The next MMO to truly be FUN to play?

verdantrexverdantrex Member UncommonPosts: 100

There are many reasons to criticize WoW, but one thing Blizzard got right that a lot of other current MMOs miss is that, inherently, it is FUN to play.  There is a lightness, a sense of humor, and a joy to the gameplay that many other MMOs miss.  Where WoW feels "fun" to me, many other MMOs are boring, or too serious... they lack the goofiness that WoW has, the sense that it knows it's a game and doesn't take itself too seriously.  Pretty much every other game out there just doesn't feel "fun" to me... where's the silliness?

So, I think that is a huge question mark for the many games that are in development now.  Which game will step up and challenge WoW where it matters... the "FUN DEPT".   As I look at the many games coming in 2006-2007-2008, I'm seeing a lot of "grumpy gusses" (Age of Conan, Chronicles of Spellborn) and "Mr Serious MMOs" (Star Trek Online, Vanguard), but I'm not seeing many that have a spark of humor or levity.  Having said that, I anticipate many of the games I just mentioned... I just don't have a firm grasp on which ones will be fun to keep coming back to.  I *respect* serious games, but it's the light-hearted ones that keep me coming back.

So... which ones do *you* think will be FUN, with a capital F, U and N?  I ask because I really don't have a firm answer myself....

For overall fun, I have my eyes on Pirates of the Burning Sea. The enviroment is a much needed change, and definetly a setting that is under-used. It will feature a real world, real countries, and real ships. And wont be the simple 1 way street that EVE is, it will have ships and avatars.

Ah, actually... I do sort of have a few ideas of which games could be fun...

    1) Age of Conan *could* be a gruesome delight if it delivers the hard R gore that made Howard's stories great.

    2) Warhammer certainly has the visual kookiness of the classic figure/tabletop games... so as a predecessor to Warcraft, it might have that fun feel I'm looking for.

    3) Hero's Journey... I don't really know what the style fo the writing will be... could be funny?

    4) Star Trek... what made Next Generation great was its sense of humor... can they get it right?

    5) Africa... the trailer seemed to *maybe* have some levity?

    6) DC or Marvel... will these projects go for fun like City of Heroes or dark and gritty and "kewl" ?

Age of Conan is supposed to have drunken brawling as a combat style. How can the first MMO to implement getting drunk and hitting each other with chairs possibly qualify as "grumpy gusses"?

i dunno why people keep discounting tabula rasa.

i really think its going to change the way we think about mmo's

    Games i'm playing right now...

While the devs at Blizzard do have a sense of humor about their games I didn't think WoW was particularly fun to play. The two are not the same thing.

Age of Conan is set in a dark world, but drunken brawling ftw.

When people will pay others to play a game for them it might be a sign the game isn't all that fun.

Well, like I said in my second post, with a little thought I recanted my position on Age of Conan... I think it COULD be a really fun game, what with the ability to lop off limbs and decapitate your foes, the potential to have naked wenches (or boy toys if that's your thing) grovelling at your feet, etc.... I guess when I included it as a "grumpy gus" I was thinking more of the SUPER DARKNESS that the Conan mythos has... maybe I meant it's more grim than grumpy.

And the drunken brawling does sound like fun, yes.

Thats a good observation. It seems that most developers get caught up in the dark arcane energies of their sinister lore while expressionless avatars make sacrifices to malevolent dieties and dutifully grind a progress bar into the stratosphere.

Something as trivial as the goofy /dance animations in WoW made all the difference for me. There's a time for bloodspray and then there's a time for goofing off with people that you enjoy. And as soon as some smart developers start giving us funny little avenues of quirkdom, the more fun we'll have. . . Well, maybe not everyone. I'll have fun at least.

I guess that's one reason why I'm paying close attention to a rediculous little game by Webzen called Wiki. It's an upcoming casual MMOG that looks like it ripped of Zelda: Windwaker. Its from an Asian developer, so even if there is humor, some of it may be lost on me due to differeing cultural sensibilities. Regardless, I'm mostly wanting to see how a truly light-hearted MMOG plays out.

Fun is very subjective. I think Lineage 2 and EVE Online are fun. Others will think EQ2 and WoW are fun. Heck, I find this one persistent-world game that has only ~50 players to be fun. Asking people what the next fun MMORPG to be is like asking someone which singer will put out the next album that's good to listen to.

    Yes, yes... and I didn't flame Eve, now did I?  : )

All that being true, right now, of the major players, a lot more feel "gritty and serious" than have a light sense of humor somewhere within their story, is all I was saying.  I'm not *adverse* to darkness or whatever, in fact, some of the most "fun" movies or comic books can be quite dark, twisted even.

Humorlessness, however, can make any experience feel like homework, in my opinion, though. It can also make a game seem really pretentious. Seriousness has its place (don't worry, I won't be expecting tons of jokes if Steven Spielberg decides to make a "Holocaust Online" MMO), but most games should at some point actually feel like games.

Well, I was trying to make a point that fun is subjective. I didn't realize that your original post was about having humor in a game. Sorry for the post.

    Want fun?

Age Of Conan will be a blast! ::::24::::::24::

I have to admit,it's fun playing around with the emotes and laughing at the walking 'trees' the druids with Cenarion shoulders wear. :)

Even the monsters on occasion are humourous. The guy in ZG who yells DING! upon killing a player. And a reply says GRATZ! :)

Having said that, any game with a good social community can be more fun than WOW's 'fun' factor. EVE Online,in my free time I played (I am going to p2p EVE,but not until WOW is finished) made me laugh just from the chat.

I know that most people who hear this will think I'm stupid and retarded, but I can basically forgive any game with a bad storyline that has really good Graphics, SilkRoad for example, it isn't the best as far as storyline and game development goes, but the graphics are godly, and that just makes it so much more fun for me, just because of how beautiful it is to look at.

FlyFF is another game I like because of how good it looks, any game that I can say "woah, look at these graphics" about, I can enjoy. ::::28::

I'm pretty happy with how this thread is turning out.  So far, the consensus seems to be that WoW and Eve Online are both fun games that are already out, and that on the horizon, Age of Conan holds a lot of promise.  Exactly what I wanted to know. Yay.

And Ranma13... about not knowing in my original post that (part of) what I think makes a fun game is a sense of humor... following are some direct quotes (from myself) to remind you : )

"...a sense of humor... ...goofiness... ...silliness... ..a spark of humor or levity... ...light-hearted" : )

The chronicles of spellborn sounds like a blast to play to me. Fast twitch gameplay, a low amount of grinding and nearly completely quest based, with a pretty deep story.

Ok i can understand that those who play eve like it but compare wow with eve like you say most like wow or eve is bit fault.

    WOW 7MILLION players

    EVE 25k players.

And why so many talk about eve on mmoprg.com is becouse many are register here and wow fans in comparison not.

So it looks like many play eve to and thats false eve is very small mmoprg when we talk about subscribers.

Thats logic why wow players not many come here avarage intelct is low and age is 12 so they go to official forums and talk with kids there:P

But discus witch mmorpg is better is comparing appels with orange some like it some dont.

I know realy terrible mmo,s who still have fanbois even is one of wursths games ever:P

A game I forgot to mention in my original post is one that looked like a LOT of fun, with a good sense of humor, and it was sadly cancelled... Mythica.  Besides looking fun, it was also based on Norse mythology, which would have been a welcome diversion from all these games that seem to be based on a more 20th century mythology (Tolkien : ) (and yes I know Tolkien was inspired partly by Norse mythology as well as a lot of other Eureopean myths).

You actually had some good points untill, for some odd reason you needed to take a pointless shot at wow players.

I would laugh and agree with you, but just because your grammar alone shows that the intelect you said they lacked seemed to slip away from you as well. ::::28::
But as far as new games go, I just want to play 9Dragons, I am highly anticipating that game.

    -----------------------------------------

I would have let you slide; however, you mispelled "intellect" while making an argument about intelligence.

    ------------------------------------------

I would laugh and agree with you, but just because (poor sentence structure: ,but; ;just because; or because would have been acceptable. Unfortunatley, you tried to use all three at the same time) your grammar(thank you for spelling "grammar" correctly image) alone shows that the intelect(spelling: intellect. That's almost as bad as saying someone is "stoopud") you said they lacked seemed to slip away from you as well. ::::28::
But(Ouch, by adding "But" to the beginning of this sentence, you made it incomplete. You just went from making a solid "C" in my English Comp class to making an automatic "F") as far as new games go, I just want to play 9Dragons,  (Welcome to the botton of the barrell. You just put a run-on sentence at the end of your incomplete sentence. That makes you fail TWICE!) I am highly anticipating that game. (aww man, too bad you used a a comma in that last sentence instead of a period.)

    --------------------------------------

It sure is fun to use formal writing rules to make fun of people when we are using a completely informal chat system.

    Uhm... No.. That's just wrong.
Wow may have 7 million subscribers, though the last I heard it was 5 million, and hardly all those online at once. Eve has over a 100k subscribers, though there has been over 25k online at once. So you're numbers are incorrect.

Though you're right about everything else, Eve does have a really low subscriber count in comparison with other MMORPGs.
