Its already been done in mmo's but isn't hyped as much in them. So it really isn't that great.
Having real money economy kinda takes the fun out of the game when people are playing the game as a job. They would make bot accounts and stuff, then take what they earn and sell it out for large profit. They're is one upside profit wise. All the bot accounts would pay for them so you would be banking in on the increased amount of players; but the legitimate players will complain and leave.
Every MMORPG has a real money economy. As long as there's an exchange rate between currencies you can consider them both real, be it gil, gold, or otherwise.
There are already many games like this. "Free" MMORPGs like Conquer Online tend to be the most notorious for this. People pay real money for special items for their characters. They'll also sell items, money, and characters, whether it is legal or not, via eBay or by other means. This isn't exactly new, and actually will probably suck because everybody will have an "uber" toon that they paid money for without having to do any work. I would definitely not quit EverQuest II to try this out simply because of this "real money economy."

Actualy Project Entropia is more what the OP is thinking of. In P.E. you buy currency with real money to have ingame. I think its the only game of its kind.
Actually Puzzle Pirates has been doing this for about a year. The toons that pay for the doubloons can buy access to more content and the free toons can buy doubloons with gold gaind through sailing to gain access to content. The content being things like officership and shop ownership and crafting.

It seems since they adopted this income mode, their revenues are up but they have now become a loss making company.
