elvaan thief

Ok guys I've decided i'm going to be an elvaan thief. Now i'm thinking around level 20 maybe higher i'll pick up a support job as a Ranger so my thief can strike from fairly far away would this be a good idea? Also when i can go into the advanced jobs would it be better to be a dragoon or ninja (keeping with the stealth thing)

Elvaans make the worst thieves as they have very low dex/agi.  Subbing ranger really won't make you do that much dmg using a bow either as you're still capped at the thieves bow skill for your current lvl.

Basically, the majority of a thief's dmg comes from using sneak/trick attacks.  Sneak dmg multiplier is based on your dex and trick dmg multiplier is based on agi, therefore if you really want to be a powerful thief you're better off going mithra.  Ranger as main would be good if you actually would perfer to be a ranged dmg dealer but be warned, ammo is VERY expensive.

Dragoon and Ninja's are very different in the roles they play in a group.  Dragoons are strictly a dmg based class that is not ment to tank.  Ninja's on the other hand do fair dmg but can also be a very good tank if you're willing to spend the money for thier shihei (allows them to use thier blink ninjitsu).  Just understand that each casting of that blink ninjitsu uses up a component, a stack of 99 goes for about 6k gil.
