If you're on a PC get a gamepad

reavoreavo Member Posts: 2,173

I played this game about a year ago and while I loved the game, playing it on a keyboard just got too hard to handle. So I quit.

This time I'm playing it with a USB gamepad (like you use for a PS2) attached to my computer. It is soooooooooo much better. Now I love this game.

If anyone is trying to play this with their keyboard on their computer, please go get you a gamepad. Mine was only $30.00 and it was worth every penny of it. The only complaint I have about it is that there is no heal button. I still have to hit ALT-H to sit. But that's okay.

Just thought I'd help everyone out with a hint. Hope it helps!!!! ::::20::

Ive played on both the Ps2 and the Pc
Stoped playing on the Ps2 when my harddrive broke image

But i never really had a problem with either of the controlls
i did think that the Ps2 Controlls were much easyer but it just took a little getting used to when i made the switch to Pc

    That's cool.

I could never get used to it though. I had to untie the knots my fingers were in a few times. hehe. Plus having to use the number pad to move my character made me have to scoot my keyboard over to the left to get comfortable. Unfortunately my roommate plays on my other computer which is setup right beside this one, so I was pushing his keyboard on the floor. lol.

Oh, btw. I found a way to put heal on the gamepad. The front buttons on the gamepad open up the two rows of macro buttons. Then I just created a macro for heal on one and I'm set. Yipee!!!

Do whatever works :) .  I persionalyl find the PC controls very very easy, I can do mostly everything I need right off the number pad, everything else just uses, CTRL+1-0 ALT+1-0 or Tab.  Not saying it's easy for everyone, Im just use to it because it was my 3rd big mmo I got into, So I went from UO-click and walk, to Anarchy Online, WSAD to FFXI number pad, all rather extreme changes. I started with FFXI back in 2002 on the JP version so I've had some practice :D

    It's a Logitech RumblePad 2.

Funny thing was that there is a sticker on the box that says "get Final Fantasy XI Online for free, details inside". ::::01::

Uh, yes there is a heal button. L3 (pressing down on the left analog joystick) locks you into you current target, or if you're not targetting anything...

    ...you heal.

No, with the PC game pad. In fact, I use the Rumble Pad 2, same as you. If you've asked for the default setup in the FFXI config utility, pressing down the left analog joystick will put you into heal (if you're not targetting anybody). I just double-checked to make sure I wasn't hallucinating or something.

    Same.

The first few hours of FF XI I used simplified keyboard. It's just easier for me... but I got myself a gamepad like PS2 controller, set it up like PS2, and play it like PS2.

It's much smoother :) FF XI is one of the very few games where using gamepad is more enjoyable than keyboard & mouse.

So I recommend others who have yet to try it to go ahead... since you are going to spend a lot of time in that game, might as well make those time well spent ;)

C.M is right about this, pressing down the left analog stick makes you heal (or locks target if you got something targeted). I got a ps2 to pc usb-converter so I play wth a Logitech ps2 controller, works like a charm.

Thanks.  I figured it out already though.  I found out in a strange way.  I dropped the controller on the floor on accident, then when I looked up at the screen I was in heal position.  Sooo, I started pressing everything trying to figure it out.  I had forgotten about being able to press in the joysticks.  lol.

looks like someone doesnt know how to change the keyboard settings from full sized to compact i used teh compact setting and controls work perfectly
  • AelrazAelraz Member UncommonPosts: 168

I dunno...I always played on the compact setting but I didnt really like it. Sure, it was fine for moving around etc, but all the macros were killing my fingers, especially the alt+X ones. imo, gampad is much more comfortable. But I guess its all a matter or preference, whatever floats your boat etc.

The only dowside with using a gamepad is that you gotta put it aside every time you want to type something.
