    Depth or not.
    Easy or not.
    Fluff or not.
    Childish or not.

Any game that can attracted over 5.5 MILLION people to spend money on purchasing their game initially AND THEN keep them paying on a monthly basis gets my respect.

Hate on it all you want, but Blizzard's World of Warcraft has rocked the MMORPG world.

They aren't keeping them though, that's the problem. I've seen the figures of how many ppl actually stay after 3 months and those who leave before 3 months and it's really bad actually.

If I can find the link, I'll post it.

I don't disagree with that. But they are also gaining subscribers as well, make sure that statistic is included in those figures or it's moot. Plus people come back, I personally know at least three people that have left and come back again.

I'm hoping to not be one of them but who knows what the expansion will bring.

EVE on the other hand is giving out 30 day free trials, I am taking advantage of that right now. Even after 30 days free I can already tell you that I won't be staying. EVE appears to be a great game, just not for me.

    probably DAoC.

people who tired on/quit wow hate it.

most people that i see that used to play DAoC are cool and respect the game and have fond memories.

Britney Spears record sales....Combined album and single sales topping 125 million in reference to wow's success showing that it should get respect.

How much respect would you give her as an artist? enough said. LOL i'm kind of working out of my norm right now. I usually write really long post but i'm taking the low road and posting a simple little one liner reply.

  • kovahkovah Member UncommonPosts: 692

If Britney Spears had sold the most copies of an album ever then I would respect her ability to get people to buy her stuff. I don't like her music, just like I no longer enjoy WoW, but that doesn't mean that I don't respect them for their ability to get MILLIONS of people to give them money.

I could care less if a game has 5.5 million subscribers or 500.  It's not going to get my respect just because of how many people bought it.  Big deal.  People are impressionable and marketing is just as big of an industry as game design.  Think about that.

I have a lot of respect for two games.  Everquest 2 and DAoC.

Everquest 2 is a very complex game.  It's got really unique quests, good combat, great immersive environment, and a ton of well thought out classes that are all fun to play.

DAoC is just damn cool.  You've got personal involvement through the realm system, well thought out classes, unique environments for each realm, and a PvP system like no other.  Nothing in the world could come close to touching that game in my opinion.  And I think that it's really cool that an underdog company like Mythic can still show the big boys how it's done.

Resepct is subjective. What one person respects another person might detest. That isn't to say you can't respect things you don't like, but not everyone respects WoW just because it is popular, and not everyone respects Eve because it is different.

You cannot deny that WoW is popular, or that Eve takes more chances with their design, but that doesn't mean you respect them.

When people will pay others to play a game for them it might be a sign the game isn't all that fun.

It's hard for me to respect a game like WoW.  How much respect can I have for a game that took all the great ideas that came before it and put a new shiny interface on top?

I tell you what.  You explain to me one thing that is unique about WoW and I'll give you the respect of reading it.  image

I'm not saying I respect WoW. In fact I was saying I don't have to respect it just because it is popular.

The one good thing WoW has done for the MMO community is make it bigger, and even this point is debatable.

I'm not sure if I can actually respect, or disrespect an inanimate object anyway. I reserve that for people.

When people will pay others to play a game for them it might be a sign the game isn't all that fun.

Guild Wars Baby!  Play Anytime, Play however you want, Play for Free!

If WoW would just lower their fees people would hang arround.  They should have a progressive pay scale.

Longer you stay, the less you PAY!

    2-4 Months   =  $19.95 a month.

    5-8 Months   =  $14.95 a month.

    9-12 months =  $12.95 a month.

    13-24 months  = $5.95 a month.

    25+   months  =  $1.00

    Yes yes,

I know im a GOD for figuring this system out..

    thats rediculous.

anyway, the game that has got my most respect are two games:

1: World of Warcraft. its amazing how Blizzard took everything good from other games, put it all in one and improved it. WoW was an unique experience for me

2: Ragnarok Online. I don't even know whats so good about this game, but it kept me addicted for 2 years.

As far as I am concerned its EVE.

The devs have a vision of the game and they are sticking to it.

I know that 6 months from now there will not be a CU or NGE.

except for the fact is isn't a MMO.
I don't really understand why so many ppl think this is an MMO when it doesn't even resemble it.

Oh btw..... how much did you pay for GW?!?!? It's still seling for $50 at wally world here.

DAoC.  I no longer play, but yes  .  .  .  I respect Mythic Entertainment, their original idea (RvR), and I had lots of fond memories when I played it.

WoW is a great MMO but after 4 months, I just couldnt justify the monthly cost.

Yep,  Guild Wars is still selling for the same price today that it did when it was released.  That in itself is worth some respect.    Now I dont like the single player instances just as much as the next guy, and that is the main reason it gets so much scoffing from the MMO hard cores on the message board but if it continues to make money for PlayNC we should expect to see more of them.

  • JackcoltJackcolt Member UncommonPosts: 2,170

GW doesn't even resemple an mmo. I think it does. The only thing that doesn't make it an mmo is that it's instanced. And that isn't a bad thing I my opinion. You also call it an RPG FPS? ... no. There are very few RPG FPS, it's games like Deus Ex, System Shock 2(imagine that with doom 3 graphics... then you could really get a good scare) and Arx Fatalis(somewhat) Btw it's not the general opinion that GW is an mmo, just a few people who doesn't know any better.

I don't really respect games. I respect developers. No MMO developer has gained my respect, except for blizzard, but that's for making Wc3x :D

EvE Online is the most respected game on market.

People that dont like it,knows that EvE have huge potential.

  • UmbroodUmbrood Member UncommonPosts: 1,809

I would have to say AC1 or EVE.

Not because many play them or love them, but very few seem to actually hate them.

To me that indicates, "Ok game but just not my style", and most seem to agree that they are good in their own way.

And it is not WoW one should respect for the awesome financial success that game is but rather blizzard who have found the perfect mix of what most people want, not uber good in any way but good enough in most all ways.

The success of Coca Cola has little to do with the actual drink and everything to do with how it is sold and marketed, as an example.

Its not EVE I know that much.

    Everquest Online Adventures.

Seriously. I played this game when it was released, and a long time after that before giving it up. Hell, I've been searching for a game like it ever since. I would still be playing it if it wasn't for doing every thing end-game, with multiple different classes.

Still a great game though, the only MMORPG besides FFXI that kept my attention span for more then a couple of months.
