how to play ffxI with antialiasing!

terrifiedterrified Member Posts: 143

Manually edit the registry:

?Open Regedit

?Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPlayOnlineUSSquareEnixFinalFantasyXI

?Change values 0003 and 0004 to some value between 1280 and 2048 (your
pref based on performance vs. appearance). Make sure these values are
the same. and make sure that the values you set are in decimal not hexadecimal

?Manually set your video card ansitropic filtering to at least 4x.

doing this makes this game run ALMOST perfectly antialiased for me

you will probably be needing a high end graphcis card to be able to do this without lag probably but its working  great with my amd64 3000+ with 2 gig coursair pc3200 ddr ram and my Nvidia Geforce 7800 GT OC from BFG tech  and my asus a8n-e nforce4 motherboard  :)

How'd you learn how to do that?  And do you know of any other tweaks to make it look better?

I noticed that the characters in game don't look the same as they do on the character creation screen.  Can you make them look like that?

nope a freind showed me this site that had it i cant remember the websites url but you had to register to get access to forums to see the thread it was one of the issues that kepted me from getting into this game figured other people with high end computers might want to try this :)

i would like to note that you should do this after you have set everything using the final fantasy xi config application as it will overwrite the registry hack if you change certain settings.

It's pretty much for making the game look a lot smoother by changing resolution and stuff...

This kinda stuff is too complicated for me, and the game doesn't look TOO bad as it is... So I think i'll just leave it alone.

It might seem tricky, but is rather easy when you read it with thought. I did it for kicks and I have to say it really does wonders to the background quality, even if it's not bad as it is.

Really? Hm... I suppose I should go try my hand at it.

Anti-aliasing is a post-process (at least in 3D graphics, since it's done after everything else has been drawn to the screen) that traces the hard "staircase" edges you normally see in 3D graphics, especially where two contrasting colors are right next to each other, and then "smooths' them out by using "in-between" colors to blend one color into another.

I know that might make no sense.. so I'll give an example.

Let's say you have a red square right next to a white square. It's going to be pretty obvious where one ends and the other begins right? What anti aliasing does is adds a couple rows of different shades of pink, blending the red more into the white, so instead of a sudden change in color, there's a more gradual change.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti_aliasing - if you look at the diamond example on this page, you'll see the effect, only using black and white. See how the diamond on the left has hard, harsh lines and you can see that staircase effect.. but the one on the right doesn't? That's because they use shades of grey to blend the black into the white, making it a more smooth transition.

Now.. where FFXI is concerned, changing the resolution isn't automatically adding anti-aliasing; it doesn't have that programmed in, which is why the OP recommends setting the AA on your video card.

and the cash shop selling asphalt..."
