Preordering Dark & Light is like...

infra172infra172 Member UncommonPosts: 145

Sure, Dark & Light has been a tremendous failure these past few years with no hope of recovering.  But I think its about time we lightened things up.  Play this game.  It'll be cathartic.

I'll start:

Preordering Dark & Light is like...

... purchasing on a ticket for the Titanic and requesting a room with a good view of the iceberg.

... buying stock from Ken Lay.

... setting up a season ticket on Tivo for a show starring Gena Davis.

... a cow applying for an internship at a slaughterhouse.

---a day at the spa before your mud wrestling performance

perhaps not but were they not charging people 60 dollars for a guaranteed beta/SoG spot in November for pre ordering DnL? Anyway if one believes  the beta leaks SoG= DnL

how about preordering DnL is like performing a vasectomy on yourself with a chainsaw

edit- seems as if that is what NP3 did to themselves when they released SoG. Man those forums are dead as hell over there anymore.

nobody has said it has actually "failed" yet....

bet we could get the sog/dnl devs and mods oh! and fanbois too tho to get us some good workarounds for different words.

Hehe, yeah its getting real old.

Funny thing is I´ve read exact the same threads on WWII online launch and Anarchy Online. Somehow they still succeeded.
There are many opinions about DNL, some hate it, some love it.

I dont understand how anybody can take either extreme sides.

Compared to the 400- 500 that were there on a Saturday 3 months ago it is dead as hell. I have not seen it break 100 in weeks now. Also how many people are posting and how many are just morbid corpse kickers such as myself.

The AO and WWII Online comparisons are not good ones. Both were unique in their settings, that is a sci fi world and WWII warfare. DnL is just a very very bad EQ ripoff with dragons and snow boarding. Other than than the various mounts and the long draw distance, whatever else that is in DnL/SoG you can get better in a dozen other MMORPG's.

Watching the DNL forums  is like watching a friend in the hospital dying of a slow spreading cancer.

Apologies for turning a light hearted thread into a morbid one.

  • Well I tried to like it, tried to give it a fair shake but no longer into it. Many more out there and in better shape.

Would have to agree with many posts at this site. Its nice to see opinions and statements that are flamed by rude diehard fans.

Preordering DNL is like...well...like preordering a train wreck with incompetent clean up crew

Even up to early January there were 100-200 just on the general part of the English forums. Thats when it started it 's downward spiral really. Right after launch it dropped dramatically from an average of 300-400 down to 100-200.  Lately it was down sometimes to where there were more mods than members online a lot. Sometimes as many guests as members. Now it seems to have leveled off and even risen slightly with last weeks events. It will probably fall again now since the live events turned out to be just another fiasco. Oh well at least AD tried, too bad the dtaa base code is such crap.

At launch day and for a few days after there was almost always over a thousand people logged on to the english genral forums.  It was not until about a week later that number dipped below 600 then a few days later 400.  I even made a post awhile back about the number dropping below 400 which I believe happened just after the 1 week extra downtime.  Slowly everyday that number has gotten smaller to its present 25-75 people usually of which half are guests.

What would be nice is if the client would show how many are logged on either by doing a /who all in game or at the login screen.  Even Mourning had the technolgy to do that.  But maybe Mournings experience is why they do not do that.  I never saw Mourning have more than 10 on at onace but I did see posts where people climed to they saw 30 logged in at once.  I have no idea how many are left playing SoG out of the 20k plus that started (9k pioneers, 10k free and 5k relocated beta testers) but I would be shocked if its more than 200 most likely a 100 at best.

The real question is when is the last day.  When will they shut the power off on this fiasco.  When will they just give up.  It seems obvious to pretty much anyone who has played or followed this game that it will fold before release.  The question is when?  Will  they try to cut their losses by selling more pre-orders?    Will they close down and come back to cash in on a few more gullible people sometime later after many have forgotten?  My guess since the 1st day of SoG was Febraury-March for the games closure.  We are there now and the devs still seem inclined to fleece more people.  Not closing the game should mean a new round of creative excuses for delaying launch in April.  The fun never stops.   I can't recall any game company being this entertaining or any games death being this interesting.

    Hi,

IMO its not untypical that at launch thousands log in the forums and then after weeks it drops.  Its not a good benchmark.

Ingame I´ve noticed a slight player drop but not as bad as in SWG.

In the end if DNL survives itll be good in 8-10 months until then other competitors will be on the market however.  Though as long it is free its average, IMO.  I wouldnt see it "uber" like some do but I wouldnt see it as the epidome of the devil as does some people here, lol.

The problem with 8-10 months is this game has been in beta now for almost 3 years and nothing has been accomplished.  There is absolutely no content and the game is mroe unstable than any game I have ever tested and that includes almost a year of testing Shadowbane and 6 months of beta testing AO.  If a competent dev team came in maybe they could get a limited game released in 1-2 years.  But that would require them building the game form the ground up and releasing a barely playable game with almost no content. Give the current dev team 5-10 years and maybe they could release a limited game.

Look what needs to be done its overwhelming.  There is a world, a beuatiful world, but nothing else.  Whats in the game needs redoing.  The devs have acknowledged the combat system is awful and have promised to totally redo it.  Although they recently back pedalded from that statement.  The UI also needs to redone.  The rest of the game needs to be built.   Towns need to be added, mob camps and at least outdoor dungeons, npcs, quests, weather effects, some mob A1, character animations, resources, harvesting, crafting,  and so so much more.  Class skills then need to be added then fleshed out and evntually balanced.  They would then need a beta that would run 7 days a week for 12-18 months to test the game rather than the present 1-2 days a week of uptime.

The amount of work that needs to be done and the lack of work that has been done is mindboggling.  What exactly have they been doing for the roughly 6 years of development and almost 3 years of beta.  They have accomplished almost nothing.  They didn't even build the world themselves. I saw the devs recent post where they said they hired two fanboys to become devs.  Are all the devs being paid minimum wage.  Is there anyone there with any MMO expereince.

Completing the content aspect is all assuming they have solved their stability problems.  After almost 3 years of beta people can barely log in, peoples characters get perma-bugged and they can barely keep the servers up.  How long will it take them just to get the game semi-stable.  Three more months, 6 months, 3 more year or never?

I hate to disagree with you or burst your bubble but there is now way this game will release in any shape or form in 8-10 months.  There is just to much to do.  If you have the followed  the game as long as I have you might recall the hype about DnL's 1st release date scheduled for December 2002.   The devs were adamant that the game would release and so were the fanboys.  At the last minute they delayed it.  Well its 3 years and 3 months later and the Devs don't appear to have made any progress since except they still have a story and their sticking to it.

"The problem with 8-10 months is this game has been in beta now for almost 3 years and nothing has been accomplished. "

Although many important things are missing such as quests and crafting, the above statement is exaggerated, e.g. mounts, structure building.

  • ZippyZippy Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,412

I really wish I had been exaggerating.  There are a few gadgets in the game like mounts, flight simulator, and you a few poorly done basic looking buildings.  Good to try once.  In WoW I loved the gryphon the first time I rode it.  After that I could not wait to get off it.  Gadgets wear off fast.   There is no content in the game its a graphical chat room for the gullible right now, not a game.  I have never ever seen any game at any stage of development beta or alpha with less content.  Other failed games like Shadowbane,  Horizons, and AO wwere so much more advanced 6months to a year before release than where SoG is right now.

Whats even more amazing is that this is all they have done in almost 3 years of beta testing.  All it is now is a concept at best not a game.  Add in the stability problems and we are 5+ years from a release.  The amount that needs to be done is just overwhleming even for an expereinced and competent dev team which unfortunatley we don't have.

ayup, gotta agree. I mean, read back over the Review after 3 weeks (a month ago) thread here and NOTHING HAS CHANGED! Coming up on 2 months since they set it up and nothing has changed. They got what? 3 months left? Mayhaps with a couple of them LEARNING the workings of the engine itself it will work smoother, however, learning does take time ..and practice..8-10 more months may get them with a little more working knowledge but doubt it.
