Having problems swimming

Im new to the game and I'm loving every minute of it, but I have a few minor problems right now:

Well when I first started the game I had to tweak my controls of course.  I finally figured out that the "down" key was for swimming.  I was able to submerge at the time, but since then, I have futher tweaked my controls and I cant submerge anymore.  The key I have set for "down" is the "Z" key and it is not assigned to any other control and it doesnt work.  I have tried other keys also and no luck? 

Does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong?  Can you submerge and any water that is deep enough?

Also why is there so much lag when riding a horse?

Where are you trying to submerge at?

As far as I know, the only places you can submerge are in the ToA areas and out in the frontier. Hope that helps.

No, you can submerge in any water deep enough.  I do it all the time in BG's for example

My "Down" key is Z as well.  You do kinda need to hold it down for a second or so though.
