Has this game become more new person friendly since C4?

TangogulfTangogulf Member UncommonPosts: 58

Hi all;

Just reading a post on gamezone that was pretty favorable of C4. The reviewer stated:

"restarting the game as a newer player proved to be a rather easy-paced and enjoyable experience,"

Im wondering:

1/ if things have become a little easier for the new player since C4

2/ If the PvP is open even to people of your own side/race?

3/ Is the point and click interface hard to get used to after using the WASD interface that is exlusive to most other Mmorpgs?

The game looks so dang beautiful. The stories I have heard from people who like the game sound very much like my Eq experience when it first opened up. I loved and hated that game. I hated the difficulty, the penalties for death, the lack of money. I quit it so many times that I cannot count them. That game is done for me, but I have yet to find a game that provides such a memorable experience.

hi, i'm a new player to L2. been playing for almost 1 month now. previously i had been playing ffxi for the past two years. i can try to share my experiences and answer some of your questions as best i can.

1/ if things have become a little easier for the new player since C4
starting as a new player in a new game was overwhelming at first and all the horror stories i heard before were scary about L2. you know what though, it was quite easy. as a new player i got free buffs from npc. noob zones were kinda empty, so many mobs to kill. was only pk'd once in my whole month. i quickly lvl'd and was outta starter town. getting gear wasnt too bad. just sold all the drops i got in bazaar eventually i had ok gear.

2/ If the PvP is open even to people of your own side/race?
pvp is free for all. can attack anyone anytimne pretty much except in towns and safe zones. so dont like someone, can gank him, less he ganks you back :P

3/ Is the point and click interface hard to get used to after using the WASD interface that is exlusive to most other Mmorpgs?
playing ffxi, i was use to using control pad so going to mouse point and click was scary at first. but after an hour it was way better. so cool to chill play with one hand smoke with the other^^

yeah this game is jaw dropping gorgeous. i think all the bad press this game gets is undeserving. its changed quite alot from prelude. its only 20 bucks. give it a try not much to lose cept your time

check out this raid vids i found for whats in store at end game for you if you survive your journal and dont burn out

    Hey Tangogulf,

I've been playing L2 on and off for about 6 months now (work keeps me from playing straight) L2 is not that hard at all at first, in fact levels 1 - 20 go pretty fast. I think new to the game it took me a week or two (?) There are all sorts of Newbie programs...free buffs in the starter town if you are new to the server, a really good starter weapon if you do the quest at about lvl 10 that will last you to lvl 20 or so. All in all the starter is very easy. (do your homework on classes before you hit level 20 when you pick your first class)

Its totally open PvP. There are no "sides" like in DAoC or WoW. Sides are Guilds. Its a strange game though...most of the "real" PvP is happening at higher levels. That doesn't mean you won't get ganked but its going to happen a lot less then you would think. Be careful about who you pick fights with, if you go "red" (chaotic, for killing other players) you will be attacked by the town guards and everyone has open season on you.

Point and click is a little tough to get use to but its so much easier then using keys. If you played any sort of other RPG, its the same thing. (NWN, Diablo, stuff like that)

The graphics are incredible and the music is captivating also. The world is large and there is a HUGE variety of mobs and places to hunt. Lots of events to keep you busy also.
So whats the catch you ask??? L2 has the toughest economy in any game I have played (and I tried them all image) Level 20 - 25 is about where your money problems will begin. There is also a problem with cheaters (bot users/3rd party money buyers) Its about the same level as the gold farmers in WoW.

The key to L2 is being social and making friends. Although you can "solo" most classes, if you are a loner, you are doomed in L2 to be broke and prey for just about anyone who feels like whacking you.

Lets try this for the third time! I typed up to long responses to your replies only to have both of them disappear into vapour!

Thankyou both for the replies: I appreciate informed replies like the ones you two provided.

    Cruets

Any reason why you left FFXi? It is one of the Mmos that I'm currently evaluating. What did you like and dislike about it.

    Torak

I have read a few of your posts on this L2 board. All I can say is that, all L2 players are as articulate and reasonable as you are, this would be an easy choice. But alas, I do not think that is the case!

Frankly, I have struggled with all Mmorpgs since eq. That game sucked me in, and yes, I hafta say that the difficulty of it in the early days was a part of it. I have never found its replacement and I have been looking since around June 2004.

-I have tried eq2, did not like it because I found it bland, but am thinking about trying it again since the implementation of Pvp
-obviously thinking about L2, but am concerned about the difficulty and grind.
    -considering Ffxi as well.

One thing that I have noticed in all of these games is that they are all difficult to solo in. I have run into so many bad, immature, greedy people in Mmorpgs that I have developed a bad soloing habit and a tendency to turn general chat off just so I dont have to listen to the ridiculous and petty rivalries going on.

I know that I have to break this habit.

I would go out and buy L2 immediately, but I'm trying to make an informed choice here. If I had my way, I would run all three of the candidates and see which I liked best. But alas, my wife although very tolerant would draw the line at me running 3 different mmopgs at once!

Can either of you comment on the suitability of the interface (eg autofollow) and game play for trying a separate L2 account on a different computer. I found a little utility called multiplicity on the net that makes switching between two computers very easy.

    Thanks again.

  • TangogulfTangogulf Member UncommonPosts: 58

    Oh yea, one more question:

    1. How important is the manual. If I buy, I may just get a key from direct2drive as opposed to buying the game. But if the manual is important I'll buy the game
    2. Is there anything special about the collectors edition over the regular edition?
  • cruetscruets Member Posts: 9

oh, i havent left ffxi, not yet anyways. i still play, but after 2 years i have done everything there is to do. gotten all gear i can get. most of my time i spend playing mmos is devoted to L2 at the moment

i dont think you'll like ffxi. its all about pve, camping raid bosses, almost zero soloing. need groups for everything. and the pvp is weak. arena pvp only no consequences for your actions.

    Cruets;

Thanks again for the other reply.

As I peruse the reviews from a few years ago, ffxi gets way better marks then L2. You are currently playing both games, so your opinion is of immense value to me here.

Clearly both games interest you. Is there a preference? If so why?
What are the good points and bad points of both to you.

    thanks again

    Well mainly the reasons are:

    1) Like you said, "a few years ago" MUCH has been added on. In Chronicle 3. the update was mainly for making it easier to level (hence the free buffs and soul/spirit shots available. Plus you can trade in your No Grade weapons to upgrade instead of having to spend time trying to sell them to the little amount of people using them). Also, there came group bonuses which helped a lot. Don't get my wrong though, leveling is still hard but not as hard as before (trust me, in Prelude, took me 2-3 months to get my character to level 20 lol. But after Chronicle 3, I got a character and leveled him from 1-22 in one week!)

    2) Lineage 2 is a Open PvP game with pretty harsh penalities (XP loss is pretty harsh considering it may take a while to get back, you can only lose items I believe by monsters unless you are red)

    3) Lineage 2 takes time, just like Everquest. You can play casual (like I) and still have fun though because there are raid bosses, PvP, etc. for mostly all levels! You just have to find them.

    4) There are many Adena Farmers, but these are in EVERY MMO. People just seem to highlight it in Lineage 2 the most because adena means A LOT in this game.

My Opinion on whether to try it out:

If you are interested in a PvP world full of spectacular graphics that really makes you feel like you are a part of the living breathing world. The politics can be fun to engage in but watch out as you may just have become an enemy to half the server but lucky for you, your side will hopefully help you out. Lineage 2 is not some carebear place where you are able to prance around in your Wooden Set (BTW I believe this gives you some HP bonus image) and think you are able to kill anyone. You must be watchful at all times as you know never know when you will be whacked upside the head.

Complaining about getting killed or losing something will get you little to no where. Doing something about it by getting a group together if there is a Pker or asking someone to help you will get you farther.

    Tangogulf

you are never going to know unless you try itimage

Its the sort of game either you love or hate. People who go in looking for "easy" mode or don't understand that it is open PvP hate it. Griefer and gankers dont like it because you can't just kill anyone you want when you want. Loners and people like that don't like it because you really can't get anywhere with the economy on your own. If you need a challenge look no further. Like I said in an eariler post, L2 was the last game I tried but turned out to be the best for me. (I've been playing MMO's for about 3 years now)

L2 has some serious death penalties so beware! I alway suggest you look at a few sites about L2. The leveling gets pretty hard later on and even has deliberate "walls" built into about every 5th level after 40.

Will it "replace" you lost feelings from EQ? Probably not because its not EQ and nothing ever will. Is it a good game experience? sure is if you understand what you are getting into.

Always remember, L2 is a harsh mistress.... its made deliberately to be difficult on EVERY level. From death to leveling to PvP to leveling to the economy - its hard. Just when things are looking up, some asshat will kill you and you will drop a piece of armor....*sigh*

*manual question - its nice to have but you can figure everything out if you read the "new player" section of the website

    http://www.lineage2.com/

edit - FFXI, I played it about 2 years back (?) and at the time it was a forced grouping type game. No soloing was really possible. (Unlike L2 image) I didn't really like it.

    Tangogulf,

Let me say that I have never hated a game so much as I have hated Lineage 2.  On the other hand I have never loved a game so much either.

I started playing MMO games when EQ was first released, then switched to Star Wars Galaxies when that came out.  I tried the L2 beta and have been totally hooked on the game ever since!  Taht's 2 years now.

L2 is a hard game!  It can be very frustrating at times as has already been illustrated by others.  On the other hand, since nothing is given to you by the game, there is a real sense of pride in accomplishment.  I still vividly remember the first time I was able to buy a piece of D-Grade gear, and I have many such memories.

Unlike some people, I love the sense of danger when I adventure, I love the sense of accomplishment, and I love the depth and diversity I find here that I have not found elsewhere.

If you are still looking around for your game, I concur with what anaother poster said, you'll never know unless you try, so, come on, you know you want to! ;)

You can be a loner in L2 and do well.

I probably play 90% of the time solo and I just made level 70.  There are some things that you really need to party up with some people to do and areas where you are not going to be able to play solo and quests at the higher levels etc but you can do fine solo for the most part.

Of course your character choice makes a big difference.   It would probably be pretty hard to solo a buffer/healer character much after level 30 but what would be the point anyway.

I think your questions have been answered, so I will just comment on your final paragraph.

If you think the world looks "dang beautiful" from the shots you really should try the game out firsthand; screenshots dont really do it justice.

I no longer play L2. After 20 months my Dark Elf finally sheathed her dagger for good, but as far as gaming experiences go they were probably the best 20 months Im ever likely to enjoy. I will try not to take that sort of expectation to my next MMO (probably Vanguard) as Im sure, like you and your first MMO-Love EQ, its unlikely to be repeated.

For $10 (or pounds or euro's) you really havent got a thing to lose by trying L2 for a month.

    Enjoy

    I am going to say....PLAY Lineage 2

I myself just haven't had time to play, and haven't activated my account in a very long time.

But the game is one of the best I have ever played.

PnC - you'll get used to using the mouse very quickly.  It actually frees up your hands to run and chat at the same time, or smoke, or write..whatever it is you want to do with your free hand.

There is soo much to do in this game....A couple of my favorites - just plain running around and enjoying the environment.  Chatting with so many different people.  And I greatly enjoyed going to the noob territory and beating down those PKer's.

But that was a long time ago, when being lvl 40 was something to brag about.

Anyway...I hope to some day return to L2 as well.  Just that life hasn't opened up much free time.

Reports are that lvling to lvl 40 is 5 times easier than it was when retail first arrived.   They've added quite a bit of content to make this so much easier.  When you log in for the first time, you'll probably think the place is deserted.   Literally you will be at the newby villages for a day, or two at the most.  You'll quickly move to Gludio area, then to Dion.  Dion is your first town that has a huge population of shops.. from that point on, places can get pretty crowded.   Money has always been an issue, as if you are an honest player, it can be hard to make.  If you have friends already playing.. and they are willing to give you anything they can afford, that really helps out a lot.   I mean 100k, to 500k goes along way, at least to lvl 20+.  Now top S-grade weapons are known to sell for 350million adena... crazy, but some players have in the billions.   I think the key to making money is to take risks..

Anyway, great game, always fun, and ncsoft has been doing a great job on each chronicle.. keeps play fun and interesting for the most part.  I've been playing since closed beta, and haven't put the game down yet.   I suggest playing on Bartz, but only because it's the server I play on... and it is the original server.  enjoy..

    Hi Sov and Sean!

I cant tell you how much I miss the boards, such a shame they are tied into the game sub. Its been 4 months since my subscription ended and I deliberately dont go to the official forums as being unable to reply to posts is more torment than I could suffer

So how is C4? On paper it didnt seem to offer much for us inbetweenies...dont level up too fast Sov youre still my nearest competition despite playing a different server...so I thought Id take a break for at least 2 Chronicles. Has it added anything to the game and, at the risk of hijacking the thread, how is C5 looking?

Well, think of it as a testament to the L2 community. A huge part of L2 are the people you meet, both in game and on the boards.

I have to say that has a great community. Because of that community, in my respects, it can be easier for some players to get into the game. Though you do have to be patient and lvl up to at least 20 before you can go to a town that has a decent amount of people (Dion).

I'll send you a note Kari

C4's good, the new area's are nice but the AI is completly insane. Some of the area's up there i will never go back to, just because i was getting 2-4 shotted at lvl 66 lol. Alot of the new stuff is geared to the higher end players, but, it gives you something to look forward too.

  • mmaaxxxmmaaxxx Member Posts: 21

some new areas are here since c4, yes...
but the game is easier to level from 1-20 since C3.
    - you get free buffs, soulshots and you can upgrade your weapon in shops.(but none of these changes were implemented in c4.)
the bad thing is nobody plays at level 1-20.....

    ---------------------

    -
new in C4 is : you have to level your character once again  from level
40-75 to get more teleport options (!!), and then you could participate
in a fight to be a "hero", but this fighting system is broken.
    or/and
you are allowed leveling again from 75-78 and learn some new skills, but some skills arent working, this is also broken.

if was paranoid i'd say this guy works for ncsofts competition...

c4 has new lands, new pets, s grade armor, easier exp...my silver ranger is only 68 but i haven't heard anyone complaining about their new skills too much

he is right that very few play in the starter towns...but with the free soulshots and buffs you shouldnt be there for more than a week anyway...also people are always rerolling and if you see people with fancy robes buffing people...tell them you're a noob and most people will hook you up

if you on Bartz pm my characters and i'll give you advice if you need it

I've got just one question. One of you has mentioned level "walls" on every 5th level after lv 40.
Is there a wall on the highest level (78 now afair)?

Looks like no one has updated it.

    here it is though

    And the original link

    http://boards.lineage2.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=399290&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#399290

    As Oringally posted and rediscovered...

    Level walls!

    46 to 47 = 2.7M XP
    47 to 48 = 2.9M XP.
    48 to 49 = 3.1M XP.
    49 to 50 = 3.3M XP.
There is no wall there, see the pattern? Very steady increases, but nothing dramatic.

But, from 50 to 51 is 5.4M XP.

The pattern resumes until the next wall:
    51 to 52 = 5.7M XP
    52 to 53 = 6.1M XP
    53 to 54 = 6.5M XP
    54 to 55 = 6.9M XP

    Then, another wall.
    55 to 56 = 9.8M XP

    56 to 57 = 10.5M XP
    57 to 58 = 11.1M XP
    58 to 59 = 11.8M XP
    59 to 60 = 12.5M XP

    Here it comes:
    60 to 61 = 19.8M XP

    61 to 62 = 20.9M XP
    62 to 63 = 22.1M XP
    63 to 64 = 23.4M XP
    64 to 65 = 24.6M XP

    Incoming!
    65 to 66 = 34.6M XP

    66 to 67 = 36.5M XP
    67 to 68 = 38.4M XP
    68 to 69 = 40.4M XP
    69 to 70 = 42.4M XP
    70 to 71 = 44.6M XP

Is there no wall at 70?!

    71 to 72 = 58.5M XP

    Oh =/ Here comes another

    72 to 73 = 73.6M XP

    .. and another..

    73 to 74 = 90.0M XP

    and the last one:

    74 to 75 = 100.8M XP

    EDIT...

    More fun info

    Want to be even sadder?

If you sum up the xp needed for each level (i.e. the total exp of the char), you will notice that for one character of lvl 75, you could ALSO have levelled:

    - two characters to level 68
    - three characters to level 64 and a half
    - four characters to level 62
    or
    - 46 characters to lvl 40

The last lvl (74 to 75) alone takes as much experience points as levelling a character from 1 to 57, and for 73->74 you could level a character from 1 to 56.

    Quite amazing.

thank you for giving me advices, i doubt i need them after playing so long.
there are no new skills for most classes level 75 and under in Chronicle4. i talked about level 75 and higher .

If  I may give you a good advice, change your ranger class
    My Nuker-mage is a "Necromancer level 77" (best class in Lineage2) ,
got the "Dark Vortex" skill and I can one-shot you.

  • KeiichanKeiichan Member Posts: 7
Lol. I totally misunderstood the meaning of "level wall". I thought it's a border, from which you can't Level Down (by getting killed and losing xp).
So is there anything like that? Or is it like even if you get to max level and die many times, you lose a level?
