Can someone explain to me the death penalty of Eve Online and rank it to other games you play.

How many hours of gameplay would it take to earn the money to replace your ship?

Depends on what ship you lost.

An AF takes me about an hour and a half to work back. A hac would take around 14 hours or so.

Don't forget the cost of any implants you may have on your person.

Dont forget that if you die and dont have a clone you lose ALL of your skills.  So if you dont keep your clones up to date you are really screwed. :)

Well, the first stage of death, is your ship you are in being blown up, upon that moment, you eject from the ship in a capsule which is fully controllable, and if you're responsive enough, you can escape true death. As your character gains more skill points, you will need to upgrade your clones to store all of these skill points, the more skill points your character has, the more expensive the clone to store these skill points. If the capsule you were in is killed, you die, and you respawn as your last clone purchased. If your character had 3,000,000 skill points, and the last clone you purchased could only store 2,000,000 skillpoints, then you randomly lose 1,000,000 skill points, so there's no knowing what skills you could lose. You can insure your ship, but it's not a 100% full payout insurance, there are different types of insurances for your ship, and price varies depending on how much coverage you want. This insurance does not cover any weapons or modules installed in your ship, but when your ship is destroyed, some of these weapons or modules may survive the blast, and are stored in a can, which the killer could take for himself. Basically, I rarely go below 0.5 security systems, my character is almost 2 years old, and I haven't died a single death, but neither have I participated in PVP, except close scrapes when a pirate tries to kill me should I stumble across his path in lower security systems. If you want to play it safe, only go to 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 security systems, where police will intervene and destroy anyone who should attack you, anything below 0.4, and it's a risk you should be willing to take.

Ministry of Misinformation? Yeah, I found your agent.

If you die without an up to date clone, or even a basic clone, you only lose a percentage of your highest rank skill. The maximum you can lose is like 500K sp.

Thats right, even if your clone doesn't cover all your skill points, you don't loose everything, or even close to everything.  I know first hand, I had Caldari BS to lvl 5, and was podkilled.  Lost 500K in Caldari BS and was knocked down to level 4.  This can be severe enough, at the time Adv. learning skills weren't out, and took a few weeks to train that skill back to lvl 5.  But, I had a basic clone at the time and probably around 14mil skillpoints.  Even though the basic clone doesn't cover many skill points, I did not loose relatively many skill points.

Don't let it scare you. The death penalty is awsome because it makes you afraid to die therefore you don't want to die which finally leads to a more fullfilling gaming experience. You actually have a reason to stay alive. (unless you're in a corp like mine then they just give you 5 times what you lost ::::02::)

Sorry if I was wrong about the Clone.  I have played EVE for about 6 months and that was the impression I got.

    Thanks for the correction.

The worst thing for me when killed isnt the ship destroyed, neither the implants (i dont use them) nor the money for the next clone. Its the time to get a new ship, fitt it again, and all that shit.::::16::

That's why the golden rule in low-sec space and 0.0 space is "DON'T FLY WHAT YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE". Actually, tht rule also applies to any combat missions and rat hunting in astroid belts in Empire space.

Additional rule-of-thumbs you might hear from the community are:

    1. Don't fly any ship into PvP which you can't replace 5 times over.
    2. Never undock from a station without fully insuring your ship.
    3. Never ever use your money-making ship in PvP.
    4. Never ever undock without a full clone....get a loan, beg, steal, sell you first born, or whatever but never leave the safety of a station without a proper clone since accidents can and have happened in Empire space.

Since I've been on I've lost only a few ships (and not podded so far luckily enough).  Alot of losing a ship depends on what you do but theres no feeling like the one you get when someone you dont know flies into your area.  This game really makes you paranoid.  And dont be too scared about seeing player pirates in high sec (yellow on the name and usually a skull marking that he's got a bounty).  I see alot of them by gates in .7 and up but they cant really do anything unless they want to get blown away by concord.  Only worry when your in low sec.

And since I've started I can proudly say I've blown up another players ship.  It was nothing big though, he was a noob that shot my ratcans that I was collecting making him flash red so I destroyed his ship (but didn't pod) for compensation.  I've also have lost maybe about 4 ships to ore thieves and player rats but have been lucky enough to get outimage

Not true. I believe generally you lose 5% of SP not covered by your clone policy. Certainly no more and 500k maximum sounds about right (never heard of anyone losing more than that).

I find the biggest loss is either implants or named/T2 modules, since even if your ship is uninsured you get 40% of its base value back (sux if you have a HAC though).

I've found that you will generally loose a skill level from one of your highest skills - up to the amount not covered by a clone.

so if you have a number of lvl5 skills, and get podded without a clone, the most you will loose is one point - one of those skills will go to lvl4.

considering this can be anywhere up to 20 days of training, and may make you unable to fly some top level ships anymore... its bad..

for a noobie, getting podded REALLY doesn't hurt.

Advice: go out and get podded a few times as soon as you can - get over the worry of it and then just enjoy the game.

With Titans, +5 Implants, faction stuff, t2 BPOs in cargo its perfectly possible to lose so much stuff that you will never ever be able to replace it even if all you do is play eve for the rest of your life.
