One game I'm particularly looking forward to is Seed, it gets coverage here, but nowhere near as much as, say, Vanguard.
So I'm thinking there has been a lot of "Help me choose a game, cos the last one sucked" threads lately and Seed does offer something different. Get this, no combat! Okay that's not all that is different, is Seed too Niche?
I'm not 100% sure this is true, but the game seems to have a low profile in the traditional large markets, USA and Asia. Note that Seed is digital download only, so in theory that shouldn't matter, but I'm guessing there may be some restrictions. I don't wish to knock any US or Asian publisher, but by and large, European support has been woeful: it has either been non-existent or if there is support it certainly feels like it is non-existent. To have a mmorpg developed in Europe is a rare occurence it seems, the only two that spring to mind are EVE and Saga of Ryzom. I don't want to turn this into a poor Euro support topic so back to Seed.
Apart from no combat, what else is different?
Have a read of this:
What Seed is all about
- Sci-fi MMORPG
- Personalized stories
- Social/political gameplay
- Believable NPC's
- 3D comic book graphics
What Seed is not about
- Combat
- Character classes
- Standard quests
The story is about a ship that travels 250 years from Earth to a planet (later named Da Vinci) in the Beta Hyi solar system: this ship is a Seed ship, hence the title of the game. Its purpose is to terraform new planets and colonize them. If you want to read the rest of the features and background story, check out their site www.seedthegame.com !
Come on why does Seed not even get its own forum on this site especially when it is so close to release?

Seed definately needs a lot more attention given to it. Afterall, its different from most other MMORPG's out there and on the horizon. I am definately interested in this title mainly becasue I am absolutely sick to death or fantasy. My only concern is the lack of combat.
MMOs like Seed and A Tale in the Desert show that MMOs don't have to be like the shallow kill and collect style gaming promoted by some of the big names. The problem is balancing the package to hold the players attention. One thing Seed and ATITD have is the ability to change the virtual world but with the lack of combat, lack of action, the danger is that the experience will become boring.
But a dynamic world, the ability to change the virtual world is something that WoW and EQ2 are sorely missing imo.

Past MMOs- Planetside, WoW.
Current MMO:
Current Games: L4D, Skyrim
Tried- ATITD, EQ2, SoR, Vanguard,SL,LOTRO,SotNW,SWTOR.
Anticipating- GW2, Planetside2
It looks good but i can't play with that kind of graphics. Simply I can't.
I thought that too, but i watched the movies and its not that bad. Plus I love the sci-fi premise and the backstory is great. So ill be keeping tabs on it.
Having followed Seed for a long time and being in the Beta Test I can give you some information.
Is Seed too Niche for a MMORPG?
It's all about expectations. If the people making Seed were expecting WoW subscriber numbers then they wouldn't even bother launching. They aren't expecting that. They are planning on a small, yet dedicated community.
"I can't play with those graphics"
One of the things the makers of Seed wanted was to get the game to have a comic book feel to it. Having played it, they did that. They did that incredibly well in fact. It looks and feels exactly like a comic strip, but in 3d.
As for why Seed has no forum? I'm not sure. I've asked for one before. And lord knows if they can give crap like Face of Mankind a forum they should be able to give Seed one.
Asking why seed is not being covered as much is like asking why there is like 5000 anarchy banners on mmorpg. I am not presuming anything here. But standard business practice and a good business practice at that is to often focus on those types of clients that will over the most revenue for your company. MMORPG is free for us to communicate and rate games and get previews and have writers dishing out articles. Someone has to pay for this. In that sense you would give that paying client a bit more attention then those that dont. It is a normal practice of business. I still give mmorpg props for still being as objective as they possible can be with in their circumstances
Faranthil Tanathalos
EverQuest 1 - Ranger
Star Wars Galaxies - Master Ranger
Everquest2 - Ranger WarhammerOnline - Shadow Warrior
WOW - Hunter
That's right I like bows and arrows.
They do have a forum. There's a decently sized button in a header bar that says "Forums". Can't miss it if you look.

It looks good and all, but what do you do?
I mean:
"Crafting
Create your own inventions to gain credits and glory."
Great. So, uhh....... why do you need credits and for that matter.... why do you need Items?
"Politics
Use the colony democratic system to put your ideas into action."
Great. Awsome. I'm all for it. But what is politics w/o war?
"Repairs
Keep the colony afloat by handling emergency repairs."
Repairing the colony! AWSOME! But what is there to repair if there is no wars? Wouldn't that just be considered maintence?
"Trading
The shortage on ressources opens up for extensive bartering."
Again. Why do you need credits if you don't need items and if you don't need items then you don't need crafting and therefore why do you need resources? To keep the colony going? K, well....... why are you keeping it going?
I'm not flaming.
I'm not trolling.
I just don't understand what the game is about, what is it's purpose? what do you do?
A Work in Progress.

The game evolves whatever way you want it to.

You can always relax.

But realise the colony isn't just there; everything you do has consequences.
It IS a hostile environment and you are on an alien world.

It's kind of tough to descirbe because there is little to compare it to.
Maybe this thread could help: http://www.seedthegame.com/forums/showthread.php?t=765
Asking what do you do in Seed is almost the same as asking what you do in Eve. It's entirely up to you.
Unless I'm missing something, I see no forum to discuss Seed.

Why do you need items? What do you think people repair stuff with? Takes tools you know. And you need credits to use machines to get things done. As well as points to learn skills faster.

Who says their isn't war? It's just not war with bombs and guns. It's war with information. Sounds silly? Well what sounds more fun killing someone with a gun or making it so everyone (including NPC's) thinks someone is a total idiot?

You didn't read the backstory I take it. The seed colony is on a hostile planet with limited resources. Things keep degrading and falling apart.

Why are you keeping the colony going??? So you don't die, duh!

Press the 'Community' tab...
Seed is going to be very different then any of the games that are currently on the market, and becase of this simple fact alone- I believe that it may not do well at first, but its going to find it's niche and when it does turn people into fans... they will be hardcore and loyal.
