I'm thinking of buying this gamebut I have a few Q's first:
How many expansions are there? I know there's a new one coming out so i'm just wondering how much I would have to spend in total to buy the game and all of it's expansions.
Would I need an expensive gaming computer to play this game smoothly? My current pc is a little dated because I quit playing mmos a while back but I took a look at the recommended system requirements and saw that they weren't that high. I'm just having a hard time believing that this game would run smoothly on what they listed for some reason .
Here's what they rec. system reqs are:
Recommended System
Operating System:
* Microsoft® Windows® XP
CPU:
* Intel® Pentium®4 processor
Memory:
* 256 MB RAM
Graphics Card:
* NVIDIA® GeForce3 or GeForce4 Ti series graphics processing unit (AGP) with 64MB of VRAM
Sound Card:
* DirectX®8.1 compatible sound card
Hard Drive Space:
* 6 GB free hard disk space
CD-ROM:
* 32x CD-ROM drive or faster (required only at installation)
Internet Connection:
* Always-on Internet connection
Other:
* Keyboard with 10-key numeric pad, mouse with scroll wheel
So can anyone confirm if the game will lag at all with these specs? I'm asking because these are roughly what my pc specs are at the moment.

2 expansions, Rise of the zillart and Chains of promotia. I think there is a special pack that sells full game + those 2 expansions.
no, you don't need a strong pc as the game is quite dated and was made so it could run on the playstation 2. it will run just fine on the system you mentioned
Thank you kind sir.
they used to have a benchmark for the game...
I'm sure its still out there somewhere
As someone else said, there are two expansions: Rise of the Zilart and Chains of Promathia. FFXI was released in NA bundled with Zilart, it was never sold as a separate package here. FFXI was released in the EU with both expansions bundled. In addition, the current NA release, "The Vana'diel Collection", also includes both; the old edition that didn't have Promathia is out of print and hard to find (as is Promathia sold alone as an expansion). So if you buy FFXI now, you should be getting everything.
FFXI will acquit itself fairly well on a pretty crappy PC. There's a benchmark at PlayOnline's home site which should give you some idea of how well your PC will do, look here: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/multimedia/download/bench/

There's also a new expansion coming out eventually, with 3 new jobs, and a bunch of other stuff that you'll probably want to access as soon as it comes out. It's called, "Treasures of Aht Urgan". No idea when it'll be released, but there's actually a lot of info out about it, so it should be pretty soon.
Your comp should be okay playing it, but you will probably have to turn down the resolution/detail/max objects on screen/etc. Just in case, run the benchmark tool, which someone already posted a link to.
