Return to Old School RPGs.

I really love the old school RPGs. My favorite part was being able to control multiple characters.

Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Star Ocean 2, and so many others. I was wondering what, if any MMORPG's have taken this idea and run with it? Final Fantasy Tactics and Dragon Warrior III were both RPGs that essentially allowed you to recruit generic characters from the normal heroes. Tactics had many job classes, and I thought this would be a nice solution to a game with tons of job classes(Star Wars Galaxies-Pre-CU). Ideally I think 100 job classes would be cool in a skill based system.

but anyhow I am just throwing this idea out there for discussion.

Funny you mention it, but ever since I played Final Fantasy Tactics I wished there was a version of it you could play online with access to more jobs, especialy the ones you didn't normally get to play as in the game on the Playstation (without a cheat anyway ~_^).  The problem is, that for an online game, it would probobly end up getting old pretty fast to most people.  I like turn based games like that, so I would be fine, but most people don't want to sit there and watch the enemy moving, then you get to move 4-5 blocks and swing, repeat, and watch the enemy do it again.

For a niche audience, FFTonline would probobly sell great.  The problem is that it might not sell well enough to keep itself alive.  It would be a great game to dream about though, maybe we'll have it someday.

There was actually a game a lot like it being developed a couple years ago (and it was korean, imagine that!) Of course I haven't seen any sign of it in a long time, but if you can it's called Neo Dark Saver. Also, I concur, I like the idea of a FFTonline. As long as Square doesn't delete my characters and account for no reason again.

I wasn't exactly thinking of a turn based game, mainly because online and turn based game don't work out well usually.

Final Fantasy Tactics was a great game. I loved playing it. If it was an online game that would be pretty sweet. Nothing hyper-juiced-up, just the original game and the ability to match against other players online to see who could kick who's butt. If it was an online game, I would imagine a lot of people yawning over it, but some die-hard fans who would make a good community possible.

Dragon Warrior was the single greatest game of all time.

Well...there WAS a project run by an individual that was a MUD that was based on FFT and FF5. I believe it was called Squaresoft MUD or something. No clue if it's still running.

As for an MMO...don't hold your breath. While SE is coming out with another few MMOs, the chances of them revisiting either of their major franchises for an MMO is unlikely. FFXI does allow you to change jobs on the fly though, and master every single one if you so choose, with 2 more coming out with the expansion.

I don't care much for the franchises, what I am talking about is the power for one person to control multiple characters at the same time, and what if any MMORPGs have ventured or thought about venturing in this area.

OOO multiple characters. Well that one is easy. 2 games are coming like that. Grando Espada and Gods and Heroes. Those are real-time. Then you have Tactics Online which also allows you to control multiple people, and it's psudo real-time. See, your missions are against other players, and each player has X amount of time to complete their missions. The clock ticks while you decide where/how to move and what you want to do on your turn, then it stops. So all in all, it's close to real time.
