Do MMORPG"s create insomnia?

RufiusRufius Member Posts: 2,031

I mean everytime I start playing an MMORPG I end up staying way to late and sometimes all through the night to where I can't do anything the next day cause I'm exhausted. Now if you're going to freak out on responsibility and junk, I don't wanto to hear it and I'm not going to listen. Just wondering, how do people break away from their addictions to the game?

What I try to do is go into other kinds of programs or, work cleanin up around the house so I can sleep the nxt day at the right time. But, it's a slow process, can't really do it with the snap of a finger and, if I do there'll be hell to pay that day I'm awake.

Professor Hubert Farnsworth - That question is less stupid but, you asked it in a profoundly stupid way.

If anyone has found a way to break away from an mmo addiction... Please tell me.

Well Yes i do get this when starting a new Mmorpg. And the only way i know to break it is to wait it out. In about 2 weeks or 3 the game should drop the new feeling and you should sleep again lol. Well thats how it works for me anyways.

The first thing is to consider why you prefer to game when you know it's going to stand in the way of other activities (in your case, due to sleep deprivation) and plan a course based on that. Taking up new activities is usually a good idea.

As for sleep, it's helpful if you try to go to sleep at the same time every night and do something to relax before bed. Taking a bath (not a shower), listening to music or reading a literature book.

    * City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant.
    * City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.

I suffer from insomnia anyway so the answer is no for me. However, MMOs do give me something to do when I can't sleep once in a while. I try and go to sleep as early as I can because I know I'll be up and about before 5 AM. I feel sorry for my husband. He comes to bed around 3 AM and shortly thereafter, I'm awake and tidying up the house or doing laundry or something. I cherish our brief moments of sleeping together, though.

When I go to bed at night, it takes me a good half hour at least to get all of the MMO stuff out of my head....

It's not the game, it's the player.

Personally, I prefer 5 hours of sleep a night or less. I find sleep to be a complete waste of time. I figure that when I die I will have all the free time that I want to sleep.

It can be tough to walk away from these type of games though. You get going on a quest line and you finish it but it leads to something else and you just have to finish that one and so on. One way to avoid constant insomnia due to your need to stay in front of a game is to stay up all night one night and then your body will most likely not allow you to repeat that the next night. After time you get used to working on little to no sleep. At least I have.

When I first started playing WoW I was averaging 3 hours of sleep a night. I have a full time 9 to 5 job. I have a wife and a (now)19 month old daughter. A shower and a cup of coffee when I get to the office is typically all I need to get me through the day. If I managed to stay up without sleep the night before I sometimes will take an hour nap when I get home from work, but no longer than an hour or I'm going to be up all night again.

It's all about discipline. Same thing with breaking the "addiction" that MMOG seem to provide. Quitting, as stated above, is the best way to break the addiction. Other than that you just have to train yourself to only play a set amount of time. Discipline folks.

Have lack of sleep made you an idiot? Keeping yourself up with coffee is not only stupid, but very unhealthy and can result you getting that "all the free time for sleep" sooner than later.

When I play EVE,or WOW,or whatever,I usually have a goal set in mind. A new ship. Completing a run with my guild. Grinding for a new item. Levelling up since I'm so close. Completing a task.

Once that task is done,I feel bored to continue with the game unless a dramatic event happens. Otherwise,I log out of the game, feeling good that I have achieved something in-game.

A case of limiting my grinding per game. Usually works for me. That and not playing Counter-Strike before I go to bed, because I can check the time on any other game. That game can really keep you up. image

They don't create insomnia, the good ones just give you a reason to stay awake... even when you have work in a couple hours.

Stay away from that girl, she is not respecting your personality when she gets mad when ever you play. In a relationsship there must be room for the needs and desires of both partners. If your partner hinders you living out one of yours permanently (and that is "when ever") you will hate it sooner or later and that means you start hating her ... and that is the end of relationsship.

Hmm. This is kinda interesting I guess.

It would be difficult to measure empirically since the majority demographic of mmogers are college age or older. College of course utterly cooks the part of the brain that regulates diurnal cycles.

Now I won't lean on my personal experience because I am known to follow the 30 hour day. However, it is likely that the aftereffects of mmoging is akin to huge amounts of stimulation and dopamine cycling. This could be anything like PTSD, or shellshock, to withdrawal symptoms. Incidental sideeffects on the sleepcycle have to be present.

My experience is that a long bout of gaming is usually followed by a long period of restlessness followed by very deep sleep.

In a typical psychological diagnosis, I expect this would probably be classified as delayed-type sleep disorder, but with behaviour/stimulant addiction morbidity. (I seen a couple episodes of M*A*S*H. I know some stuffs.)

The really interesting studies in 40 years will be the effect of mmogs on alzheimers progression and neural pathway degradation.

College is just a very expensive play pen for young adults, where the majority drop out or end up saying," You want fries with that?"

MMORPG's have become in my opinion a more legal version of gambling. Cept you're gambling with your health not your money but, even then maybe...

I found that finding a group with good and understanding players works best.

I always feel that when a group I am in is questing or instancing well, I don't want to be the person that has to say "I'm going to have to go now, good luck finding a new Healer/Tank/Mage etc. to keep the group successful." That sometimes keeps me going for another hour or so before I can find a good time to call it quits. But, if I am in a group with close friends or guildmates, I can always leave, and they can usually find one more immediatley.

I don't know if that is just me, but I always hate the person that leaves which crashes the group, so I never want to be that person. Anyone else?

The reason why you are suffering from insomnia is not because you are using your PC (unless it has a cheap fan in it that makes it sound like a lawnmower), but because you are using your brain all the time. You need to do something that doesn't take much brain power.

Anyone hear about that story where a married couple played WoW sitting next to each other, but only communicated through typing to each other?

Yeah, i heard about that... what freaks! ::::05::

Maybe its just me but I seem to meet a lot of strange people in MMORPGs, they just won't stop messaging me about all their problems in life and how it went all wrong for them or their cats died. What is it about MMORPGs that attract such wierdos?

As for the world of warcraft question about leaving your group in the middle of an instance, theres an art to this so that you don't get everyone angry at you for leaving. You've got to be very sly and get the whole group killed either by pulling too many mobs or pulling at the same time as the main puller, but do it so no one notices and they just look like adds. After a couple of wipes, the group will all be so ::::27:: people will start leaving, then you can just leave too and you won't look so bad as the group was splitting up anyway.

While I appreciate your need to call people idiots because you lack the ability to read and comprehend something, please try re-reading my post. No where did I say that I keep myself up with cofee. I said that I have a shower in the morning and A cup of coffee when I get to the office... If one cup of joe is going to kill me that much quicker then maybe we need some warning labels. Sounds like a good job for you, warning label maker, that way you don't have to read anything, you can just copy/paste/print.

Average adult need 8 hours sleep, few people need just 6 hours sleep. You claim sleeping 5 hours or less. It's would not be the cup of joe that harms you put the fact you aint giving your brains proper rest. In the end I dont even belive your claim of sleeping 5 hours or less.

  • kovahkovah Member UncommonPosts: 692

Fair enough. And I average about 5 hours a night. There are those nights that I get more and those that I get less. I have been living that way for quite some time. If you can promise me that I am going to live a long life and not get hit by some soccer mom putting on makeup while driving her oversized Excursion the next time I get in my car then I will vow to quit treating myself so poorly. In the meantime, worry about how much sleep you need and I'll worry about how much I need.

Like you said, "Average adults need 8 hours." Well, maybe I'm not average. Some sleep experts say that 8 hours is pushing it close to being too much. Some sleep experts say that 6 is all you need. I'll jsut stick with my way out there theory that everyone is different. I refuse to live in a bubble and worry about what little things I'm doing that might shorten my life span when I could die at any moment. If staying up all night every night makes me happy, guess what I'm going to do...
