Dark Age of Camelot and Eve Online!
Was very skeptical on joining Eve Online for my Sci Fi fix, but once I started to understand
the mechanics of Eve Online which took me 1 week and still learning today, this game is going
to be sick. If you got the time to invest and have a buddy that is just as curious as you are,
you will have fun.
Where does DAoC tie into all of this, well in the earlier stages of Eve Online, all you do is
train your skills, build your ship and run missions. Eve Online has alot of down time in the
beginning for me and Dark Age of Camelot helps me through. Esp the leveling system in
DAoC now.
Retired SWG Player and RnR from WoW..

EVE's a nice game but for me it's entirely too boring. It has great aspects but something about EVE just turns me off.
For my sci-fi fix I play Freelancer on a 256 player server.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

I think why some people do not get into EVE is that it is all about the ships. You have to spend a lot of time watching a screen as your ship travels. You have to grind through your skills at lower levels. It takes a huge amount of time to get into a position of doing some of the cool things you read about in magazines and on the web.
I was talking about the game with my girlfriend, any even if we did not play DAOC, we still would not have time for EVE because it takes way too long.
Not to say there is anything bad about the game, but just wants tends to put people off. I will say that EVE is about the only mmorpg that has been around for awhile that has a continual growth of population. It is slow a steady just like that tortise that beat the rabbit.
Only reason it's grown slowly over time is the only people that find out about it are those truely interested in the genre. Basically since it's not on store shelves there was never the mad rush of box sales to give huge initial numbers that would drop over time. For the most part people who register to play EVE are those that played the trial and liked it enough to purchase.
Whereas with WoW, EQ2, etc. a TON of people bought it, because it was on store shelves and looked cool and was advertized, etc. Thus huge initial numbers that went up for a while then begin to dip (trust me, WoW will eventually start declining) just like every other box shelf MMORPG. EVE doesn't have the box/shelf phenomena because the ONLY people who buy EVE saw it online, typically on a hard core MMORPG site or via word of mouth.
It'll continue to grow until the game 'ages out' or until something better comes along. Just like UO did. In UO's case nothing better came along, just the game became outdated and EA made some really dumb design decisions when they bought Origin.
EVE's a good game, if you have a lot of patience. For those who want a game that you can hop on, feel like you accomplished something and hop back off it is NOT a pleasant game to play. It's not a casual game either, it's actually extremely hard core. There are aspects that would make you think it's casual player friendly but in practice it's just not. "GREAT game... one of the best... but not for everyone" has always been my rating of it.
Though as of Wednesday I'm now getting my Sci-Fi fix beta testing Inner Sphere Wars (See sig)

For me, having tried EVE 3 seperate times, it's not about being patient or a question of how much I love Sci-Fi. It's about the grind and the sheer amount of time it takes for any meaningful advancement.
I've tried, I really have but I can not get into it at all. It does look beautiful though, that's for sure.
I just recently resubscribed to DAoC and mythic has done a great job with keeping the game freash IMHO. I've having a great time with it.
I do wish there was a Sci-Fi game out there that wasn't garbage or that I could get into. No, don't say AO either.
I guess I'll have to cross my fingers and wait for Star Trek Online or Stargate Worlds.
There isn't... yet... but there will be:
The king of Sci Fi is in Beta BattleTech "Inner Sphere Wars" is coming It's been a long time in development by a group of people from the hard-core BattleTech/MechWarrior community and is finally a playable (though very buggy) closed alpha/beta. Battletech community members get in as if it were an "open" beta but it's not really an open beta yet.
I can't wait for this one. A battletech game made by BattleTech players. HOO-AH.
