WAR - Warrior is an amazing job IMHO. Don't let this "Basic Job" fool you. You have the advantage of being both a Damage Dealer (DD) and a Tank. There are not too many jobs out there that can claim both. There are better tanks, and there are better DD's but a good WAR can keep up. There weapon of choice is the Great Axe, and Axe. WAR/MNK and WAR/NIN are good sub jobs to choose. WAR is a good job to start with. There 2 Hour ability is Mighty Strikes, each hit is a critical.
MNK - Monk is my favorite job. There is a level of cool'ness about being a bad ass like Jet Li. tactically MNK is a Melee DD and a darn good one at that. They also have reasonable defense, high evade, counter, and high HP that makes solo an option. MNK's fight with Knuckle, Hooks, and Claw type weapons. MNK/WAR is a good sub from level 1 to 75. There are two downsides of MNK, first is the high cost of equipment.. second is you will have to compete with other DD's for a slot in a PT. DRK, RNG, BLM etc. MNK is a very easy job to start with. THF - I just wrote some about THF in another forum post. They say everyone levels THF to get the Treasure Hunter ability. THF's job in party is two fold (aside from doing as much damage as possible) 1. find and pull a monster back to the party to fight. and 2. stick hate (or the monsters attention) on the tank. Its somewhat of a busy job and a fun job. THF is a hard job to start out with. 2HR is Perfect Dodge, Dodge all melee attacks.
WHM - White Mage is your basic holy man. They are also Teleporters, and with the /BLM sub job (and warp spell) they can travel better than any other job, this is important to realize this when starting a new char. If you start as WHM you can travel. White Mage is a rather fun job to play it is somewhat relaxed and you then to concern yourself with MP consumption over time, as your party cant fight if your out of MP. WHM has terrible melee ability and poor attack spells but they can solo undead somewhat. WHM/BLM or the less popular WHM/SMN are good choices but any spell casting job is a welcome sub. WHM is about average to start with. 2HR is Benediction, Heals all party members to max.
BLM - Black Mage is pure damage. They call them "Nukers" and the more BLM's in a party the better.. however BLM is not IMHO as fun to play as other jobs. But the damage you can unleash is second to none (until you run out of MP that is..) BLM is a hard job to start out playing. 2HR is Mana Front, Spells take 0 MP.
RDM - Red Mage has a really good set of skills, you get some combat skills along with some BLM and WHM spells. (and some of your own) It makes you well rounded however compared to others your second rate in combat and spell casting. That might bother some people playing second fiddle however RDM is a good job and it is a fun job to play. by Mid-game you'll get the Convert & Refresh abilities that are priceless, RDM's level fast because they rarely run out of MP and can restore others. RDM is a mid to easy job to start playing. 2HR is Chainspell, Spell cast time, and recast time is 0.
People may argue but I've played all the jobs mutable times to a certain degree. I think last count I took 22 jobs past at least level 20.
So I know how to start the game, WAR and WHM are good calls because the subs are useful to a wide range of jobs.. MNK is the fastest (at first, then it slows way down)
One thing also.. if your going to be a Warrior/Combat Job, play Elvaan or Galka, if your going to be a Mage Job play Taru, if you don't know what you want play (often the case) play Hume. You will thank me later..
