As long as I'm starting new idea threads .....in game music

Two words: Blank CDs

They will be semi-rare items in game. Icarus will monitor how many they put in. Basicly if a player finds a blank CD, they may upload (via in game applet) .mp3's from their own computer. The server would then store these and encode them to play in game sounds for each track. Since Icarus can monitor how many they put in, they could say have 1 gig reserved for this etc. This way people could be driving with some cool in game music that other people could hear. Or rush into battle with a boombox blaring kind of like a PA standard bearer. Since players need to upload the music, when they get the CDs they will be blank. Meaning a blank CD would have a great trade value on the market if there were only like 1000 in game. I think this would provide a great atmosphere boost. Like driving around the desert listening to Deliverance, or strutting through town with a boombox playing Black Betty.

The only thing would be what if someone wanted to play porno sounds or even worse someone from the RIAA uploads a track of 5 seconds song 4:00 static.

The problem is the RIAA, they'll sue the company as it is technically distributing the music without a license to do so. And they're doing it for free which is just madness (why give things for free when we can make money!). Anyway, I think they can go the Fallout way and just get some good atmospheric music. Or steal the new Battlestar Galcatica's soundtrack! Its simply awesome and is great for every situation ::::32:: (no I'm not plugging the show >.> ). But trust me, wardrums are awesome, and nBSG doesn't skimp on the wardrums.

I think going original would be best. You could do your idea, but legal troubles abound. And if you really want all your friends to hear it, just get teamspeak and play it over that.

I've always liked the idea of having player uploaded content, but Cthulhuvong has it right... too much red tape is involved in ANY sort of music sharing these days. I do like the idea of finding CDs though. These CDs or records would contain original content, just stuff different from the ambient tracks. It would be yet another archaic technology you could have fun collecting, along with CD and record players.

I agree that I would much rather original music was produced for the game, it's about vision and feeling and atmosphere. so in terms of actual game music. Original all teh way.

if i want to listen to my own music when mmorpging ill just turn down the game music and have winamp on.

On the records thing, I posted the idea on this forum, probably few pages back now. To be very rare items, Records.

And then you need to find something to play it! or build it.

And people in the area can hear the record playing, so you can sit on your porch with your record player out for the people walking through your run down outpost to hear.

And each record would have 1 or 2 songs on, and the records would be rare, so the songs you would actually get on the record would be even rarer. As records are so rare, say to have a specific recording on it would be even rarer.

    "What record do you have?"

    "I got some Ray Charles..."

"Cool, you wanna swap for a Louis Armstrong record?"

I would love to see that, so much so i would probably dedicate a character to finding and dealing in records and record players and open a music store ::::20::::::20::::::20:: yeh... a future expansion maybe ?? *beg* I want my record dealer character now :D

And it would have to be records, not CDs, come on, lets be retro!

Actually, that would be better (and I think I remember that idea) and easier to do. Galaxies had a jukebox at one point in the game, so this shouldn't be impossible. All they'd have to do is get the rights to the songs. I think the Ink Spots and Lou Armstrong would be the first things to get (Fallout). But these should be very rare, and are not essential to the game.

Could you imagine having to download all the songs that people who have found those blank cd's have uploaded onto the server? Everytime you log into the game you'd spend thirty minutes just updating all that music.

Would be badass to hear other ppls music while they pass by in their beat up ole ghetto sled. Almost like Battlefield Vietnam. I loved hearing Wagner as the helo's passed by overhead.image
