it's realy interesting on how the planets are so big and you need a while to spin around them, also the way the orbiting is done is realy amazing, but it would be alot cooler if you have the effects on entering a sphere of a planet, like a spaceship entering earth.
In the past 4 months i've been working on a combat prototype for Infinity, based on the game engine and gameplay principles. The goal of this prototype is to do some early debugging and to stress test components such as the graphics, but also the physics, networking, test different user interfaces/controls schemes, and of course to get a "taste" of what the real game will feel like. The prototype is not an alpha of the game: it is a completely standalone, fully playable game. Of course it's not as "deep" as a full game, but at least it's free.
The combat prototype can be downloaded on the website on its dedicated webpage. You'll need a pretty decent config ( 2 Ghz cpu, 512 mb of ram and a pixel-shader able video card ) to get a comfortable 30 fps+.
A trailer contest has been organized a few weeks ago, and you can see the winning entry on Google Videos ( low quality ). More screenshots / videos can be seen on the media page.

Last time you spoke on this thread, you were at 35% completion. How far are you know? From what I've seen, I will be a huge follower once your game is nearing Beta stages. Keep up the good work and thank you for making a sandbox Sci-Fi game, we really need one.

Looks like the eve fan bois came out of the closet to flame your post. Ignore them - very impressive screenshots and you have a large audience to appeal to so looks like one to watch.

Not sure what you are talking about, sure there are some know-it-alls telling him his business (and yes I am a programmer so I can criticize the know-it-alls) but alot the actual Eve people seem excited.
Someone asked about fighters: Yes, they are in the game. Matter of fact if ya'll go watch the video you get to see the capitol ships launching fighters and other small craft from their bays during the battle Each fighter/smaller ship is, in turn, piloted by a player.

How are Sci-Fi Fanatsy games? I have played Everquest, Guild Wars, and World of Warcraft (EQ for 6 years, Guild Wars for 1 year, and WoW for currently 2 Years and counting) so all I have ever played was Medieval Fanstasy games...would I enjoy The Sci-Fi ones?
I would like to say this game is good news and welcome in the market...but, unfortunetly it's not!
I only play Sci-Fi games and, as we all know, there aren't many of 'em out there...so each and every "slot" in the Sci-Fi niche is precious!
So, since Infinity is basically a clone of EVE Online, which itself is less than desirable and occupying still another precious Sci-Fi slot, I can only view this presentation with disdain.

You're asking us to tell you what you like, which is impossible, because only you would know if you like something. Even then you really don't know until you try it. Now what you need to be asking yourself is, "Do I like the Sci-Fi genre?" The next question I would ask yourself if your first answer is a yes, would be, "Do I like games where the developer drops me in his virtual world and leaves me there to forge my own way into the world, without any guidance from the Dev in forms of quests?" If you can answer yes to both of these questions, than you know you will like to try Infinity.

Can you explain to me how it is a bit like an EvE/SWG rip off? Ships are ships, guns are guns, space is space, and planets are planets. It's hard to really rip off ideas such as these, just like it is hard to rip of ideas in the fantasy genre, becaues Elves are Elves, swords are swords and etc.
The sandbox model if that is what you are referring to is not really a rip off of any game. It is the ulitmate reality game when you can implement a virtual world where the player is free to do as he/she pleases without being pingeon holed into a already determined destiny set by the Devs. So it should be every Devs dream to create something like this, which means it is not a rip off. Many people dream to become the President for example. Does that make that person a rip off of George Washington?

Originally posted by Ragosch Programming is just 5% of the work, programming and debugging is around 20%. I see it from the simple fact that most game developers have studios with around 25-30 people in the developing team and such a game needs about 3-4 years to develop. This is something in between 75 and 120 man-year, am I right? - ok, I have chose 100, because it is a number good to remember. I am in programming for over 30 years and the programming part of an applciation including debugging was never more than 25-30% or the effort needed to produce the sellable product. Ok, this was not in the gaming industry nor did those applications need high-quality graphics, but they needed much networking ... and there is a huge pitfall if you think that is done in an instance. With tens of thousands of players online at the same time you might discover problems never seen before. Ragosch
I remember back in my Symbolics days a major company we worked with which was looking at doing a large and important project. They had projected a team of programmers to do the project from complete start to finish in a 2 to 3 year window. A senior developer was able to talk them into doing the project himself. He completed the project in 6 months and it was better than the original design.
Having worked around a lot of developers from places like MIT and Los Alamos, I can tell you there are some people who are exteme experts and who are worth a team of developers. They are the people who get spotted early in their careers and get paid a lot more money because they are worth it.

There isn't a lot of space-based MMOs out here, so it's natural to compare Infinity to Eve. Saying that they are clones is, however, extremely wrong. The word "clone" suggests that a game tries to mimic all the gameplay from another one, while Infinity is pretty much going in the opposite direction than Eve took. Actually, Infinity's gameplay might end up being closer to the defunct Earth and Beyond, than Eve. But even more accurate would be an "Elite" MMO, even though it's not a clone of Elite either.
If you are really interested in learning why Infinity has nothing to do with Eve, please check this thread:

I have to respond to this....
This game is good news because someone got sick of the crap mmo's out there and is doing something about it. He's not bitching that space mmo's don't provide what he wants, he is building one. If for no other reason than that he deserves the respect of gamers everywhere. EVEN IF YOU DON'T CARE FOR THE GAME.
Now aside from that I want to respond to your coment about it being an Eve clone. Tell me one planet in Eve that isn't a useless bunch of polygons. Tell me one planet you can land on. The truth is you can not. Also if you have taken anytime at all to actually learn about the product you would see there are many difference from Eve.

Infinity: The Quest for Earth, space-sim MMO with a seamless procedural galaxy.
I've been following infinity with great interest. It's amazing how far the game has come in just the past few months.
I believe he was targetting Q3 2007 for release and it looks like he's on target for it so far.

She's not Canadian, she's from Quebec.
I'm sorry I couldn't resist.

Definitely intrigued by this one. Keeping a watch on it.
