Death Penalty and Other Harsh Issues?

I haven't played in some years but I don't think the death system has changed.

There is no XP loss when you die.

The only way you could potentially lose an item is if you are killed in PvP or die in a place where your corpse can't be recovered. 99% of the time it can be recovered.

Everytime you die you leave a corpse on the ground and then you spawn back to your chosen lifestone (resurrection point). On your corpse a certain number of your highest currency valued items are left behind. You have to run back to your corpse and pick the items back up. You are the only one who can loot your corpse unless you are killed in PvP (then the person who killed you can loot your body) or actually give permission (via a / command) to someone else.

There is a way to cheat the system though. Players carry around "death items," which are light weight but very high priced items. Unlike other games, just because something is worth a lot to sell at a vendor, doesn't mean it is actually valuable to a player. There are a lot of highly priced junk items like jewelry that players carry around for the sole purpose of losing on death. Players usually carry enough death items to die 3 or 4 times in a row without ever recovering their previous death items. At some point though you will probably be over your head and lose all your death items and will start dropping your armor. That's when you ask for help from other players.

There is PvP. It's a bit complicated and changed a little since I last played, so I'll let someone else take that one.

Jaguar pretty much summed it up. I think the only thing to add is that you only started dropping stuff at level 5 or so (it was a certain level which allowed you to become accustomed to the penalty of death I think before the levels of reprieve were used up). The higher the level you become, the more valuable the stuff is and the greater quantity it is that you drop. I remember dropping my sweet tinkered armor and never really recovering it.

Anyone who's played on DT can remember getting killed and having people take their valuables that they might've worked hard for (except on DT a lot of people carry around Bound Quest Items so they don't drop when they die). I carried around a note sometimes with a taunt on it, so whenever someone would kill me (I didn't carry a lot of valuable things) the note might drop and someone would read the insult, etc.

When you die you get Vitae Penalty (vp) which isn't a loss of experience, but rather a temporary deduction of attributes and skills. The greatest VP anyone can have (if I remember correctly) varries from level to level but the highest is 49% I think. It takes experience to work off the vitae penalty, but you can still assign that experience directly to your attributes and skills.

There are some basic commands that can help you locate your body if you forgot where you were when you died. This doesn't help in dungeons because dungeons, caves, etc have no coordinates as I remember. The command is something like: /corpse or @corpse. Then you just run to the coordinates of your body (only tells the coordinates of the body of your last death). Your corpse will also not show up on the radar so it would be good to use one of the Search Keys on the keyboard to search through piles of corpses or just when you're running around in the wilderness around the coordinates of your body.

In the old days, they didn't have /corpse and typing /lifestone only killed you (gave you vp and the whole works) and then brought you to the lifestone. They also didn't have the /permit <player> @permit <player> command either so you had to retrieve your own items. I remember my brother just receiving a full suit of shining red yoroi armor (I think it was) and red gaunts/sollies and then getting killed somewhere in a mountainous region up north or south. I don't believe he could type /corpse and he didn't remember where exactly he died. He lost that armor (or most of it). Happened a lot back then, but we both usually found better stuff as time would reveal. We had to wait it out sometimes, though, with mismatched leather, plate, chain, or celdon.

Well, one paragraph ago was about the extent of my wisdom. Hope it helps.

PvP is optional. There are two versions of PvP you can do, PK and PK Lite. If you choose to play in PK mode you will drop items and the person that killed you can take your loot. Likewise if you kill anyone you can take their items. In PK Lite you don't drop any items and you can't loot anyone. PK's and PK Lite's cannot fight each other, you have to be in the same mode.

As for the objectives of PvP, I'm not sure. When I played the only thing to do was kill each other for fun and there were a few events that players needed to turn PK for. I believe now there are "arenas" for fighting, but I don't know the details. Also with the expansion I remember reading something about territories being added to for players fight over, but again I don't know if that turned out or how it works.

The PvP takes some skill too. Your spells, arrows, and melee attacks don't automatically hit the target everytime like in WoW. People can dodge around to avoid being hit. Also unlike WoW you can't fire through the landscape or objects. If a spell or projectile hits a hill or a wall, it stops.

You probably won't be PvP'ing soon though since you would get owned because everyone is a high level, which is expected of an old game.

    1. I have limited play time (evening after work) and I noticed the death penalty was harsh (by my standards). What is the current death penalty? Exp loss is fine and all that but what scares me is item loss or the potential to lose somehting for good that I worked really hard for.
The death penalty is called "Vitae" in AC each death will net you a 5% reduction in your current skills & you drop a certain ammount of items. And depending on your level is the ammount of item's you drop & how much XP it takes to remove the vitae penalty. At my current level of 229 I drop 14 items on death & to lose 1 point of vitae cost around 1,500,000. As someone else posted most players gather high priced low burden items and use them as "Death Item's" these DI's drop and your current eqp'd weapons & armor are safe. 99% of players go back and recover their corpes. I hate losing anything. In my 6 years of playing I have only left 1 body unrecovered and that was due to the quest we were on was a gem (hard to get) portal to the dungeon and, the dungeon portal could not be summoned or recalled too.
    2. PVP - Does it exist and what is it like?
Yes 2 forms PK (red) you lose items and get a small amount of XP per kill. PKLite (pink) you die you lose any enchantments cast on you, No XP per kill. From what I read and hear in game (IG) AC has one of the best PK systems in the MMO realm. I don't PK because I suck. I have to look at the keyboard to type image
    3. Do you think I would like AC? I cut my teeth on DAOC and to this day its my fav. I like to explore and see new stuff most of all and after that I like a tight-knit community. I like depth and substance.
Yes, I think you would! Only thing you can do is try it. I came to AC from Blizzard games. That was 6 years ago. AC is the most solo friendly game I have ever played. A very limited number of things in AC require forced grouping. AC does have forced gruping quest but it may consist of 10% of the games content. Most players are great people but like all MMO's you have your "t00ls" that you run across, However they are far & few in between.
    4. What do you need to start playing? Can you download it from their website and if so what is recommened to get?
AC:ToD CD & a valid credit Card. Turbine has posted that they finally have worked things out with Sony and AC:ToD download keys will be availlable soon but, as of right now I can't give you a date as to when the D/L's will be ready.
I would appreciate any advice/thoughts you all might have!
