I was just on the forums and thought I'd check out this game. I am currently downloading the trial but I was wondering what the game is like.
What is the combat like? I read that the game is boring( I'll try it out first). Is that just at lower lvls or throghout the entire game?
I am an ex-SWG player. Is there anything common?
Is it an all out grind( I unlocked my jedi in almost a year, I don't want to ever go through anything like that again)?
Like I said, I am downloading the trial, but is there alot of stuff you don't get to check out till higher lvls?

Well, if the game is boring through out the entire game, no one would play it! :P
To answer your questions.
Combat:
Combat in EVE is not twitch based, at the most basic level, it's targeting your enemy and activating your weapons and keeping an eye on his and your damage.
But on a deeper level, combat is about keeping your enemy in you optimal fire range. This is more based on how your ship is equipped. Different guns have different optimal ranges, tracking speeds, ammo can alter optimals and damage and even capcitor use. Different mods (like the Gyrostabilzer and tracking enhancer) can mess with gun attributes. Then you have 4 kinds of damage, which can exploit a weakness in the enemies shielding/armor if you pick the right type of ammo. You can drones to supplant yoru firepower. Also, relative traversal velocity plays a part in whether you hit the guy or not (ie, its easier to hit if you're charging straight at him).
The other side of the coin, defense, it similiar.
Plus, there are fleet considerations, all that above plays a part, but you can become a integral part of a fleet battle (as a tackler, jamming, target painter, anti frig, anti support, or ship of the line).
So combat in EVE can be pretty exciting, but it's also risky. since you can lose your ship/mods, and clone, but there are some safe guards, like insurance and having a good clone.
EVE is a love it or hate it game, some find it boring as hell (the only real dig you will have is the travel times). The key, IMHO, is to get in a corp right away, so that can give you direction and a support structure to help you learn the rather steep learning curve of this game. But the politics, the combat, it can be very exhilarating.
Since skill training is time based, there is no grind there, but the only real "grind" is for isk. But there are many ways to make isk. Mining, rat hunting, missions (ONLY DO KILL MISSIONS, from sercurity/internal security/surrvailence agents), building, research, trading. You have to find your niche.
I'm not a SWG player, so can't comment on that.
Have fun in EVE, convo me "Creed Richards" if you want to chat as for assistance.
Hiya, welcome to Eve.
best way to think of eve combat - you are the captain of a large ship (smallest is the size of a boing 747, up to multiple kilometres long). You are giving commands to your crew through an interface (the screen etc).
You dont actually pilot the ship, or fire the guns - but you are giving general orders as to when to do various things - like approach, fly on vector, warp to location, stay at range, fire guns, boost shields etc.
The only "grind" in the game is getting isk (the in game money) which is used for buying skills, ships, everything. Learning skills is just a case of having the right skillbooks and some time. But if you are in it for the combat, then its very fast to get in the game in a small frigate (like a punisher or rifter, most you will be spending of 300-500k isk for a fully outfitted ship - and they are still very effective for a long long time - and fast/fun to fly as well.)
What time zone are you in?
If you have more questions, give me a yell in-game. I'm more than happy to talk about combat (my favorite topic). Send an eve.mail to "Varis" - and take a look at My New Corp which is just a bunch o' friends, newbies and new characters having fun.
