I've noticed that most of the bashing on <insert new game here> has mentioned that no one talks in the game so the community must suck. I've seen this enough that I started thinking about my own social habits in these games and I realized something that may be the direct cause of all the silence. I use Ventrillo. When I meet people in a game, I ask if they use Vent or some other voice over IP program and when I see them online again, I either join their vent or invite them to come to mine. It's a major pain in the ass to type while you're trying to play a game at the same time. Almost all the talking I do in Guild Wars is over our Guild's Vent server. I did pretty much the same thing in City of Heroes and Anarchy Online, although when I played AO we use Roger Wilco.
How many of you guys use voice over IP? And if you don't, why not?

It's called roleplaying.
The lack of a headset is a major issue for me.

No Userbar here, sorry to disappoint.
I don't really want to get into my reasons, but I hate phones, and similarly hate voice chat. I'm much more comfortable typing.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I am hoping for an MMORPG with the feature that Battlefield 2 has. WITH a voice prog implemented. Now is this an idea for them developers scanning the forums? I wonder who will pick this one off my idea table?
Man that would be so interesting to group up with ppl and talk to others all over the world!
Naturally muting/ignore ppl would be a feature as well.
have to be in a room
where you wont disturb others
this is why vent sawks
the good computer i play on is located in our living room
so
when people are watching movies or are in a nearby room
cant really be talking a loud to the mic
or have the speaker volume too loud
now if i hi jacked this computer
and moved it to my room and shut the door
i could blast it and talk in my room
just need a good excuse to get the comp
into my room
Mics are about $8 at Wal*Mart. It's just easier if you're in a guild and talking a lot. Otherwise, I'd rather just type.

Good thing Walmart doesn't exist in this country.
Also, I'm 12, and my voice has just broken. So I sound like a retard. Which is also an issue.

I will not use voice over IP.
I used to use it and have been in guilds that require it. However I got tired of hearing people Burp, cough, chew food, argue with their spouse, and so on.
I have even had people **fart in their mic so we could all hear it.
No thanks.
Another thing hearing a dwarf speak with a Bronx accent in a game just ruins immersion.
Support Bacteria, its the only culture some people have.
In any organized group PVP, voice over IP is a must. It takes way too much time for fast communication by typing. A group that is using VIOP will almost always defeat a group who is not, simply because a group becomes far too disorganized when people are communicating through typing.

In any PvP - squad based game TS (or sim) is essential, I play a lot of PS and the outfit I run with has it's own TS server, and it makes a huge difference.
It's just so much quicker to say "Watch out to the left I saw 2 HA users down there". Than to type it, and that assumes anyone even notices what you typed.
It also works with games like EQ2, yeah you can have macro's or watch the bars, but it's still quicker to say out of mana, epp got agro or we're going to get an add if we don't backup.
Even if you don't want to speak just being able to hear what your team/group mates are saying can help.
I usually use teamspeak but..
Depends the game...I lean to not needed it for GW but won't play counterstrike or ghost recon without it. Depending the type of game it could make or break the immersion. In eve, i'll use it for pvp combat, esspecially when i am pirating with a small groups but will stick to typing almost all other times.
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
VoIP is a must for PvP and Raiding just cuz you can spam skills and type at the same time. However, banter can get annoying and moderating/pw protecting your server is a must or you get all kinds of annoying tards on your server.
TS is scaleable to around 400 or so people and , Vent is cheep and the codec sound is better but if you get more than 40 ppl on a single vent they tend to crash and burn. Wilco is junk it dosent scale very well to beyond 20 people but it is the cheepest to run.
PUSH TO TALK is alsom a must.
Voip has pros and cons. I use it for BF2 and Planetside to talk to team and squad mates so that we can coordinate our attacks and to warn each other of impending danger. However, I'll not stand for excessive cussing and will mute people who do it way to often. I also don't like to hear some whiney kid crying over the fact that he was taken out by another player - these go on mute, too.
I find it hard to believe that more people do not take advantage of such free software as Team Speak and such. It sure beats typing any day of the week, especially during a heated firefight.
I didnt really use it untill PS.. then again in WoW when you get into endgame raiding or PvP.. where you have no time to type but you need to get information across to people.
if you have a problem with people arguing without turning their mic off, or burping into the mic or crap like that.. join a more mature guild. We have a 0 tolerance for crap like that on our Vent unless its an accident.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
Totally agree Munki, all thought I'm lucky that most of the people I TS with are good in this regard. If anyone gets out of hand we let them know with a friendly warning.

Bollocks. Walmart exists everywhere... even though I've yet to ever shop at one. In the UK Walmart is ASDA. Here is the address of the one nearest you:

You can get a cheap headset for about a tenner anywhere. Go get one so we can hear your squeaky man-voice!
The main reason for me not to use Teamspeak or such is ... language.
(1) I am not a native english speaker and have problems to understand the accent of people from all over the world especially if they talk local slang also. Hearing this kills immersion for me and raises this "stranger" feeling ... habits of people from other nations are often strange.
(2) Especially americans speak in a way that is horrible, often without any culture and full of "damned", "shit" and "fuck" and those words. This kills immersion also and makes me feel sad and disgusted, as I am European and here people dont use fecal language all the time.
So to keep the illusion to play in a virtual world with people worth knowing, it is better to not hear them speak at all.

Funny thing how technology works. In the old days of pen and paper RPGs, voice chat was the most commonly used in role playing. As a matter of fact, it would have been rather absurd to see someone comunicating with writen or typed notes to each other. Now that we have much more advanced technology, people use role playing as an excuse to type rather than speak to other players. And I don't know about anyone else, but the role playing doesn't seem to be helped that much by typing to me.
That said, I would just LOVE to see a game voice chat maker come up with one in which filters could be used to make a big burly guy sound like a female elf, or a small girl sound like a troll. Voice chat with filters would be a great way to promote RPing in todays RP free RPGs.
In the old days you role-played with 100% friends sitting around a table, today in an MMO you play with 70% strangers, 29% idiots and 1% friends, most of them speaking in a foreign language (at least for me it is that way) - that is the difference.

My definition of what a friend is is very strict - guess I would call most of your friends just "well known". It takes months or even years before I might find someone worth for the title "friend". It is all about trust and to build up trust needs time.

I just started using VOIP last night. I would have been using it for years, but I just didn't have the bandwidth on my old connection.
Talking to the guys you're playing with should make the whole experience far more fun, specially when you're playing with your regular gang. There are people that I played with online for months, but I never really got to know much about them because typing is a pain.
I quite surprised to hear all these negitive comments really.

The race doesn't always go to the swiftest, nor the battle to the strongest, but that's the way to bet.
