I believe it is down to the grind, I hate grinding but I find it very addictive. The weird feeling in my head I think was my eyes/brain adapting to not staring at a screen, because when I quit I stopped using the computer for a while.
I am playing EVE now, and even though I quite like the game, I have had none of this manic phase at all. I think it is the training system and lack of grinding for xp, it forces you to take your time. Or the reason could be that EVE is boring and I just haven’t realised I hate the game yet, but I will reserve judgement on that until I get into the whole manufacturing/science side of it.

eve nearly drove me insane... i couldnt stop playing for like 4 days... and then all of a sudden i realized i hated it. it was no fun, and i just needed to never play again.

sucky games that are addictive suck... when it's no longer fun and just frustration, and yet still addicting, thats when it becomes dangerous.

it's actually alot like religion, it makes you into a person you hate, and you never understand the problem. ever. at least videogames never drive you so insane you murder people :)

--people who believe in abstinence are unsurprisingly also some of the ugliest most sexually undesired people in the world.--

There is definitely an addictive component to some mmorpgs, I've heard of not just WoW being addictive but AC2 and EQ were also the same in having the boards with these threads. I have 3 ideas about this.

    1. Its simular to gambling, people can get addicted to that in spending just that extra little amount of money in the hope of a reward, in mmorpgs people can spend that extra amount of time in the hope of a reward- eg levelling.

    2. Dopamine. Everytime you achieve something ingame you release this. This could be addicting physiologically.

    3. Its not addictive. But with mmorpgs they are focused around time investment. Most games you play, you have enough, you move on. Mmorpgs reward you continuuing past that. Meaning people play more than they want to. And secondly, people play when they in fact may not want to.

wow dude, maybe you need to tell his doctor or one of his close mates because he will end up being dead. This is pritty serious man and i think you need to tell someone that he will listen to.

I was kind of addicted to WoW when I was playing it but it wasnt governing my life. I could easily stop playing as and when the needs arose. Im a married father of 3 so I couldnt let it rule my life. My wife and kids are far more important than damned games. Still, there were times when I was so engrosed on my grinding that my wife would say things to me that would go in one ear then out the other. Thats when I decided I would stop. I think its all too possible that I could have gone to the next addictive stage of my gaming.

Now, I play when they have all gone to bed or the wife is watching crappy soaps and then only for a few hours becasue I want to feel good for the next day. I have a full time job also.

I do play every night but also have a good life away from the PC. I go to the gym 3-4 times a week and like to read. These are important to counter balance sitting on my arse in front of the PC :-)

Those guys playing all day with little to no sleep are in need of serious help and its not a laughing matter, its a serious problem in need of medical attention. Delete your characters, cancel your accounts, uninstall the game and then break the CD's.

It's sad that the most gamers out there are nothing like you ... Obviously, you didn't lose your touch with the real world. Sadly enuff it's hard for other people to stop playing games although they see everything else dieing around them when they keep playing the game image

I'm happy for you to see that you kicked your habbit and that you dont "game" it away ... Atleast you can live your life without it being controlled by something that doesn't exist. Although I'm only 16 I really respect people like you, who have the courage to change their life when it's necessary ...

Well with every new crop there is addiction enmass.New crop now is playing wow so they are the new target

EQ1 probably made me not graduate from university with honours. While my uni buddies have mostly finished their masters i was just starting and now doing my phd i took the long route(as the normal one involves every free minute i have from work).

Most people in my phd study group are women with babies/young kids who have limited time.

So while i could say oh i do my job,pay my bills ,go out with friends i am still addicted as it has slowed my progress to some point.

And i think most(if not all) have at some point gone thru a stage they lost a opportunity or slowed their life because of a mmorpg if truth be told.

It is just the degree of addiction thats different.
