Friars just got a lot of love in the patch that went live yesterday so that would be a good choice if its a class that interestes you.

It is all about compromise. If you play a tank then getting attacked first is usually not a big deal (unless it is much higher level than you). On the other hand you do far less damage to the target and combat takes a lot longer. Casters can kill targets a lot quicker, you just need to learn to kill them before they get to you.

If you want to come over to Hibernia, we have a nice ability that makes PvE very easy for casters. You have a quickcast button (well all realms have this). You click on that so that you can cast while being hit, you then cast stun. At this point either run or nuke. At low levels you will only get 1 spell in after the quickcast so I would suggest running.

Common misconception that you cannot cast at all in melee.  This is patently not true.  The key is how fast the mob is swinging at you.  If he's swinging very fast you won't be able to cast.  If he's swinging slowly, however, you will.

What I've found is that if you can get more than 50% done casting a spell (IE 1.1 seconds into a 2 second cast time spell) before he swats you again you will cast the spell sucessfully.  If he swings at you BEFORE that, however, you won't.

So if a mob engages you first you have a few options:

    1) If you have it quickcast a stun then move away quickly, turn and nuke it as normal.

    2) If you don't have a stun then use a snare or root and do the same.

    3) If you don't ahve that or quick cast is down then try to cast between their attacks if they are slow.  If their attack speed is very fast then sprint out of there lickety split because you WILL die even to some greens if you try to melee them.

I'm not big on caster classes but my Bainshee is kind of fun to play.  Since I'm ES spec and not SG I don't have a root so I have to snare and run or cast between swings a lot.  It's not easy and it's not something you're going to do if you have more than 1 critter on you.  But it is do-able.

Also, at higher levels you get a bubble (blocks 1 hit) and later on you get brittle guards as well.  So life does get easier for casters as they become more powerful.
