Those were freaking amazing.....the one with the sail boat is ridulous
My question though is, do you think his parents were very supportive when he first started? I figured the conversation might have been a little like this:
Son: Mom, Dad, I wanted to let you know I have found my calling, I know what I want to do with my life!
Dad: That is terrific son, what is it...doctor, lawyer, professor?
Son: No, nothing like that, I want to work the streets all over Europe, you know travel and meet interesting people.
Mom: You are going to what??....You are going to work the streets, what is that...prostitution or something, or dear lord, what is your grandmother going to think?
Son: Moooom, I want to draw with chalk on the street
Dad: And you think that is better than prostitution.....
Mom: Shut up dear... are you feeling ok son?
Son: I don't care what you think, I am going to draw on the street with chalk...and make it look real. There is nothing you can do to stop me.

All his other ones are real so I don't see a reason why he would lie about that one. The reason why it looks so real is because it looks like he is standing behind the mound when infact he is on his knees. I bet if he stood on his coke bottle it would give a similar effect. He could also add another ripple in his water/boat picture and then stand on the ripple and give it another very realistic effect like he stepped in the puddle.
EDIT: I used to be really into magic when I was younger and when I was researching magic effects, I came upon this really old effect used before when cameras were pretty new. Magicians took advantage of the cameras and hired a Trompe L'oeil artist to paint a stool to blend it into the background (usually some random wall in their home) and to be basically invisible at a certain angle. Then the magician would climb up onto the stool and the artist at the correct angle would photograph the magician thus giving the levitation effect. The magician would show the picture to his friends and become Mr. Popular. I bet some magicians got creative though and found ways to incorporate it into a live show.
My memory is kinda fuzzy on the whole thing but thats pretty much it.
And so if you want to learn more about this type of art or just check out the other artists, it's called Trompe L'oeil.
