Africa the MMO

verdantrexverdantrex Member UncommonPosts: 100

Africa the MMO was announced last summer, but now the official site seems to have a lot more info:

http://www.africammo.com/

...including a trailer and a fairly detailed FAQ about the setting (13th century western Africa at first, other regions in already planned expansions), character types, etc.

This is an original setting and idea, and frankly... MUCH more interesting than just another vanilla-flavored (no pun intended, I swear) Tolkien/EQ-esque knock off.  African civilizations were at one time as mysterious, complex and as advanced as Europe or anywhere else... this game promises to deliver us to that amazing time.   Very cool.

When I posted the above, I hadn't yet seen the trailer, which is huge and took a while to download.  Now that I have... WOW !  That trailer has what appears to be in-game footage, including what looks like PVP dueling and live footage of what one of the cities looks like in motion.... and it's great!

Shouldn't that be enough for it to get its own section on MMORPG.com now?   I mean, I think a lot of the games currently listed don't even have trailers with that much good-looking in game content.

Africa is apparently already way more developed as a game than most people think (especially considering that I don't think most of them/us even know it exists!)

Very wild and kewl idea for an MMOG. Might be a nice diversion from the regular.

Cool idea. Actually tapping into the culture, and history of someplace besides Europe for a setting? Inconceivable! It still looks as if it will have a slight fantasy bent, but that's a good thing. They can tap into all kinds of legends, and folklore from Africa without resorting to elves, and dwarves.

The trailer is huge at almost 300 megs, but I'm dling as I type.

When people will pay others to play a game for them it might be a sign the game isn't all that fun.

Looks like a winner. Keeping it in the 13th century also helps the devs keep away from some serious historical messiness. I can't really see a game like this working in the same region during the 17 or 18 hundreds, for instance.

Yes, that's a good point... when I first read the FAQ, I didn't really have an idea of what level of "fantasy/magic" it would be (if much at all), but as the trailer shows, there will definitely be both magic, fantasy and monsters... though WONDERFULLY, not from either a European or Asian perspective.... and the artwork doesn't really bear influences from either of those (very broad) socialogical types.

I'm not black, but if this game is as much fun as it looks, I could easily see myself devoting a lot of time to playing in this world they're creating.  This and Age of Conan.

Yeah I just watched the video. I know good graphics don't equal good game, but it does look incredible. The fighting intrigues me.

Which is why it would be nice if MMORPG.com started tracking it.  I know they have a "two in game still" rule but I'd think they could easily just capture some of that footage from the trailer.

This game is *obviously* way more developed than many they cover...  I'm just surprised I was able to discover a game in such an advanced state that apparently almost no one in this community knew about !

Funny, that's basically the retort I was going to use!

I admit that statement probably does come off a little strange... all I really meant was that I was thinking I might have been coming off as too much of a cheerleader for the game and for some reason for a split second that made sense to me.  The analogy I guess I'd draw is if I found some awesome new "The Bible Online" MMO, I'd say something like "I'm not a Christian but..." or "Wild West Online" I'd say "I'm not really into cowboys but..."  But yeah, obviously, African culture is cool and does not just appeal to black people, so that was kind of *not* a perfect analogy or reasoning or whatever. My bad. : )

Anyway, hooray for them for finding inspiration for a MMO in a source that's different from the standard Tolkien or Anime or Sci Fi stuff.  "African fantasy" = rare = potentially great.

An intriguing setting and the trailer already looks quite polished. Gonna have a closer look at this one, I can't see another f'in Orc anytime soon.

Now that MMORPG.com has done their first preview of the game, I thought maybe I should give this thread a /bump.

It's a good idea but.... I don't think it will be able to compete with the other MMOs preferbly World of Warcraft. I have not yet seen the trailer but im planning on it some time in the afternoon.

It looks very cool. It's amazing how refreshing the Fantasy Genre can be if somebody opens their mind up enough to use something other than western Europe for the base of the world. I've seen it happen with a few single player RPGs (Jade Empire for example) but this looks like the first MMORPG to break out of the mold.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Rapid Reality going down the same path SOE are? Shovel out a bunch of MMO's and hope folks can latch onto one or two? Sorry, the very basic premisis of this thought process is failure. Make one solid game, not a bunch of shovelware crap.
