Breakdown of the Top 5

SnaKeySnaKey Member Posts: 3,386

-----------------------------
EVE Online
Rating:
8.4

Guild Wars
Rating:
8.3

World of Warcraft
Rating:
8.2

EverQuest II
Rating:
8.1

Dark Age Of Camelot
Rating:
8.1
-----------------------------

Look at that, that's not a coincidence. I believe that the reason those ratings look they way they do, is because generally the people who know MMOs and have played multiple MMOs see that 4 of those are decent games.

EVE: beautiful MMO, even if it's not your style... if you know MMOs you can respect it. It's not cause there are alot of EVE Fanbois on this site, it's because the ppl who come to this site know games.

GW: Tactically Great. Not an MMORPG, but still a great multiplayer game that doesn't fit in any catagory.

WoW: Crap. The sheer number of players put it at #3.

EQII: Tried EQ 1, never played this one. But if it's anything like EQ 1 it does have pretty good game mechanics.

DAoC: Deserves #2. Not as beautiful as EVE, bust still a beautiful game.

Those ratings have nothing to do with the quality of a game. All these people Blizzard claims they brought to the genre are idiots and they clutter up the internet with more nonsense than anybody has ever seen. The genre is at a new low, and so polls like these should just be avoided.

    I kinda agree.

EvE is a good game for player who do NOT have large blocks of time to play (ie non insomniancs or those who don't get 3 days off a week....I fall into both ><). But I love the EvE economy, it is simply the best I have ever encountered.

WoW...well after farming things in MC, ZG and other instances all I can say is WoW offer a population at any hour. It isn't really a bad game, but it isnt great either. They play upto 60 is a lot more fun than at 60, or getting a new char to 60...

DAoC, well his came has created a few thing for the genre, but is dying out. It is a fun game, but the population is just not there for the dev team to bother really imporving ATM.

Heck lets add FFXI to the mi. IMO it should be there. The subjob system is great, but grinding in the game is hideous unless you are in a PT with friends. Catch-22. But, the story is amazing overall, if you can stand the grinding to get to endgame.

    beyond that...opinions pleas.

If I gave 2 shits what CCP thought of me, I would post this in their forum. The only Dev I ever "sucked off" was one of the creators of UO and the creator of Dransik (Ashen Empires now) because that was the game that got me into MMOs in the first place, and it was mearly a thanks to introducing me into the genre... then he f'ed up the game.

This isn't about EVE. This is about MMOs in general. I love MMOs, not just EVE... I love the whole genre. EVE just happens to be the best one out ATM and as one of the posters on this thread is the best game for ppl who can't play 24/7 becuse it's geared twords adults w/ jobs. I work 40hrs a week and go to school 18.

I really do not get it, what is so good about EVE?
I look at the screenshots and all I see is really detailed space ships, I do not see characters, I do not see anything of any interest..

EvE is really about connections to others. The economy is great since it is based on createing a few favored parts for shipe lost/destroyed fairly often. The more someon buys from you the more you chit-chat etc etc etc = mre business ora bigger corp. In many ways EvE has an amazing MMO feel, but failes in the time involved to do anything (lieral time passing, but play time).

BUT..OMG...A well run fleet battle makes any otehr "MMO faction war" seem tiny tiny tiny.

But again, EvE is a catch-22 for all it offers it has quite a few thigns holding ppl back, which just frustrates me.

That is so true, DaoC deserves more than WoW I reckon, but wow is younger and DaoC is older.

I find it very funny how the OP seems to consider EQII and DAoC decent games while WoW is "crap" when all these games shares a great deal of similarities....

It kinda invalid your whole argument.

I mean, EQ II and WoW design concepts are the same: Mostly PvE game with focus on questing. Raid as end-game. WoW has PvP, EQII added it recently only on pvp specific servers, but in the PvE areas, they are similar.

The differences are in the details, of course, in the graphics and some game decisions (like seamless world VS zoned world), but the core of those two games is the same, still you find eq II to be "worthy" of your attention while WoW isn't? I wonder why.

DAoC is like the spiritual predecessor of WoW. The influence of Mythic's game on WoW is evident in how things work and click. Yes, WoW do not have a RvR system to speak of, but the game mechanics are a refined version of DaoC. Differences? of course! but not so big to consider one game awful and the other wonderful.

EVE can only really be accurately described as a space simulation. A lot of people start playing EVE expecting a space version of Everquest or any other traditional MMORPG and are met with something that's completely different. Rather than being able to jump into combat within 5 minutes of entering the game, you actually have to spend quite a bit of time buying items and configuring your ship. Also, the long travel times and lack of any really interesting environments turn off a lot of people.

Hence why I say it's more of a space simulation than anything. Activities such as transporting and mining are pretty boring, but so are real-life activities such as truck driving. Rather, those that play EVE and enjoy it are those that look at the end goal rather than what they're doing at hand. You don't go to work because you necessarily enjoy the job, you do it because you look forward to the big paycheck at the end.

Likewise, this reason can be exactly applied to why people enjoy grind games like Lineage 2. You grind and grind and it's boring, but the end result is the awesome PvP.

Well when it comes to WOW i find that its just stupid.

Naturally when WoW has the most players. More then all those put together. So ofcourse it will come out strong.

Same with the "Game of the Year" awards were WoW won. Its just lame. All the little farting kids jumping up and down voting for there game. Screaming and point at the other guys face when they win.
    Its humbug.

One thing people seem to forget that sheer numbers do not dictate the success or quality of a game. For example, World of Warcraft has many many subscribers. Is it a good game? I believe so. Though it has game elements that are displeasing to some, on the whole it's a very well thought-out, polished game. Bashing World of Warcraft simply because you do not like the game is like bashing sports games when you do not like sports games. Just because the game is not to your preference, that does not necessarily make the game bad. Going back to my point, how many people do you think play Diablo? Now, how many people do you think play Neverwinter Nights? Just because more players play Diablo, does that make Neverwinter Nights a bad game? Relating it to MMO's, just because 6+ million players play World of Warcraft, does that mean EQ2 with its 250K+ players is a bad game?

Please, people, learn to recognize the difference between a game that you do not like playing but still acknowledge is a well-made game, and simply a bad game.

Why is it when something is popular it has to be knocked down? Do I smell jealousy? I'm not a WoW fanboi, but if you knock one of the greatest mmorpgs in recent years, if not one of the greatest games, then you are blinded by your own views.

  • Ranma13Ranma13 Member Posts: 747

It's human nature to try and make others feel the way we do about something. If I don't like a restaurant because they gave me bad service, I will want to tell my friends about it too and convince them that it's a bad restaurant, despite how it really might be objectively. Combine that with the 'not-so-brightest' in our society on the forums and you get the end result.

well, i really find that statament really shortsighted. so, McDonalds is the best food place, and Da Vinci Code the best book, and Jurassic Park one of the top 5 movies on history, and Spice Girls one of the best music groups. wait, maybe it is the backstreet boys. Coca Cola is the best drink, and windows the best OS.

need for speed underground must be the best simulator. who gives a damm about live for speed. NFSU is much more popular, and sold millions of copies. about strategy, Age of Empires III is the pinnacle. the best strategy game ever.

of course, since she is so popular, kournikova must have been the best tenis player on history. and since beckham sells five times as many t-shirts as ronaldinho, he is a much better player.

6 million players show a market trend. Businesses like to capitalize on market trends. Make a product that appeals to 6 million people, or make a product that appeals to 100,000...you do the math.

#2 Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope ---- Total US Gross: $460,998,000 (ok)

*note it's the same rankings world wide for those 3... I just can't find the site atm.

well, we are really not talking about business, are we? i agree WoW is a huge business. an incredible and profitable business.

but we are talking (at least i think that is what the OP wanted) about quality of games, not rentability or neat profit. and i was just trying to point out (sorry if i was too unclear) that popular and big do not always equal better quality.

WoW is not crap. It's though a game developed to just capture you in the beginning of the game, it is truly a game I bet most game developers could do, since it has nothing advanced in technology, but what they have gone for is pure casual gaming experience.

Though I also kinda dislike WoW going on the top lists since there are so many other games that deserves it better just because WoW has the most people.

WoW has gone to become a mainstream MMO, since so many play it even more wants to peek in just to get to know what the hell everyone is talking about. I believe there is where most of the idiots are sucked into the now already awful community...

So it is okay to say World of Warcraft is crap, but not okay to say EVE is rubbish? If it was the other way round would we all be saying EvE online is crap? I'm merely saying World of Warcraft gets dismissed as a shit game just because it is popular. THAT is short sighted and asinine. It's an easy target to knock just like all those other products you mentioned. All you gave was a half-arsed rant, maybe reply with something more constructive next time?

that is where you are wrong. WoW does not get dismissed because it is popular. It gets dismissed because it is a shallow game. because there is no innovation, because there is no endgame, because the economy is rubbish, because crafting is rubbish, because level/classes advancement is rubbish, because PvP has got no real meaning and no consecuences.

its got nothing to do with is popularity or succes. it has got to do with the quality and depth of the game.

UO was popular, the Rolling Stones and the Beatles are popular, The Godfather is popular, and Romeo and Juliet, and Morrowind and Baldur's Gate. you dont see many people bashing them, do you? because they are popular, but they excel at their own category.

so it is the other way around. people dont dismiss WoW because it is popular. it is more like WoW fanbois defend their game saying that it has got 6 million subscriber, and thus it must be a good game.

so yes, WoW is the best MMORPG, just like beckham is the best football player. so many chinese buying t-shirts cant be wrong.

Unfortunately, you are being swayed by personal opinion. Statements such as 'the economy is rubbish' and 'crafting is rubbish' are nothing but personal opinions. There is an entire demographic out there that enjoys the no-consequences PvP, simple crafting system, fairly steady leveling, and 'shallow' gameplay. Do not push your personal opinions as facts. You do not like World of Warcraft because you do not like its gameplay, but that does not mean it is crap. I really, REALLY hate Halo and cannot for the life of me see how it is so popular...BUT I do not call the game crap.

A slightly better argument then you gave before. You actually gave reasons behind your thoughts, although pretty weak ones, rather than spewing them out like some WoW hater. I just wander if EVE had 6 million subscribers whether someone like you would just knock it simply because it is the top dog at the moment.

Perhaps if you actually played World of Warcraft you'd give a more solid rebuttal then "this part of the game is rubbish, and this part". Like the OP you instantly shove WoW aside for almost no reason at all. Here is a question for you, if WoW wasn't popular would EVE get so many new subscribers?

  • VolkmarVolkmar Member UncommonPosts: 2,501

There are subjective and objective values to any game.

Leaving the subjective values behind, WoW (And EVE for that matter, at least nowadays, it was practically unplayable at release and that is why it got so low on gamespot for example) is a greatly done piece of software. You might not like the graphics, but it is undoubtly work of a talented and passionated group of artists, you can see the hours and hours of work and love the artists used for it.

Same can be said for all other parts of the game, you can agree with what they did or not, but is undoubtable that the devs had their ideas clear on what they wanted done, they delivered on it and were dedicated and professional in their doing.

That is why having a horde (not so hordish after all) of rabid haters makes little sense. You know? hating things like Horizons (that got gutted in half development cycle and it showed at release) , SWG NGE (that is definitly lacking a core... and they pissed off a good 80% of the player base) i understand, but WoW? The only reasons so many people bash it, is because of its popularity, nothing more. It is a game catered to casual players (at least 1-59), not the latest quinquennial US plan for world domination. If WoW would have the level of players of DaoC, there won't be any such vocal "opposition".

After all, we have seen it before, haven't we? I am guilty of it too when i was younger. It happens in sports, TV Shows, movies.... and so on. For example it happened in my own Italy, that one of the football team, Juventus, won the italian championship. Now Juventus is the italian team that won the championships more time than any other (and by a long shot at that too), you can be sure there were tons of people of other squads (me included, i liked Inter Milan at that time) bashing them, accusing of cheating or dirty playing just because they were the top squad...

I believe we see the same thing here.

Now peace to all and have a lot of nice days.

"If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime"

World of Warcraft is a better game then EVE Online and its safe to assume this is a fact. why do I say that? on every site that publishes reviews made by people who know what they are talking about (For example, gamespot) WoW is higher rated then EVE. on these kind of sites or even magazines, amount of subscribers don't matter, neither does the history. WoW is just a lot better then EVE. Blizzard put a lot more time and work in WoW then CCP did in EVE and you can clearly see that. sure you can say "I don't care about what proffesionals say and blablabla"good for you, but at least they know what their talking about, your just a biased EVE fanboi.

WoW tried to put all the positive aspects of MMORPG's in one and it had succes. boring things like long mining, long downtimes and hours of AH browsing were removed.

EVE put all the negative things of MMO's in one and it wasn't such a succes. sure it makes profit but its medicore at best. long downtimes, boring endless mining, and endless AH browsing.

the result is a medicore 100k subscribers which took them 3 years to get, while WoW has 6 million subscribers. true, the brand, but people will follow a brand till a certain limit. if its still bad, they really won't stay with it. many people think things like Music and Clothes give status to someone, Games don't. simple

the ratings on this site are a biased piece of crap. WoW is populair, but there has never been a game that has been hated more. and it seems this site is crawled by EVE fanbois who think EVE is the second comming. most people won't even bother rating EVE because nobody even heard of it. "Oh I didn't like Wow and wtf its rated number 1? gotta give it a 1 to turn it down!" what simply doesn't happen with EVE, hence the reason its no.1 here.

the amount of subscribers in EVE is pretty poor in this golden age of MMO's. lets not come up with things like :"Eve didn't had the hype and not enough advertising" because EVE is advertised on every corner of the web and has a 14 day free trial going.

sure you can call me a WoW fanboi, tough if you look at my sig you will see I don't play it anymore (yes, its natural something gets boring after a year *gasp*) but at least I reconize quality when I see it. oh and lets not bother comparing things like music and food/drinks popularity to Games. those are completely diffent things and can't be compared to the mmorpg market. so go back to playing EVE.....oh no wait you can't yet, you still have to travel for 20 minutes, and wait 3 more hours till that skill is learned
