One the one hand Wow has broken in a new element of gamers into paying monthly subscriptions. So in this way it has helped other developers. On the other hand it took lots of their business so it has hurt them. It has also added a level of content and speed of content addition that other developers are unable to match. So it hurts them here too.
However it also provides a fantasy get mega rich model, that will lure new investment to developers so it helps in this regard.
.
Wow has really raised the bar technically for MMO programmers. This is game is fantastically accessable. The no.1 reason for this is the interface. Also add the AI, the crash free servers, the buglessness, the quality of the art. The games theme and humor. People say WoW is simple, but it isn't. It is the most complex coded MMO of them all. In a league of it's own, the next generation.
Any new game is going to get compared to WoW for a few years. This is the new standard in functionality that MMO's have been set. Hopefully, from my point of view, further developments of similar standards to Matrix Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online and Auto Assault will get canned long before they see the light of day from now on. Or even better be forced to launch as budgetware.
On the whole, WoW has been very bad news for shoddy developer and very good news for consumers.
