ok if you want a straight answer to that question, i think runescape is a very dumb, very boring game. but when you think that its just some lame game out of a website, i suppose its good remebering that. but as a game, i tried to play it and once i started baking cakes and mining rocks it kinda lost all of its appeal.
For sure if your not a member on runescape you cannot enjoy it !! It also takes alot of time to get rich and have some great skills.... but in general i think its a very good game ( my opinion )
I think its the worst game i have ever played, and the graphics are horrible (yes, i understand that its played from a web browser, but i'm looking at it strictly from a gamer viewpoint, which is what he wants)
It has a really major flaw that I think anyone can recognize. The other things are basically relative.
The graphics aren't good but I don't really care. Depends on your taste. If you want good graphics out of your games, stay the heck away.
The skill system makes more sense than other game's in a lot of ways. You don't kill monsters to get better at metal working, you make things out of metal. The downside is that its about as deep as a bath tub. If you want to be good at mining, you just mine a lot. There are no base abilities that would give you trickle down. In short, no skill tree at all. Its more like a lawn. Mining doesn't increase your strength or stamina. It just raises mining. Also, the grind is insanely long and any one skill has nothing worth reaching at the top of the ladder anyway. To top it off, what ever system they use it so heavily influenced by the dice rolls gaining, say, 1/3rd of the level cap probably won't make you go noticeable faster and now you can mine different things.
Everything is static. Some people ought to adore this based on what they've said. Personally, I think that instancing has its place.
What it, insanely in my opinion, lacks is any sort of support for grouping up in any way. The only social activities are based around who happens to be there doing it at the same time. There are really strong monsters that can or need to be teamed but there is no loot management. Whoever happened to get the highest rolls in the fight gets the loot. All chat is by private message or in the vicinity. There are no channels. There is no shared experience, or really any benefit whatever for cooperating (except to gank/anti-gank in the PVP zone).
Because of how the skills work, anyone can raise everything and experience points actually have a (large!) opprotunity cost. Basically, XP gained by processing natural resources is seen as so valuable the finished products are usually worth much less than the raw material needed to produce them. And, because you don't have to focus on being really good in a form of combat or a tradeskill, you end up with a situation where cooperation is actually less productive than real life. For example an expert miner teaming up with an expert smith so that they could make high quality products quickly. In RuneScape, the miner and the smith may split what they make from their joint-product equally, but both are sacrifing the opprotunity of gaining experience points in the other's field. Which is probably going to be worth more than anything the smith cooks up.
Finally, the click interface? The good lord gave us mortals the keyboard for a reason. The whole frigging world can be easily crossed in 20 minutes or so (without using the numerous teleportation spells, short cuts, hang gliders, death and respawn, etc) but people still complain about getting around. Because clicking is really just annoying.
I don't see why so many people are saying runescape sucks. Yes the graphics aren't the best and yes it may get a little repetative but it's still got a lot more to do then most other games i've heard of and played. So im saying it's not the best but definetly worth playing for a while.
The community on Runescape is probably the worst you'll ever see. Maybe. Every 5-10 minutes I'd expect to hear someone cursing (or being filtered) over an iron rock being taken by the advanced runite (best free-material- ie. fastest at mining) pick people,or a high-level calling someone a 'noob'. There are some nice people, but it's a real quest finding them.
The main problem is yes, grouping is tough. Even making friends can be tough on occasion. Scamming is also a problem but it has a safeguard trade system somewhat. You have to visually double confirm any trade, which is a BIG PLUS. Other games take note.
Free quests so far are ok,I liked the 'Ernest the Chicken' one; reminded me of some Resident Evil puzzle. Lag is an occasional problem, but it's not too bad considering it runs off a Java client.
Membership is 5 quid per month, and can even be done via mobile phone. ANOTHER BIG PLUS for Runescape.
Overall though,Runescape is either the RPG you play if you don't have long to play on the bigger MMORPG's as it's very casual-oriented,or the one you are introduced to in the MMORPG ladder.
To ignore the graphics, just play from a top-down view like I do. Great view.
I'd recommend giving Runescape a try,and even keeping it if you aren't immersed straight away. You'll be pleased to know you can come back and not feel out-classed or anything.

Good game for people just going into MMORPG, if you scratch the community.
Other than that, horrible game. All you really do is try to bring your skills up for no reason at all.
But.... isn't that what all MMORPGS are like?
