Just wondering, any word on whether they'll have an open beta for this game?
With a game as unusual as this one, I wouldn't want to drop $40+ to find out its just not for me. I'm curious about it, but its so hard to even guess what the gameplay is like. I'd rather pass on it, to play something that may not be great, but will at least follow an expected formula, sure to entertain me for a little while. Unless I can give it a shot for free, first.
I wonder why MMOs don't offer free trials when they're first released - when hype is at its peak. Sure, they're all free to try a year down the line, but thats when they're competing with newer games, and its usually too late..
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

This game isnt gonna be having open beta for awhile.....and do you know why they dont open beta or beta to the public fast???...well see if you play it and it SUCKS....Alot of ppl that thinks the game will be good will be gone = less money for them later on.....Look at RF online they went up then when beta start they LOST alot of ppl. Its always better to have a good game with open beta comes out coz when it goes GOLD they will have millions of dollars in there hand. Look at WOW, EQ, COH....they were smart
The grammar crime: Run-on sentences join two or more complete sentences with no punctuation.
Question: How do we know we have a run-on sentence?
Example;
Michaela loves to draw horses she is a talented artist.
This sentence is incorrect because Michaela loves to draw horses and she is a talented artist can both stand as complete sentences. Therefore, we cannot merge them into one sentence without separating them somehow.
Well sorry mr grammar police. I am just lazy to do this. So I put .... and blah. So I'm sorry and I'll try my best to reply like this.
Well according to POTBS they will slowly start adding more testers who signed up for the beta over the next few months. As Rae said, they probably wont do a fully open beta testing till they feel like theyve got somthing the public is going to fully go for after they start playing. So for now all you can do is sign up for the beta and wait to see if they pick you.
You can always go to their forum. They have contest and the prizes are beta key and some other junk. I tried to go and enter those contest but fail because most of them are to do with Pirate art. That isnt my thing art and me = a bad idea haha.
I've applied for beta, but that's enough for me - to clarify, I'm in no hurry to try the game, its not about impatience. Just curious to try it before its released, or even shortly thereafter. If they do an open beta a week or two before release, that'd be enough. My point is only that its not a game I'd spend $50 on, without a better sense of the gameplay. Since release is a ways off (I guess?) its not really an issue yet, just thought I'd say something ahead of time.
I'm confused as to how far along this game is. I wouldn't want to miss the chance to try it, so maybe that's even the main reason I asked. An open beta can come and go unnoticed, if you're not following a game closely.
Also, it occurrs to me that maybe an open beta is generally considered a safe assumption. I used to think so, but then read that Auto Assault won't be having one. So just wondering.

Well, open betas have been, are, and will always be nothing more than a publicity stunt, and maybe server load testing.
Why you may ask?
Well, generally 90% (I made that up, but I don't doubt it is close to that) of people playing in an open beta are there to a.) play a free game or b.) see if they will like the game. So, it stands to reason that the devs only have one thing to gain from an open beta- publicity.
That said, devs have said that IF an open beta is planned, it will most likely not be very long, and will be very, very late in development.
Flying Lab mentioned the possibility of open beta weekends, but don't hold your breath. FLS confirmed they have more than enough apps to complete the project without open beta. It would only be for publicity.
How far along is the game? That's hard to answer unless you're in beta, and then you're under NDA. Let's put it this way... they are still not talking about release dates yet. So you could say much, much more work to be done.
That also means you have lots of time to get into the closed beta
IMO, open betas are best for stress testing a few weeks before launch but after all major issues have been ironed out. It helps them figure out how many servers and what sort of load-balancing they will need for the first hectic weeks after launch.
As long as they can take that information and actually DO something with it, that is!
I agree. Open beta should just be for a weekend or week to stress test.
The people who flock to Beta are usually driven by selfish motives, to gain an advantage over retail customers by learning game mechanics, prime hunting areas and possible bugs for their personal use, so it's best for a game company to have an internal testing group to ferret out bugs and game design flaws.

They have said (well at least Rusty said that I think) that they are not really in favor of a free trial because alot of people would download the game just because it's free. I think they would look for something like a really small cost just to try the game. This way, only the people who are interested in buying the game after the trial would download it.

I followed a link from a news article here on mmorpg.com and they are taking beta applications. What phase this is I don't know. As part of sign up a system diagnostic is required so they are likely looking for particular specs.
To the when will it be released question, their site says "soon".
The are currently in closed Beta. They have the servers up every day for some period of time. They have picked Beta testers by equipment (especially low end equipment), by contribution to the game (ship builders), for marketing (especially in Asia), and some contest winners. Not everyone who has a confirmed Beta slot has gotten in yet. I forget how many Beta applications they accepted.
They have not said if they plan to offer an Open Beta. I will also say they have not stated a release date lately. They were suppose to ship this last March, but that didn't happen.

I have also registered for beta but have not heard back yet. I have played several MMO's including my most recent game Navy Field. It was because of what Navy Field lacked that got me so stoked about this game. I have followed the development of this game for some time now. I like how this game brings in some of the same aspects of star wars galaxy's. Like ship builders, sail makers, ect. This will give the game a larger dynamic then a game where you just shoot to kill. I cant wait to see more about this in the near future.
