A nine year necro-thread, and the conversation has not changed at all.

Talk about "Wrath of the Liche King"...

Well seeing as i have met no one ever who liked doing the same thing over and over again in a game, with the exception of toddlers playing with toys, i would say that based on your own logic most people are going to get bored of wow... I wholly agree with you then.

Haha, what? Half the bloody games on the market are about repeating the same thing over and over again. And with MMOs it's close to 100%. Skinner box is the core design.

I'd say failed miserably at taking advantage of, but I don't think they really tried. That simply isn't the game to provide games for the particular kind of gamers...

    My perception:

    What WoW is:

    • A game with cute, polished graphics
    • A game with moderate specs (because the cute graphics aren't so tough to run)
    • A game with simple and safe gameplay, play at ease
    • A game with a nice, preset, quest-driven storyline
    • A moneymaker (most likely)

    What WoW is not:

    • A longterm game
    • A roleplaying game - or at least, the roles are crippled, incomplete and generic
    • An immersive game - the behaviour accepted / encouraged (on purpose/through mechanics) doesn't make the world seem alive or real.

If you feel like playing through a story where you're quite simply the hero, much like in the single player RPGs, then WoW might keep you happy, and even positively entertained for a while. If you enjoy the feeling of controlling unchecked power, blasting bosses off the face of the planet, WoW can be quite satisfying.

If you want a game where you can stand out among the players by being better, WoW is either not going to be played by you, or it is going to let you down. If you want a role that means something to someone, not even a roleplay server is going to save you on WoW. If you try to stick with WoW for extended periods of time, you might feel any pleasure you used to derive from this gameplay going right down the drain.

    These are not absolutes.

But WoW does have a value. To some. And those who tried to do something are the only ones who can say they have achieved success or not. If generating cash was their purpose, they are a success. If drawing a huge crowd was their purpose - likewise.

If creating a rich and dynamic world was their purpose, and if they wanted to cater to roleplayers that crave depth and purpose to their characters, they have failed so much more than miserably. It would transcend failure and be beyond my belief. But I don't think they did try to do this. If you told me they did, I still wouldn't believe it.

I mean it when I say that is beyond my belief.

Most likely, they are a success.

Great post.  "WoW is not a long term game." That couldn't be more true. The game lacks a lot of depth. I had decent fun with the WoD expansion for about 2 months. After that the game got really stale. When you hit max level all you really have is PVE and/or PVP. To me both isn't as interesting because it's the same grind over and over again. Very monotonous. Then after a while garrison missions are like a chore. That is what WoW is. It's a chore. It's not a role playing game, it's not an immersive game. It's a lobby game where I can do chores. On the other side of the spectrum you can level alts. But you can get that done in a week if that. I for one can only tolerate the mage class on the game.

WoW is the best game to cater to the non traditional casual mmo player. It does have value in that.

I wonder what people mean by "Crap endgame". its not very diffrent from other games.

WoW's end game is very bland. But at least they have an end game. I still like vertical progression. Gw2 while a decent game has horizontal end game progression which is really no end game at all. I much prefer a game with end game content.

Of course it got some troubles with a new expansion. But after a year long break I still like that. Still my top 5 of mmos.

My belief is someone was getting tired of all the H1Z1 hate threads and dug up a tried and true troll topic guaranteed to draw in the haters.

Sadly, there's more fun in attacking that which appears to be circling the toilet bowl already than to attack something that you know isn't going to die anytime soon.

So back to H1Z1 hating they will go.

+1 for the attempt, -5 in execution.

I agree, and I think that's entirely intentional since the landscape of MMOs has changed so much. Personally, I sub for probably 6-8 months of the year. The rest of the time I'm off playing other games or I've got my sub somewhere else. Blizz understands you've got other games to play and I think that they want to give you that time. Actually, they want you to play games in their own portfolio.

Graphics are a matter of aesthetic opinion.  I personally don't hate the graphics.  That being said, yes, the game isn't as fun as it used to be.  But what do you expect?  Without some major mechanic overhaul, the game is still the same ole "go to this quest hub.  gather this, kill that" grind that it has always been.

The only thing good is the garrison, and even that could have been done a different way.

    Lol, necro thread.

Pretty fun to go back to the beginning of it (early Feb 2006). I first started WoW in January of 06' so its interesting to read. Some of the same arguments and complaints we still hear. I believe it was still Vanilla WoW in early 06 too (BC launched in January of 07').

    Good stuff.
