It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!
so I've now tried at least 3-4 different "free" MMO's that are asian.
WHY are they all the same?
They all have the same kind of movement controls (click to move: f*ckng stupid!), the same lame "quest" system, barely any storylines involved in your character's progression through the game.
Honestly, I feel like they could just be some single player game you buy at the store that you play through, not some MMO.
I'm not directly bashing them but I want to see what other's think about this.
It seems like the western ones: EQ2,WoW,EQ1,Vanguard, are all so different. and just about every single Asian MMO is the exact same game.
I will say this much: Silkroad is nice on graphics, terrible on lag; RF Online reminds me of Phantasy Star Online, and Knight online is just ugly, and Tantra online is old looking.
My other question is: how in the world do they make any money from letting you play for free??!?!
Just my thoughts.

The problem is your playing Free mmo's. They do offer different things if you just look into them. Also the new lineup of asian mmo's being released in Asia pretty much blows anything western out of the water since most western mmo's are exactly the same. Same quests, same classes, same fighting styles, same game speed, and most share the same graphics.
The major problem with previous asian mmo's is that the designer were confused with what the players want. At first they thought they like level grinding and no quests or story due to the success of Lineage I and II. But after a few games like Guild Wars, they figured out they like pvp more and they like competing and showing off. Thats why the new lineups in Korea this year are really amazing games, like SUN, Huxley, Granado Espada, and Ragnarok Online 2.
if they blow all western mmos out of hte water why is UO still the most creative? no mmo has ever come near how good UO was
Because they havent been released in the states yet, and most people say the games are Korean grindfests without even looking at it; or at the minimum looking at some crappy screenshots and deeming it a piece of shit.
1. Western games also look the same. You have the same old Orc, Human, Elf fantasy crap...
2. Tell me, does Ragnarok Online look anything like Knight Online to you?
3. UO is pretty old. And, it's still not very innovative compared to Anarchy Online or EVE Online. Sci-Fi is pretty ungeneric as of right now.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
I think you answered your own question as to why they are free
I dunno, but think its funny that you used four of the most similar games in the genre as examples. Those four might all be the same, in the way that games like Lineage II, FFXI, and RFO are the same, but four better examples of western diversity might be CoH, EVE, ATiTD, and AA.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Truer words were never spoken.

Actually, no. They're not all the same. From what I've noticed, there's 2 types. One type is the one everyone knows about, such as Lineage 2, RF Online, Ragnarok Online, etc... where the game is essentially an endless grind with not much content. The other type, which people DON'T know about, are the ones that try to be unique in their gameplay, such as Trickster Online, Mabinogi, and Yogurting Online.
If any of you have taken statistics, you would know that just because a few samples exhibit the same characteristics, that doesn't mean all of them do. I could easily point at the American market for MMORPGs and go "Look, every game is a EQ clone" while blatantly ignoring examples like Second Life, EVE Online, etc...
I'm not entirely sure, but I thought Lineage 1 & 2 were pretty unpopular everywhere except in Asia. Actually, I thought that was true for all the Asian MMOs, especially in the US.
City of Hero's is run by a Korean distributer called NCSoft, also known for making Lineage 1 and 2; Guild Wars, and Auto Assault. They only rescently created a development staff in Irvine.
I'm not understanding your point about distributors/publishers, Cleffy.
distributer, not development company. Tabula Rasa I think is going to be published by NCsoft but the guy that made UO is on the development team me thinks.
Also, ALL eastern MMORPG's are similar, just compare screenshots of any eastern mmo. When I first tried RF online, I noticed how similar the models are and that the animations and UI are almost the same as Lineage 2 if not THEE same.
Apart from the original release of Meridian 59, Ultima Online is the Great-Granddaddy of the "graphical" mmo. Everybody else that has come after has maybe added some graphical polish, taken it from 2d isometric to 3d etc, but the same game mechanics are there. In fact, the mmorpg game mechanics for the most part are the same as what Richard Garriot, aka Lord British, first released with Akalabeth back in the early 1980's.
Hell, I would venture to say if someone took the mechanics from Ultima IV (a late 1980's game) and brought it up to date people might think it was revolutionary lol.
Problem is dev's are changing the paint but the car is still running like crap but publishers do not want to take a risk and try something truly unique and fun. Yes, there have been some attempts (underlight or something like that I think?) but for the most part they dont look for fun while trying to be unique.

Actually you are both right and wrong about TR. It is being developed by the creator of the Ultima Series (Richard Garriot aka Lord British) but, his studio (since EA destroyed Origin) is NCSoft Austin. RG is now apart of NCSoft and his development house (which is doing TR) is an internal part of NCSoft, just the American Branch... Much like how Sony Japan is the same but different from Sony America. (at least I think that is the closest comparison).
If you dig around on this site you should be able to find an interview with RG stating that he thought NCSoft was a great company and how he thought that he could help with marketing of asian mmorpgs over here (I think he was a fan of Lineage 1) and providing a pipeline for western mmorpgs to make their way over there.
Now, auto assault like Guild Wars is developed by a third party and being published by NCSoft. Lineage2 is developed by NCSoft Korea and published by NCSoft, localized by NCSoft Austin (I believe)
