O.k a liitle background. I have only played one MMO that was COH/COV as of today i decided I will NOT renew. I will purchase a new game tomorrow. But here are my questions: If you can help it is much appreciated. I spend alot fo time on these games and don't wish to buy one i dislike.
1) coming from COH/COV; what is best ease of gameplay like do i have to "mine" for metal like in WoW?
2) If i have a mount or a "pet" like in Wow do I have to feed it?
3) I am not a big fan of PvP. But love to team and solo by myself at times. PVP for me is rare but occasional. Which is best server for me co-op?
4)Grind, grind, Grind.... Is there a ton of grind in this game to just "go lvl"?
5) the Games i am considering at this moment in this order A) D&D online B)DAoC C) WoW which do you think is best?
6)for a newbie player to this MMO; Are the veteran players "happy to help"? meaning show us the ropes?
I have read the F.A.Q's and ot alot of opinion but i am still not sure. i really got lost with all the acronyms lol RvR, ToA (i know what that is but dont understand it yet) and B...something or another.
Hey gang i am new to MMORPG.com also i have only came here for info about COH/COV recently but never hung out great website.
In advance thank you all for any and all help provided. Please help me make this decision easy.
remember no mining or feeding myself. i want to run misisons, socialize, hunt, follow "story arcs"
p.s I am 30 yrs old, and my brother will be conveeting from COH/COV also he is 37, playing with alot of 12 yr olds like i saw on WoW and COH/V is that the same here?
thanks again wow long post!

sorry i just figured out I MAKE the POLL please excuse that poll mess underneath my post LOL i am new forgive me LOL
Wow I have a hard decision ahead of me.
SURGE
Well if your not a fan of PVP then it sounds to me this game wont offer you much.
EQ games are the kings of PVE tbh.
---------------------------------------------
Don't click here...no2
And again disregard that last POLL ALSO because i forgot to put DAoC in there .
See I have not played a MMO for 2 Days I am going nutz help me!!!
You will love DAoC. It's just about perfect in every way, with amazing devs who do what players want. The graphics are amazing, gameplay is solid and has arguably the best Fantasy PVP in any MMORPG right now.
EQ2 is also an amazing title, but you will need a quite nice computer.
great info anarchyart thank you VERY much. those were the kind of responses i was looking for. thank you. Do you have any other detail you could share? I have now gathered that RvR is basically Grp vs. grp or Raid vs. raid right?
Anyways thanks again. anyone and everyone please post some info. Give me god and bad. So that i can make a sound decision. I will D/L the 14 free from here but before i want to gather info to help with my decision.
thank you again
Also, it's worth mentioning that there is a 100% PvE server called Gaheris (which is the one I play on). I'm pretty sure you can duel with players, but most of the bonuses that require PvP to achieve on the normal servers (realm points and the abilities they can buy) are obtained via PvE groups on Gaheris. There are a number of other differences on the shard, as well, and they were made specifically for people who prefer cooperation to competition (although you have to cooperate quite a bit in RvR, too).
On the normal servers, you can only create characters from one realm; that's to help prevent people from having characters in competing realms that are used as spies. Since Gaheris is cooperative, however, that restriction doesn't exist; you're able to play characters from all of the three realms, quest in all three realms, own a home in any of the three realms, and group with people from any of the three realms. Gaheris does have a smaller population than your average realm, but it's not prohibitively small. There's also nothing to prevent you from playing characters on shards of different types should you desire a bit more spice in your life.
It's just something to think about if you're not into PvP. You can avoid PvP on most of the other servers as well, though some of the freedom of Gaheris has to be traded for realm balance in order to maintain the "us versus them" aspect of realm-versus-realm play (if you're from Hibernia, don't expect to be shopping for groceries in Jordheim). While Dark Age of Camelot is largely known for that realm-versus-realm approach to gaming, there's definitely plenty of PvE activity to keep anyone busy for quite awhile. That realm-versus-realm reputation was what kept me away from DAoC for years, but I'm having an excellent time with the game now that I'm actually playing it instead of reading about it. Cheers.
well thnk you for the info. you certainly squashed my PvP nightmares but..... I do have a concern. It would be nice to TRY OUT this realm vs realm type thing. is there where i would go with a small team and we take over a castle or something of that nature?
Thanks again jenuviel for the information. i have had some really good posts so far and it is helping alot. I am staying on these boards long enough to try and get answers as soon as i can.
What about this game that U DO NOT like? I would really like to hear the good and the bad!
thanks again
time and feedback is much appreciated
Well, there's not really anything like that on Gaheris that I'm aware of. The frontier keeps do exist, but they're held by tough NPCs instead of players. If you want to try RvR stuff, you'll have to dip your toes in the water of another server. None of the realms are significantly better than the others when it comes to PvE stuff, though, so you'll mostly be giving up scenery rather than function by playing on a competitive server. All three realms have the same amount of dungeons, similar Catacombs areas, access to Atlantis and the Shrouded Isles, etc. Also, as I said, there's no penalty whatsoever for having multiple characters on multiple servers other than the time it takes to play them up.
As far as what I don't like.. I can't really think of too many things that are specific to DAoC. Most of my issues are just common to all MMOs. Specifically, though, it's the diminishing returns model of advancement; the first few levels are very quick, but they get slower and slower and sloooooower the further you get. I'd much prefer twice the number of levels with a steady progression rate, but you can't always get what you want.
It would be nice if the melee professions had less downtime associated with them; without class abilities or realm abilities for healing your health and endurance, life is really full of a lot of sitting. There are realm abilities available to everyone after level 20, but no one will be able to afford the basic healing ability until 25 unless they pvp; that's half the level track with no means of healing other than sitting on your behind (unless you happen to have access to money and/or crafted potions). Additionally, the best weapon styles tend to be positional, meaning you have to be in front of, to the side of, or behind your opponent in order to use them. That's terrific for situational stuff like RvR or artifact groups, but there are quite a few skills that you'll rarely if ever use as a melee unless you're in those situations. Spell abilities, however, tend to be much more useful on the whole.
Really, though, none of that stuff is a huge concern for me; I just mention it because you were looking for a few criticisms to go with the compliments. There are a ton of races and classes in DAoC, so there are plenty of playstyles available for the picking. While I learned pretty quickly that I didn't enjoy DAoC's version of the warrior professions I normally play in these games, I've still had fun with a cabalist, a vampiir and a druid. Overall, it's a very large game world that offers a lot of different options based on how you want to play the game. There are quick-but-repetitive task dungeons for min-maxers and those looking to take the fast track, but there's also a lot of terrain with a lot of dangerous and interesting stuff to explore, a tremendous number of quests (with interesting lore and backstory, if you don't mind reading the quest dialogue!), and just a lot to do overall. It's definitely worth the 14-day free trial, if nothing else. You won't get to see the swirling sky in the Veil Rift with the trial, but you'll get an idea of what the game offers.
I can't comment too much on this game as i am new myself but i can hopefully provide some insight into other games for you.
Star Wars Galaxies:
Dead! pretty much pointless really as the game is currently choking and everywhere you go, you're going to get a lot of hatred from the fanbase for this game due to recent changes. The game is very grindy and once you get past the new stuff, it is basically one giant grind. PvP is decent in this game but i think that a lot of the Galactic Civil War (rebs vs imps) has died down and you don't get none of the base raids like you used to. I can't comment ont he crafting anymore but from what i have heard, it's also as good as dead and nothing like it used to be. The fanbase are extremely helpful and providing you don't beg, you will find people will be willing to give you some stuff and helpy ou get started.
World of Warcraft:
I would say this is a good choice and i think any mmo fan, owes it to themselves to at least say they experienced this. The game has lots of quests and you can usually find yourself, not really having to grind all that much to level up. Ofcourse the quests don't really have much variety and involve going from point A to point B, or killing x amount of mobs for certain quest items. Still, leveling is fun and you will enjoy seeing all the places along the way.
PvP here sounds almost ideal for you and in theory, is perfect but unfortunately, it just doesn't turn out this way in reality. World pvp is dead other than the odd teenager ganking every now and again and the majority of the pvp is focused in battlegrounds. Most don't come up often until you reach level cap but they usually consist of four types of people... People who try to use teamwork but due to everyone else, nothing gets done, these sort usually resort to childish flaming in the end. Hero wanabes, who think they are legolas and don't care about anyone else and think they can take on the world, these along with the whiners, tend to be the children and unfortunatly, make up the majority of the battlegrounds. You then get the silent people, who are prepared to work as a team but usually remain quiet, these sort are often half decent and mostly, quite mature. Lastly, you get the eltiests, arrogant people who vary and generally come in one of the other sterotypes but they always consider themselves better than you. These are generally the best pvpers but because of their attitude, you both loathe and dispise them.
Crafting here is really really basic and nothing that could be considered challenging or truly enjoyable but i guess it's there nonetheless and it could have been worse. There isn't anything though which can offer as long term diversity from the combat.
The fanbase here is also truly terrible and if you choose a pvp server, you will be very lucky to have someone show you the ropes. You might get some helpful people who created alts but asking a level 60 for help, will just get you laughed at followed by "noob" comments.
If you decide to get this game, i would recommend joining a pve server, this way you won't get ganked and you can pvp at your own chosing. I havn't been on a pve server but people generally tend to stay there and you find these are usually the most populated servers.
I will also mention that the endgame in this game is quite boring and involves repeatedly doing the same instances to get armour or grinding battlegrounds to a point where it no longer becomes fun. As i also mentioned before, crafting doesn't really create any diversity from the main combat and to get the rare parts to make the rare items, usually involves killing a monster over and over for an ultra rare drop.
Everquest 2:
I havn't really experienced this game fully but i wil try my best to add what i know about it. The game has a steady fanbase and with the server merges, you will find that you should be okay with people and stuff. This game is also quest orientated but it is somewhat more grindey than WoW and i have seen a few complaints about questing feeling like a grind later on. I personally didn't enjoy the quests in this game and found them to not really be tougher than WoW from a difficulty standpoint, but more of an inconveniance with bad directions. Also, it's good fun having to find towns people going in every house looking for that one npc you need to find /end sarcasm. Crafting, was good in this game but i heard they made it a lot easier, still it's considered one of the best crafting systems in the current generation of mmorpgs. PvP will soon be added to servers but for the pvp you want, arena based combat is here but i havn't tried this so i can't comment. I also can't really comment on the fanbase being helpful or not but the community boards seem somewhat nice with the developers quite active.
D&D Online:
Can't comment at all on this but it is pve only i'm afraid.
DAoC:
People have already commented on this for you and gave you a good amount of information and i am somewhat new to the game myself but from a new players standpoint.. the game is quite tough to get into at first and the controls feel slightly awkward and i also find the UI to be quite bad. Ofcourse, i have been told that you do get used to it and once you get to the core of the game, it's very good.
I will mention though that i am lead to believe that the majority of the community are pvpers and the most active servers, are the classic ones which don't have Trials of Atlantis expansion added (the raid dungeons of the game.) I am also told that pve here is quite tough endgame and that ToA makes WoW endgame seem like mere childs play. Ofcourse, this is from just what i have heard and i am sure some of this could well be wrong.
RvR is indeed good fun though and from my limited experience with it, it sure beats anything i have seen in a game to date with the possible exception of SWG pvp back in it's day.
Okay, wow that was a long post and if you find the time to read it all, i hope it becomes somewhat informative for you. I will add that the only games i can truly speak about are WoW and SWG, the rest of them involve things i have heard about and not fully experienced myself.
Thank you Senden,
This information is most usefull i appreciate the time and effort you put into it. Can you clear up one thing though. Is the regular server what i want if; I want to PVP or RvR when "I" want to. And do those Regular servers allow for plenty of PVE content.
Second instance i am running into is this. I am more of a ranged person in game, shooting etc. my brother is strictly melee. COH i played blasters and controllers basically. my brother was strict with Tanks, scrappers. What types best suit US in here to learn on. and with how we feel about pvp and such how is the game negatively affected for our play styles i;e If my broter uses a melee class can he solo on his own alot? I hope my question is clear. if not i will try to clarify aftewr you post.
thank you again, and all who have helped
I found WoW to be very shallow and uninteresting, especially in the end game. And the graphics just completely turned me off.
SWG no longer exists. Please stop calling NGE by SWG's name. It just isn't the same game anymore. From now on please refer to Star Wars Galaxies by it's proper, current, name: NGE, which sucks and is probably going to die or get changed, again. (Hope that explains how I feel about SWG).
EQ2 is a solid title with lots to do and a very complex crafting system to boot. It DOES require some pretty serious horsepower to really enjoy the graphics, which are very good. But EQ2 always left me feeling like something was missing. It was ok up till about level 20 then just kind of went 'meh'.
DAOC has it all. The cool thing about DAOC is that if you buy the game you have access to, effectively, 3 or 4 different 'games' in DAOC:
What's cool is you don't need to launch a different client to go to the different servers. Just choose the server you want to play on and play Which is nice since even if you prefer Co-Op and decide to make your main character there, you can always create an 'alt' on one of the 'normal' or 'classic' servers and play with RVR a bit to see if you like it.
Others have addressed the other information about DAOC as well as I Could. Suffice to say that *at the very least* you should probably pick up the free trial and give DAOC a spin. Directions for getting the trial are in the sticky at the top of this forum.
