Standard servers: Pretty much like any game. Can talk about whatever (Unless its against rules), have whatever name you want, etc.
RP: No talking about real life things unless all parties agree. So no saying "brb, going to get a coke" and so forth. Usually they require names that fit in with the theme. Can go OOC in private, but not in public. And like he said..."u r dum" isn't going to be on a RP server.
I generally like RP servers, not for the the RPing itself, but for the fact that they usually have more maturity.
"Role-playing" is such a joke in MMOGs, they might as well suck it up and remove RP from the MMORPG abbreviation. "Thou-shouting" isn't roleplaying. But that seems to be what most people consider to be RP.. which is really amusing considering I play sci-fi MMOGs and still see "hail and well met" and "thou" and all that crap. Even if I played fantasy stuff, "thou-shouting" doesn't constitute role playing. Actually getting into a character.. trying to think like that character would think and acting appropriately over a wide range of contexts, even if you wouldn't act that way in real life, (especially if you wouldn't do that in real life) is more along the lines of roleplay.
My best example is a character I played in AD&D First Edition, in a campaign run by a DM who used some of the supplemental rules (for saints, among other things) from Dragon Magazine. The character started out as a male, chaotic good Elf.. and ended the campaign as a female, neutral evil Elf. He/she was a mage/cleric, and so singlemindedly devoted to following a deity that s/he went through extraordinary means to be more like her deity. (Hel) Now, if you take into consideration that IRL I am almost militant about my Atheism, and compare it to a cult-like religious fanatic character that I pretty much became the center of the campaign through my roleplaying, THAT'S my measuring stick for whether or not these games are RP. Guess what.. even with a lot of leeway between my measuring stick and the virtual-reality of these MMOGs, they all fail.
Computers just aren't a great setup for "true" roleplay. It isn't the fault of the players.. I'm sure many of them really want to be roleplayers.. and in that respect, give 'em a little credit for trying. It's just so by-the-numbers here in comparison to a good pen-and-paper RPG campaign. (yeah, we had expanded rules and what not, but the DM rarely had to actually hit the books to keep things going. I give him credit, he was a master storyteller.. and I truly yearn for those days because we all had a LOT of fun in whatever we played) These games all devolve into who can get the best equipment the fastest.
For those who might come back with a flame on this and tell me to do better if I think I can.. well.. I DO think about these things. If I can find a way to make things mroe immersive/RP without sacrificing the games, I will. I'm not shy about contacting developers when I think I have a chance to make a significant impact.
yes it is impossibal to make a mmorpg as role playing as when you play at home .. hey i know i well never see roleplaying in MMORPGs like i see to live-roleplay in the real world. but i like playing on the roleplaying server's becorse it is just a littel closer and som times you meet ppl that play in out really good.
another reason i play on em is the fact that all the leet dr00ds are not there, and i dont have to look at chas running around with names like bigtits and MeSmakU.
and i dont thing you well ever see the lvl of roleplaying that you are talking about befor we have True VR.
truthfully there will only be true role playing when we jack into the net and become our chars. there is no way through typing that truly excelent rping will ever emerg. spooken is much better or hay how about everyone using teamspeek while playing on a rp server that might help. but not everyone has a high end comp or connection to use it seems like the only people that like rp servers to me are the ones trying and just having fun with it i very rarely find a person that always stays in char on a rp server.
Comments
Not necessarily ye olde english, but using proper grammar to whatever it is you're roleplaying.
Basically a good rule of thumb is, if you wouldn't see someone say "LOL omg dude hahha" there, it's a roleplaying server.
