WAR should generally use two-handed axe (but note that the lowest level two-handed axe, Butterfly Axe, requires level five to use!). One-handed axe + shield is also doable. Please don't use a sword. WARs who use swords make baby Altana cry. Note that when you roll up a WAR character you get given a sword as your rookie weapon. Replace it with an axe as soon as you have the money.

When you select a mob, /check it. It'll tell you the mob seems to be "too weak to be worthwhile", "easy prey", "a decent challenge", "an even match", "tough", "very tough", or "incredibly tough". (Notorious Monsters (bosses) always /check as "impossible to gauge" even though if you're fairly high level many NMs are in fact quite easy) Keep after the easy preys and decent challenges and you should do OK (too weaks don't give you any experience, and the even matches and above are likely to be a bit much for you).

As you advance, you should be able to move deeper and deeper into Ronfaure to find tougher mobs to level against. When you get past level 10 you should consider going to the Valkurm Dunes and start levelling in parties. Dunes is generally good until 20, and with luck you should pick up the quest items for getting your subjob at 18 (Magicked Skull may be a bit tough). At 20, you'll need to go to Jeuno to get your chocobo license, which will be good training on avoiding aggro. From 20 to 25 you'll level at Qufim Island. At 25 you need to get your Khazam airship pass (a friend is helpful here, although I did manage to do mine solo, and only died once :-), and from 25 to 30, you'll level in Khazam.
