Thinking of returning, how is the soloing? etc?

EffectEffect Member UncommonPosts: 949

I've been thinking of giving CoH another shoot. Didn't really mind the game before, just quit due to time and that I got kinda bored. Granted this was way back when capes were first introduced so I have no clue as to how things are now.

First and most importantly is, ho w is the soloing? Since I'm kinda busy at times, that's where I might be spending a lot of time even though I like to group and found grouping in CoH kinda fun.

I heard there was now city wide chat. How is that? Also that experience debt was gone or just changed. Exactly what happen here?

Do characters get lairs or hideouts, just for anything really (like hanging rewards or something)? Just wondering if something like that was added. Just think somthing like that would have been cool.

Anything good that was added would be good to know about. Will be starting from level 1 if that helps.

Thanks.

If you come back get City of Villains because it adds a lot of new content to both sides of th game and you can find it really cheap.

Soloing all depends on the AT that you play, I play a spines/regen scrapper and I can solo all my missions on invincible difficulty (highest setting). Evevn if you play for only an hour or 2 at a time there isn't much reason to solo anyway because it's so easy to find a team there isn't much need to solo.
The debt cap has been cut in half, for instance it used to max out at 500k (I forget the accual numers) now it caps at 250k.

The biggest change that has been made and has some people crying like babies... Serling...cough... is that you used to be able to 6 slot powers with all damage enhancememnts or heals or whatever. Now due to deminishing returns it's best to only slot no more than 3 of the same enhancements on the same power. Exsample.. put 3 damage and 3 accuracy instead of all damage. Another change is travel suppression, all this means is that you can't teleport, superjump, superspeed away after attacking someone or something for 4 seconds after attacking (big whoop). People acted as if the sky had fallen but it's really not a big deal and accually makes you use a wider viriaty of enhances than before. With you starting out again you wont even notice a difference.

I'm sure Serling will post here about how bad the game sucks now..blah blah blah. I say don't take my word or his, just try it out for 30 days and judge for yourself. BTW if you're going to pay $15 to reactive your CoH you might as well go buy City of Villains for $30 because it comes with a free month, that way you're only out $15 for the new content.

as long as you play in primetime this won't be an issue, if you are an off peak player soloing is a necessity. It's a ghost town late at night or early in the morning.

So I can play City of Villians along with City of Heroes for one monthly price $15 or will I have to pay for one or the other?

Is there anything really different about CoV other then being able to play a bad guy?

    No.

One thing I did notice, though: doing a Pocket D mission with 2 heroes and a villain versus an invisible villain boss (don't remember all the details) was a bigger lag-fest than any Hamidon raid ever was. I was getting a frame-rate of about 3 fps because of all the visual effects going off in that mission. After the third team wipe due to lag, I quit the mission, left the team and never went back to Pocket D. If you enjoy being lagged to death and 2-shotted by bosses you can't even target because they're using group invisibility, you'll love CoV.

CoH was once a great game. The additon of CoV/PvP has turned it into a steaming pile of feces. And CoV is just like CoH now.

Save your money. Wait for Marvel. CoH/V sucks.

Yes it will only cost you one monthly price of $15 for both.

Nice. So will I be looking forward to missions where I'm hurting innocent people and just doing evil for the sake of doing evil or is there some reason why I'm a villian in the game? I'm not going to be walking into a run down city fill with people treating me like scum just because I'm on the other side (Freeport in Everquest 2 was really annoying about this) or will the city be more neutral to me?

You will only see Heroes in PVP areas if you choose to ge there and at the new nightclub Pocket D. AT the nightclub you can't attack or be attacked and Heroes and Villains can do missions together from there, it's really a good time.

For the feeling, it is about right in this game.  Nothing like Freeport 8 years old attitude of a villain.  Some contacts will FEAR you, other will try to show you better not double-cross them, some will not care and just have the influence ready if you do this mission.  Some contacts will have a superior attitude (I have check you for a while and you might be able to...).  Really, it is contact by contact basic.

When you do a bank mission, you will overhear the security team saying stuff like:  "Hey, those sirens and the breakout, I heard it is Effect who is storming us!"  "Gash, this is just not right man!"  and so on...

Back to the original question.  CoV is pretty close to CoH.  If you would be hesitant to go play CoH again for any reason, than try CoV, it is worth a try.  If you would never consider playing CoH, maybe you should check a little more before trying CoV...the game is very nice.  But it is close to what CoH was.

Anyway, enjoy!  Personnally I would suggest you buy it but don't subscribe to long, you may very well be done with the game in 1 or 2 months, just like the first time you play CoH!  image  But 1 or 2 month...is a LOT longer than the average time I allow ANY MMOs.  image (EQ and CoH are the only MMOs I play more than a month, prolly more than half a year for CoH spreaded in like 4 differents subscribtion...and a few years for EQ)

TO answer a few of your questions:

Soloing: You can pretty much solo all mission except those with Elite Boss' or AV/Heroes. I predominately solo and team up maybe once every 6-10 missions.

Chat: You can now chat across servers using the global chat. City wide chat is called Broadcast and has always been there, I think you meant across servers though. Also super groups were given Coalition Chat witch allows you to chat across super groups. In addition you can also create your own chat chanel and invite people to participate.

Debt: The debt gained in missions has been cut in half. So being defeated in a mission earns you half the de debt you recieve on the streets.

lairs: Individuals currently can not have bases, but super groups can. There is talk that the development team is working on something for individuals or small super groups.

In addition to capes at level 20 there are no auras at level 30 and in the 40's you can get a prestige power pool in heroes (the equivilent will be added to villains with issue 7, when the level cap is increased from 40 to 50 for villains)

With the purchase of Villains you can play both games for one subscription cost. Though make sure both games are on the same accout.

With the addition of COV the game has dramatically improved since the last time I played.. I re-activated with apprehension, but now, I'm glad I did.. for one, to get away from SWG, well the NGE cured my addiction to that game. But COV and COH can now be solo'd. I remember I was unable to solo missions in the past, but depending on your power selection, it can be very easy to do.

CoH is really the best game for solo and casual play that I've found so far.  Now that people are used to cov there are plenty of people playing but not too many.  easy to get a group if you want it, but also very easy to solo.

CoV feels like "CoH in red" rather than a truly villainous game. The powersets are just mix-and-match versions of CoH's powers, with the exception of the Mastermind archetype. The game mechanics are the same -- for instance, if you didn't read the in-game text it would be impossible to distinguish between a "kidnapping" mission or a rescue mission. The "kidnap victims" even thank you at the end, just like rescued hostages. It's not a good thing when you have to rely on text to get the point across.

The PvP aspect is completely unbalanced, despite their best efforts at toning down all the powers. (The Issue 5 and Issue 6 nerfs, specifically the Global Defense Nerf and Enhancement Diversification.) The game simply isn't set up for it and I never participated in any PvP that was as compelling as the PvE game. There are a few powers that stand head-and-shoulders above the others, so there are a lot of flavor of the month characters dominating PvP. These will likely be nerfed soon for the sake of balance.

The game has improved with the launch of COV. The pvp is great fun.  Soloing is definately possible now.  That was a nice fix from before.  So far I am very happy with this game.  I would like to see more pvp maps, especially ones higher than warburg that have sides, rather than free for all.  which, free for all is fun also... but if I could put a wish list in, it would be for more higher end content, which I'm sure I'm beating a dead horse here. lol.
