Do you have any empirical data to back any of that up? Or is it, as I would suspect, statistically unfounded speculation based on your part, resulting from the knowledge of one (most likely unstratified) sample of society, that being the area/your school?
Popularity is of course, being liked. There is no formula per se, except for an attractive personality perhaps. It is all purely subjective. People can be none or all of what you have said above and still be popular. Simply, you cannot tell wether or not the guy is telling the truth or not, you simply don't have the data at hand to make that conclusion. Don't be so quick to jump on people, it's condescending to be perfectly honest.

Point is, that no, most popular people are not generally best looking ones... if anything (as I say in my experience, I lay no claim to any proof on the matter) those who take the greatest pride in their appearance in doing so give off a layer of arrogance or pretentiousness, something picked up on and disapprovingly looked on by all the people in my social circles (when I say social circle I mean school)

I'm an overweight out of shape ex athlete too. I play video games as often as I can find a good one and no longer party 24/7. My social life is also greatly reduced from my more outgoing days.

Like all things in life, there are compromises to make for doing the things you enjoy. Being a slob goes hand in glove with playing video games all day long. If I get bored or stir crazy I am perfectly free to go out.
No one says your school friends are going to remain your closest friends your entire life. You might find that your peers constantly evolve and change depending on your hobbies and work and situation throughout your life. Lives diverge, people lose common ground. No big deal.
Essentially, as long as you like people, you will make new friends anytime you are exposed to people. Making friends is easy, and losing contact with friends is not the same as losing friends.
I don't have much sympathy if you are fat, balding, three eyed, scar-faced or have acne. Whether or not this is something you can change, it's currently an integral part of who you are and how you are living. It's your personal appearance, wear it with pride, or crawl into a hole and die. It's your choice and yours alone.

The PROBLEM exists with gaming and ALSO with:
