I'm all of a sudden VERY disappointed in this game.

I've been enjoying playing my lvl 9 Reaver untill I realized that there are only 7, I repeat SEVEN different skills that one can learn up to lvl 50.

There they are,  7 skills increasing in power as the level goes up.  A few of these are auras so they use the same artwork and have basically the same feel.

And after looking at the spellcasters I don't feel to much better.  A level 50 wizard might have 10 spells in their arsenal.

Dang, I had some high hopes for DAoC.  What's going to keep me playing?  As far as the spellcasting classes, does the artwork change for the spell effects at all?

Well a Reaver is a hybrid fighter starting class for Albion. So naturally they won't and shouldn't have as many spells as the main caster classes. As for the seven different skills, those are only the spells. You will get other "skills" or abilities from putting points into skills. Have a look over at http://www.camelotherald.com/styles/ and find the Reaver section with Crush,Slash,Thrust,Flexible and Shields. By putting points into those areas you will get the abilities shown from the links on that page.

Basically you do have more than 7 skills.... a fair few more.

You're reaver basically hasn't even been born yet at level 9. A reaver is a half fighter/half necro, kinda like EQ's Shadow Knight class but much more versatile. Reavers get a number of other skills that you won't even see yet until later levels. They have the melee skills with Crush, Flex, Slash, Thrust and the ability to use Shields. If you spec your reaver right, you will be able to do an anytime 9 second stun with your shield using a skill called "Slam", which in turn would enable you to do devistating damage in PvE and in RvR. Not to mention that each class gets their own unique Realm Abilities based on the number of Realm Points you have for fighting in RvR whether in be in the Battlegrounds or in high end big boy RvR, and let me tell you there is one ability called "Thornweed Field" that with enough levels in it can be devistating to other players in RvR.

Reaver is a very unique and powerful class. You need to play him more and level him up to get the jist of it and to understand. All classes have plenty of skills/spells to choose from, but you need to get your feet wet first.

You sound like I did in EQ2! image

If there's a game that has that problem, it's EQ2.  In DAoC, I've found the exact opposite.  The animations and particle effects are some of the best I have seen in an MMORPG.  There may not be dozens of effects for each class, but I find them exciting and quite cool looking.

The enjoyment of the game shouldn't come from the particle effects and spell animations.. it should be from the gameplay itself.. and that's where I think DAoC shines.  The different classes, races and quests are quite unique to DAoC.

I hope you're able to find something about DAoC that keeps you playing!

How many *different* spells do you want to have to keep track of??  A properly specced spellcaster has 15 or more different spells to use.  A properly specced healer/buff class has even more.  A Reaver has about 7 "Spells" but has multiple abilities to keep track of.

That's before we even get into Champion abilities, Realm abilities, item abilities, potions and, if you're on a TOA server, Master Level abilities and Artifact abilities.

On my Warden I have 3 FULL hotbars and he isn't even a Champ Level yet, much less ML.  He has 3 Realm Abilities.  The rest are combat skills and spells.

I shudder to think what I would do if I had even MORE crap to keep track of, especially in RVR.
