pvp servers. For a long time I have loved pvp but it has got stale in this next generation of mmorpgs. It seems to me that new mmorpgs should be either pvp or pve not both. For instance WoW has made the focal point of many patches centered around pvp, in effect these patches ended up ruining the game for people who like the traditional style of pvp and not repetitive pvp zones. Also many new mmo have added rewards for doing lots of pvp, while this may sound nice at first IT'S NOT! It is simply a way to give noobs who dont know **** about team games the ability to pimp themselves with pvp gear. My point is if I wanted to play pvp i'd go to wow or Guild Wars, however I am looking for a good mmo with lots of questing and fun areas to go with a team of like minded players. I think pvp would only take away from this game.

I also believe that PvP combat will definitely sell Lord of the Rings: Shadows of Angmar without a doubt. But many fans of PvP combat are coming from games with static storylines where the conflict will always be between realms or factions(World of Warcraft and SWG for instance). You said that the game should take place during the Two Towers. In fact players we will experience the Two Towers as the story arc continues, but right now Shadows of Angmar will heavily indulge itself in the first book. Turbine plans to release each book within the triology through expansions; the quest and live events will progress the storyline from one book to another. So in the end what happens to Sauron's force? Now we all know the end result of the storyline, but Turbine Studios wants us to experience it through the eyes of those who believe that there some good still left in the world and it's worth fighting for; which that is the ultimate theme of the LOTR franchise.

In other words, telling new stories based on the one we love, i just don't think this is much fun, it will be different but to me, it won't enhance my LOTR experience playing it through this bunch of people's views and i think it will ruin it.

I liked the original middle earth online idea myself, life in middle earth, eventhough i never truly heard much about it but a nice open ended game like that would be a perfect setting. I've read the books and watched the film, i don't want to see the story retold again in form of Turbine's take on it.

I belive PVP would hurt the game more then help the game. We see the story thur the eyes of the freed peoples of middle earth.  Pvp would just be people going out and killing each other.  To me this is not lord of the rings.  yes there were huge battles and fights but it was the story and world that made lord of the rings.  THe exploring of the world that was made around the story. SO i think the game will be better off with just pve and a rich story that takes u thur the story of the books and gives u a feeling of what middle earth feels like.  I dont think it would make it feel like middle earth if u were out in the middle of the elf forest picking furit and a single orc out of no where jumps out of no where and kills me.  Now if i was in the middle of a orc forest picking fruit i could see this.  Players that like pvp would do things kinda thing all the time.  Pick on lower lv players and just hunt them down and kill them.  THat is not lord of the rings.

I am pretty sure they will be adding pvp in at a later date... Might be interesting.

Retirement is just an excuse for a more devilish plan!

There is no point in me playing this if there is limited PVP.  Once I've done every quest and killed every MOB, its gonna get boring fast.  The last great challenge is that interaction with someone from another state or country.  Thats why I play.  To compete against a real life person and test my tactics and skills.  Sorry but I'm done with PVE for now.  I just need more than just creatures to kill.

PvP is a really important aspect of a game for me, but i have to say i understand them for leaving it out. Unless you made orcs, trolls, etc playable races, PvP makes no sense whatsoever.

Middle Earth is tricky since so much is set in stone, especially during this period. Making an mmorpg about it is a no-win situation:

    1. Let the players interact to much with the world and you might as well rename because it's going to be nothing like LOTR.

    2. Let them interact to little and you've got a boring, static game you could've enjoyed just as much offline.

Turbine might surprise me and find some kind of a balance, but so far it seems they're going hardcore with option nr 2.
