If I had to say what is Planetside's weakest link is their tutorial. STEP 1: Get some Certifications! I see so many noobs running around with the starter gun/armor (Suppressor). Head to the HART building (the big building in your sanctuary right in front of you). You will see little terminals that when you walk up to the them they read "Press G to access the Certification Terminal". This terminal controls what you can use on the battlefield. I would recommend starting with Medium Assult / Rexo. This will give you access to a new armor (can take more damage, hold more weapons/ammo, but run slower). Medium assault gives you a decent weapon. Spend the rest of your points as you see fit, some sort of vehicle is good.
To access these items, head over to the equipment Terminal (looks similiar to the Cert term but bigger). Don't get fooled by Armor Piercing bullets, these are crap. Just get regular ammo for everything.
Once you are ready to head out, DO NOT HIT INSTANT ACTION!!!! Instant action usually takes you to a battle where your side is loosing, which means, you will get killed ALOT. Get on the HART when it lands. Look for a door with a Min/Sec timer above it. When it reaches 0:00, go through the door. The HART will launch in a few seconds, and display the interstellar map. Look at each planet, and see where the hotspots are (flashing explosion icons). Double click on a planet with hotspots, it should display the planet up close, and open a window that shows you the percentages of population (if blank then it is a very small fight, usually not worth it). In the beginning, stick to planets where your side has more pop. Lastly, select a drop point near the action, but not right on top of it. This is done by clicking anywhere on the map (you cannot drop directly on a base from the HART). Once you pick a spot near the action, click button to activate your drop.
My last piece of advice is don't expect to kick people's butts right away. It takes some time to get used to the controls and map, and many people have been playing this game for 2+ years. You may die many times before you kill one bad dude, just be patient. The game is very easy to learn, but hard to master (just the way I like it). After a few days of play, you should have no problem getting in action, and fighting for your side. GOOD LUCK!

This game is about controlling land and killing alot of other players :-). This game is a vicious circle, you work so hard to take all the bases on a island, takes you 6 hours or more jsut to go to sleep and wake up with the land controlled by someone else who probably ghost hacked it while no one was on. THis games I think is more on personnal stats now than your empire owning evberything.
There are constant 3 way battles where one empire gets screwed and gets double teamed, you are going to find that some weapons are better than others.
Don't get me wrong i love this game, I am a 4 year vet so I have seen it all. If you like FPS with a chance to get higher ranks and better guns than this game is fun.
With the latest or one of the latest updates, they changed the start so that players begin with no Cert points, but already have Rexo, Med Assault and Lightning tank. The also put some favorite presets in so that new people can just walk up to the terminal and get started.
